my first car, peugeot 306 1.4, not working help!!!!!!
Discussion
hi, yesterday i bought my first car, a peugeot 306 1.4
it was fine on the test drive, but as soon as we got it home, there was a knocking noise coming from the engine, and then today we find that the car is leaking oil, when my dad was driving it, the signals stopped working and the window buttons wouldnt work either, and then i was going to drop my brother off and the car started over revving randomly at idle.
5 mins later i turn the key and the car doesnt start at all.
the guy mentioned a problem with the ignition module but it was just that the key doesnt jump back after you start the car, so the starter motor keeps going, all we had to do was turn it back ourselves and it was fine.
what the hell is wrong ?
please help

Can't help you that much as I've only got a HDi 306, I had a no start issue. Turning over but not firing, was the fuel pump relay. brown multi relay next to ecu in engine bay - but i'd hazard a guess it'd be alot different on your engine.
Do the usuals though, check your earths are good, fuses etc. look at getting a Haynes manual! Pug306 forum is really good too.

I hope for you that the big ends are not shot, but it has been known for a similar knocking sound from the bottom end when the lower pulley comes loose on cold starts.
I had a similar noise on my old 1999 306 1.4 and peugeot had diganosed worn big ends, so a mate of my fathers dropped the sump to find no such thing. it ended up being the lower pulley, once it warmed up and the metal expanded it was ok.
It would need tighting up about once a year, I did another 50,000 miles in that car and its still going strong to this day on the original engine, and it never used a drop of water or oil.
Also French electrics are well known to be crap, when I bought mine the temp gauge went through the roof, Only to discover a bad earth.
I just hope for you that you have not been sold a clapped out banger as otherwise it may be cheaper to scrap the car, as 306's are as cheap as chips, my brother also had an old 1.4 which only cost him £350 with 56,000 on the clock and that was 5 years ago, he didn't spend one penny on his and the the cambelt tensioner went on his last year and he got £150 back in scrap value.
