In most cases I'd say remove the rear lights too, but I'm sticking with these.. When they are on they look far far better and illuminate with a red doughnut, much like a single lamp on a skyline. I guess I need to do a photo to illustrate the point!
I had the same lights on my 1st 5 know exactly what you mean. Although mine was BRG so they did suit it better with lights off aswell.Lovely 5 though that engine bay could be a framed picture!
OP.... just WOW!!!
i had a lovely mk1 1.8is and it was quite simply my biggest regret ever selling that car!!! i love your car, its a REALy beauty, can you please post some more pics, engine bay detail shots, well eveything you have really..... i fking LOVE it!!
Anybody that calls this a hairdressers car simply hasnt driven one.... the rifle bolt feel to the change, the lovely revvy motors, the sublime handling...... the mk1 mx5 is everything a petrolhead needs!!!!

hi there,
i've got the FMII kit on one of my 5s, i was driving it last night actually, great fun in the cold...
I'm curious about the power output, with the engine built as it is you would be safe going quite a bit higher than you have, is this down to personal choice or the limitations of the standard GT28 turbo?
Either way, great car

Money really - speed is a question of money afterall. I agree though, I could get more power from the car, but do wonder if I 'need' it tbh. Drive the car on the road and I'm never left thinking it could do with a bit more.. Even on track I've never felt the need..I'm curious about the power output, with the engine built as it is you would be safe going quite a bit higher than you have, is this down to personal choice or the limitations of the standard GT28 turbo?
However, for bragging rights, thats a different story

Hi from Earlsheaton. I can't believe I haven't seen this out and about before.
Thats not far at all Do you go to the local meetings? I'm gonna try and get to plenty more of them this year..Its a meet thats been going on a while. Its something to do on a Sunday and some nice metal turns up sometimes!

That happened on Sunday. Accroding to the police my parked diesel repmobile was being anti-social and I've been awarded a section 59 for my loutish behavour. If I get another one, my car will be confiscated.
Edit: As you can see, I'm not the least bitter about this

I haven't tried that specificaly tbh. It is rather short geared like any MX5 but I'm not into sitting at jail bait speeds on the roads tbh. However, it does get up to speed rather well Though I've never actually timed that either so I cant give you any figures
As to putting the power down, well, that can be a hoot! In the winter months you do have to be careful with it, but I like that. Its not tricked up with driver aids, in fact it doesn't have any at all, and in my mind that does nothing but ADD to the driving experience
In the dry with the Federal RSR tyres on its really very good, I love those tyres!
Thanks for the photography compliments too Thats another hobby of mine I've been getting into over the last couple of years. And yes I have put pictures up in the Photography section for a while now
2nd gear should see around 60MPH in the 5 speed box. Top speed in 5th would be around 120-130MPH depending on which diff you have fitted as there are a number that were available across the years in the MX5 and they are all interchangable. I never timed my MK1 turbo or the race car but 0-60MPH must around the 5sec mark if you get it off the line properly. Not really the point of a turbo MX5 though, properly set up you get the huge grip and balance of an MX5 but with the power to seriously build speed in a corner. Mid range punch is huge.

With the mods your engine has you could go north of 300BHP at the wheels. For regular circuit use with hard gear changing or timed competition whith hard starts your driveline will st itself long before the engine will. You will strip the crownwheel in the diff or 3rd gear will take a dump. However, for bragging rights, thats a different story
The 6 speed box is supposedly slightly stronger but there are plenty of stories of those being destroyed. The factory turbo box is strong enough but I know of some full race turbo MX5's that have destroyed these and ended up going to the considerable effort of using a Skyline or RX7 gearbox.
Your mileage may vary on all this though, all my MX5's have been hard driven on track but I am also gentle on cars and keep things highly maintained and didnt have any issues.
Personally I would leave the power levels where you have them, enough to be properly fun but just on the right side of not costing you a fortune in brakes and tyres.
What do you rev it to? Those internals should be good for 8000RPM but I would go for a high volume oil pump before trying it.
Thanks for that deviant, it made for an interesting read
I have seen the back of one gearbox already so clearly its quite close to the line. We replaced that with other 5 speed tbh but if I had the same issue a few times over then I'd have to shell out somewhat for something stronger. A chap near me has a Quaife straight Cut box in his Strong yes, easy to live with on a drive, it is not!
The rev limiter is set to 7400rpm, again, we could go with more.. Its not a tune which puts everything at risk of breaking. And so far its working very well as, bar the gearbox its been faultless to date
Yes I was at the Batley Brag It was a good turnout that wasn't it. I will try to be at the next one too. I've a few photos from the day in my Flickr photostream too In fact it was through one of those photos I got to see, passenger and photoshoot my favorite Hotrod!!
