How was the fluid so bad if it had a new box a few years ago?

Ultimately i can only trust what the seller said - maybe the box was fitted earlier in its life....

Having said that the AW55 is notoriously hard on the fluid. Ive been out and about today and its really driving a different car.

Cleaned the old beasty today, just clocked over 3500 miles with it.

Im loving the improved gearbox and another bonus is that Ive found it to have the updated ETM module (yellow sticker on the outer-casing, rather than the original Volvo white), that should (hopefully) be one less thing to worry about.... smile

Ive discovered its got a very occasional knock on the front suspension somewhere - its been up on the ramps at my local garage and everything was found to be spot on - we had ordered a set of ARB droplinks, thinking they would be the culprit but no! I think its probably the spring rotating on the turret - a known problem on the V70 and one for which Volvo released a TSB many moons ago - far from desperate to get it sorted though.

In the end I got a 50% refund from the seller on the lamps - we were going in circles trying to get the buggers picked up by DHL and were even quoted 200 at one point for a van to come to my house and take them away :S So we both cut our losses. It looks like I may have sourced another set of cheap lamps via the Volvo forums anyway smile

Ive also added the obligatory PH stickers. Subtle ones in the rear screens and a rather less subtle one on the front to 'cover' the pre-existing damage..... not sure if ill leave it on or not.

Still looks like a lot more than 1Ks worth IMO smile

Those V70s are amazing value, miles cheaper than a 5er or E class of the same age and spec. I wanted an XC70 as my winter hack but couldn't find one and ended up with a CRV instead.

It looks like you got a great car for 1k, I'd happily drive that every day.

And, she is sold!

Yip, im a bit gutted to be honest as I really liked this old bus. However....

Im pretty sure the engine was on the brink of stting itself in a major way. It had the onset of a PCV problem and it was beginning to blow oil out the dipstick and rear main seal. I think I could also detect a bit of rod knock or lifter noise in there too.

The above, coupled with the fact I really, really need a diesel = time to get rid whilst I still can. It went this morning for €1500 - bought for €1150ish, had €400 of new tyres and a €250 gearbox refresh. So for 5 months and 6k miles motoring thats not too bad, not my best effort, but not bad hehe

A diesel managing 40mpg combined is going to cut my monthly fuel bill from about €800 to €300 smile

Hi Mustard, indeed I noted that one thanks - however word from the beardists suggests a 530D isnt capable of much over 30mpg combined, and I really like to see 40-45.

Its still 3 weeks til I am back in the UK for the next shed anyway - commuting in the Spider until then!

I'd say near 40 than 30 myself.

Sounds like you need a v70 D5 strikes me as the best power / economy compromise
