Well done mate!!I was hoping to take a drive down to see the action but couldn't get all the chores done in time.

Was equally frustrating as I could here the cars from my back garden (I'm in Church Crookham) Hoping to rejoin the FDMC again for next year. What licence do you need for the Royale/Sprinting, I can't remember..

Cars looking good too. I'll keep an eye out for you when I am out and about (either Mercedes A Class or Caterham Superlight).

Cheers

Shame you couldn't make it as the weather was perfect for spectating.

National B (Non Race) for Sprinting which is just a form filling exercise and sending off a photo. You also need an FIA approved Race Suit, Gloves and Helmet and in some classes from 2016 a HANs device.

Well done! smile

Some good driving there bud. How far were you off the leader? What mods do you think you need to do to improve the car?

Sorry if you've mentioned this. Have you swapped out your yellow injectors?
Also, what's the weight of the flywheel you put in, ~4kg?
Cheers

0.73 seconds. Best improvement will be seat time but, you know, more power can never harm your chances right? ha ha. I think for next year some proper sprint spec tyres in a super soft compound will be purchased. Power wise there's not really any quick wins there anymore, next up is vernier cam gears and removing the overlap to see if that brings any gains.

Nope, still on the RX8 yellows and got a bit of headroom left in them yet.

The flywheel is a CC Ultalight which is just under 5kgs.

Wow, you were pretty close.

Sticky tires obviously can help immensely.

How much power is the car making at the moment? And how much more would you think would be helpful before traction would become troublesome?

It's running 220-230bhp at the flywheel. Not loads but enough. It brakes traction enough plenty already but any extra power will help propel it down the straight bits fast plus with more grippy tyres I should be able to use more of the power on exits. 250 at the flywheel with some soft avon will probably be enough to keep me in with a chance of silverware in this class.

The MX5 must already be pretty fast then!

Have you ever had any tuition? I found tuition was very helpful and I became a large margin faster with it!

Keep us posted! Great car, great thread! smile

I've been doing trackways for about 10 years and had a couple of sessions with Dave De Costa at Castle Combe but no proper race tuition. I did my ARDS earlier in the year and will be competing in the Race of Remembrance at Anglesey in a few week time. For that I'll be sharing a 300bhp turbo's MK2 MX5 with aero. My first ever circuit race, 45 cars on track, some of it at night and it's being covered live on Motors TV. What could possibly go wrong? biggrin

Good luck! That sounds great! smile

Can you remind us prior to the event and some of us may tune in if we can make it!

A cracking pic from Sunday’s sprint.

Untitled by Nicholas Horne, on Flickr

Having ended the season in this car on a real high with the 2nd in class trophy it’s time to focus my attention on 2016. Winter is a time for plans, upgrades, improvements and repairs. The next 5 weeks will be consumed by the Race Of Remembrance prep and competing there in Skuzzle’s MK2 Aero Monster but after that attention will be back on this wee beasty.

For 2016 my aim is to compete in all three Farnborough and District Motor Club Sprints (Dimanche, Abingdon CAR-nival and Royale) as well as at least one competitive round at Gurston Down Hillclimb. This time I’m wanting some top step action in the class as well. With that in mind I have the following list to work through before April. It’s a tall order budget wise when factoring in I also want to run the MAX5 racer in a couple of rounds of the MAX5 championship.

• Rust repairs to the sills (Rust really isn’t lighter than carbon fibre).
• Repair/replace cracked peddle box.
• Some more sprint/hill suitable rubber with more grip from cold.
• Get the car set up and corner weighted.
• Adjustable cam pulleys for a bit more power.
• 2.5 Sport rear brakes.
• Finish plumbing the extinguisher in and battery cut off pulls (it won’t make me faster but BecauseRaceCar).
• Purchase and fit some proper 5 point 3” harnesses.
• Adjust the seat to lean back a bit more.
• Fit passenger bucket seat (lighter than standard seat and I need to run both seats in my class as per the regs).
• Steering wheel hub spacer to improve the driving position.
• Fab up and fit some door bars to the Cusco/Safet21 4 point cage for a bit more chassis rigidity.

There’s probably some more stuff to add to that list that I have forgotten.

My new wheels arrived a couple of weeks ago and I finally got around to getting the tyres swapped over and the wheels fired today.

Off with the old:

On with the new:

Exactly the same, just a different colour. The white ones will be returned to their proper home on the Max5 race car.

I've also picked up some vernier cam pulleys:

The plan with these is to get some custom ground cams from Kent and with these bolted to them see how much more power we can get out of the old girl. Currently at 190bhp-ish at the wheels and hoping to get her over 200bhp at the wheels. This will be a winter project along with a lot of other things that need doing ahead of the 2016 Sprint season.

Before all that kicks off there's the small matter of The Race of Remembrance 1000KM endurance race at Anglesey in this weapon:

Tune in to MotorsTV over the weekend of 7th and 8th of November to watch it spitting 3 foot flames live on TV. The start of the race is Saturday night 4pm - 7pm and the remainder 10am through to 4pm on the Sunday, I believe the coverage is non stop.

Extinguisher and cut-out pulls on the OS rollbar hoop? Id be interested to see how you mount them.

Build threads are great but for a while I've been wanting to do something a bit more. So with that in mind I have stared a blog.

https://teamhorneyracing.wordpress.com

Initially I'm just spamming it up with posts to document the last 4 years with the car. Once that's completed I'm hoping to do a weekly article. It could be based on an event attended, a mod completed or a thought piece on something MX5/motorsport related.

I hope it's of use/interest to some people.

Only just seeing this thread now, a great journey you have had with the car. I used to own a MK2 and loved it.

A friend of mine had a genuine mazdaspeed supercharged 5. That was one of the most fun cars I have ever driven, with the extra power of yours it must be brilliant! Keep up the good work.

Kent Cams are currently regrinding a set of camshafts for me. We've spent a lot of time trying to work out the best profiles for duration and lift as well as removing overlap. Hoping to get them in and dialled in in a few weeks time. The aim is to break the 200whp (approx 240 Flywheel HP) figure.

First Sprint in this thing is end of April so plenty of time to tickle a bit more poke out of it. I also need to fix a few things and give it a service.

It's also gone very rusty and needs some quite major sill repairs. frown
