Thanks for the positive response.

I'm still struggling for a name, the French ones are fine, but I was thinking of something with a Portuguese link. I've been googling for famous Franco/Portuguese figures, but drawing a blank so far.

A new friend has a very scruffy 2CV van, called 'Poubelle' hehe

Ferdinand Magellan and Vasco Da Gama were famous Portuguese.

What makes it a "Special"? Is it the fabric roof?

Another vote for Andre, which could pass as a French or Portuguese name, by the way.

Nothing, the Special is the povo model; plutocrats drove Clubs, snappily dressed plutocrats drove Charlestons, Roger Moore wannabes drove 007s, and presumably Dollys were driven by people comfortable with their sexuality.

We once had one of these up on 2 wheels going round a roundabout outside St Andrews.

I drew the short straw and sat in the middle of the rear seat - on top of the metal support pole (not much padding!).

Great wee beasties though, if you can master the gearshift.

Yes, I was thinking of 'Vasco', but it doesn't quite grab me.

yes

I particularly wanted a Special, I don't like the big complicated dashboards of the other models, with their full size speedos, interior light and other fripperies.

That's identical to my old 2CV! Was a great first car. Got stopped by the police in it more times than any other car I've owned though. Couple of times was for going round corners on 3 wheels hehe

Oh, and dead easy to hot wire. Remember losing the keys whilst at school once, so got in via lifting the flappy windows (which wouldn't lock) and worked out which wires were required to get it going. Felt very pleased with myself as I drove away... right until the steering lock kicked in as I went round a corner biglaugh

I have such fond memories of 2cv's...my parents drove us to spain in a blue one in the 80's...3 kids and holiday stuff! no idea how the managed it...I guess people travelled lighter in those days

After the blue one we then had a maroon and black charleston left hooker (no idea how we ended up with a left hooker)

Parents went ape when my brother ripped the roof.

Great cars and happy memories!

Love it.

I always say people should drive one of these at least once in their lives just to appreciate how much fun they are.

I could never work out the difference between dip and main beam though. They both always seemed the same.

If you have a load in the back, there is a screw adjuster under the dash to raise/lower the lights to compensate for the long suspension travel; they're mounted on a bar which pivots.

My favourite car my Dad ever owned was a Dolly. Unclip the side windows on the motorway and they flap like dogs ears. Also the rear seat comes out for a comfy sofa at picnics/events.
