Got it back in 2004, from a car sales place across the road from the flat I was living in at the time

Next to my brothers Matt's mk1

Needed some work for MOT ... fair bit of rot between the inner & outer rear arch .. & around the seat belt mount .. so put Matt to work (he does paint & bodywork for a living)

Then onto lower front panel & wings

Rear arch repairs & tidy up on the lower rear panel

Full re-spray on the outside

It's first day back on the road .. I can't remember how long it took to be honest

Finished ... "ish"

Had it on some 14 inch MSW wheels for a while ... not low enough to make aftermarket wheels "work"

Managed to get hold of the correct steel wheels ... 5.5x13 & et38 (same as early GTI wheels)

Had no record of a head gasket change in the history folder, so sorted that, cleaned the bay up a bit & got our Matt to paint some parts for me

Took it out to a VW show in the snow the other year redface

Today ... been off the road for the past 3 years, due to track days 1st year, Sapphire Cosworth the 2nd & skint last year

Needs the carb looking at because it does not want to idle & brakes looking at ... should not be too bad to get the MOT sorted as it's been stored in a dry garage

..

Other job's to do this year are re-trim on the drivers seat (worn bolster) & pull the engine out to paint the block etc.

Wow the engine bay looks great. Look even better with the block painted. Great transformation. smile

Can ask how many horsepowers does the 1.3 give? I assume the car is very light also?

Looks in great condition, and it's very refreshing to see an older VW not scrapping the ground on stretched tyres thumbup

Still a cohesive design that looks pretty even now compared to the bloated small hatches of today.

Jealous of this thread. My dad has a 'Y' plate Golf driver in the shed which needs body work, all the panels there just needs doing. Was nearly my first car. Seeing this just wants me to get it sorted now.

Just ordered a carburettor rebuild kit from Gower & Lee ... I'll rebuild the carb sometime this week & see if that sorts out the idle problem

Found that the tip of the CO adjustment screw in the carb is bent frown

Rang Gower & Lee ... he's getting me one from Germany

Then ....

Remembered I have a spare carb in the garage

Took the screw out of that & it looks fine to use

I could be better ... it doesn't have anti-roll bars, so rolls a bit

I've been meaning to get some standard GTI anti-roll bars ever since I got the car (8 years ago)

Beautiful. I think red is the best colour for a Mk1 Golf
