Ok, So I've decided to get a Series 2 RS Turbo as a long term project car and something fun for those lovely summer days.

I'm sure i've come to the right place for all the inside information and things to look out for when i start viewing these great cars.

Could you be so kind as to give me your knowledge on common faults, rust spots and general signs that i need to look out for.

I know that the boot floor, and battery shelf are prone to rust, so these are on my list. General wear and tear to the supports on the seats looks very common too, but you'd expect this for a 20 year old car.

I'm focusing on trying to get a G or H reg, 90 Spec model. Ideally in Mercury Grey.

My main want is for the car to be nearly totally standard. The more standard the better for me, as this gives me more peace of mind that it hasn't had as hard a life as a tuned / modified example.

Plus, i'm thinking longer term that this will be more sought after should / when i come to sell her on.

Does anyone know of any that are for sale, or being considered for sale that aren't currently on Pistonheads / ebay. I've looked at them all and a couple have stood out.

I'm planning on starting to view next month, so anyone with one thaty're looking to sell, please contact me.

I look forward to hearing from all on your advice / knowledge!

Thanks in advance

Ross

Make sure it has a working LSD- jack the front up, both wheels should spin in the same direction.

Wiring under the steering column will be brittle and cause problems.

I haven't owned a S2 but owned a S1 back in the 90's, loved it. Rust is the big issue on these cars;
Inner wings
Fuse box
Battery tray
Bulk head
Chassis arms
Floor inside car
Spare wheel well
Chassis
Floor pan
Boot floor and wheel well
Fuel tank
Sunroof opening
Also you want to have a good look around the bodykit areas as you can't really see whats going on underneath.

Not saying all these cars are rusty but have a very close look over you potential purchase.

Watch for any smoking, blue, black or white.

Good luck in your search...

I went to look at one a while back with my nephew (it was for him).

The car had supposedly had a full rebuild and a bare metal respray.
It was quite frankly a shocker, the paint on it was nice but it had been done purely to mask how much the car was a dog, rust was everywhere, oil was everywhere and to top it off there was a nice run of weld exactly where the chassis number should have been, i pity whoever did buy it.

They rust, a lot so really get your hands dirty when looking at them and dont be afraid to prod areas.

The mechanicals, well, just treat it like looking at any other car, look at everything with a fine toothcomb, start it from completely cold, not like the nice man did for me and warmed it up first, thanks!

Decent advice is don't do it!

Very hard to find a good one and expect to pay a high price if you do find a good one (£4k+).

They rust like you wouldn't believe and they are now over 20 yrs old most have been ruined by botched mods/ repairs and rot.

The last one I had was 2 yrs ago and was a complete nail to drive even though it had lots of money spent on it.

They don't drive very well compared to eg a golf gti Mk2 or 205 but even worse is they have not held together well so expect lots of problems.

As said already, Passionford.com although this site is used mainly by Cossie owners. Not sure where the best ERST place is - still probably PF.

Get a good one in the first place, it will cost you but probably cost less in the long run.

If i was looking for one i'd be making my way to see the owner of this. It's been for sale for a while though, maybe a bit too pricey but probably one of the cleanest for sale just now.

You may want to go onto the RSOC forum for a look too if you're looking for some real anal info about them.

Have a look at www.rsturbomania.co.uk and not forgetting www.rsownersclub.co.uk.
Have a look at this one http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C289144, not grey but looks like a good honest standard car

Bought one yesterday!!! Got an absolutely great example from a guy on Passionford.

Red, H Reg, full underside had been re-done and most of the car re-sprayed.

Great car, but it had been lowered and had a 4" exhaust put on it. SIts and sounds great, but too many speed bumps around where I live, so I now need peoples help!! I need to get some new springs. Its been lowered 40mm. ANd has Gmax shocks on. I have the original shocks from the sell, but need springs. Ideally i'd like to lift it back to its true height, Its such a clean example, i'd like to have everything standard.

Any suggestions on springs, and where i could possible get originals?

The exhause is also a little too big for my taste and too loud. Anyone have any ideas where I can get an original Ford Exhaust? Or if not original, anyone know of companies offering near exact replicas?

I look forward to your help and advice.

Thanks a lot!

Good stuff.

Is it the red one?

Sounds like you just need a new exhaust tip or backbox and some factory or near standard springs.

A friend had one a while back with Koni shocks and Koni supplied springs, sat like this..

Such a cool looking car - A little chavvy maybe in some peoples eyes, but probably no worse than Renault 5 GT Turbo's (of which I have had a few!)

Look forward to pics smile
