I'm curious to know how the displayed average compares to reality. What does it work out to on a fill to fill basis?
I'm a recent convert to D5 ownership after picking up a 2002 V70 D5 with 225k miles for the bargaintastic price of £400 I've only filled up once so far, and the calculated mpg vs the OBC mpg was vastly different - actual avg was 36, OBC said 45!
The speeedo over-reads by a whopping amount also.
Fantastic car though, very impressed so far.
Make sure the cambelt and tensioner have been done, there are multiple stories of cambelt failure wrecking these engines. Also, make sure the auxiliary belt and tensioner are done too - this can fail and take the cambelt with it...

same in the T6 btw.
Yes, I recall you saying. I'm assuming mine is a bit out of the ordinary (hope I'm not sounding like a stuck record!).same in the T6 btw.
DJC, it's a manual, 163, Euro 3.
Speedo doesn't overread by too much, well under the 10% (say 74 at a real 70). Odometer seems to be there or thereabouts too. I'm happy with the 45-47 to a tank that I'm now getting, I think that's more than acceptable for the size, weight and comfort of the car. My working days are long enough as it is without trying economy runs at 56 mph, but I'm happy enough doing an indicated 70 and being a little slower than the middle laners (so they don't annoy me too much).

My Euro 3 manual D5 over reads by a lot on the OBC - currently reading 49.5mpg (never reset) while according to the mpg ap I have on my phone I've averaged 42.8 in the 8,000 miles I've owned it. Have to say I'm a little disappointed by that figure considering my commute consists of sitting on the motorway at 70mph for 20 miles in each direction, and I rarely accelerate hard in it. I was expecting 45-50mpg with that king of driving. DJC, it's a manual, 163, Euro 3.

Best I ever had was a real 48.5mpg on a 400 mile motorway trip cruising at 75mph on cruise - again I was expecting 50mpg+ for that kind of journey.
Does anyone know if there is any common fault that may cause sub-par mpg (apart from my driving )?

perhaps yours is a "Friday afternoon" car!
Joking aside your inter-cooler isn't split is it?

That doesn't seem to bad really. Mine wouldn't achieve 48.5 at 75 mph, but it'll get close at 70, depending on how often I accelerate to match traffic speeds in lane 2 or 3. I'm currently using as little acceleration as possible when changing lanes on the motorway at the moment, but obviously not if I'm likely to hold up other traffic.Best I ever had was a real 48.5mpg on a 400 mile motorway trip cruising at 75mph on cruise - again I was expecting 50mpg+ for that kind of journey.

The ferry has wi-fi, great success!
Right, the car:
Ive only done 150 miles in it, so initial impressions only.
The Good:
-as best as I can tell the intercooler is OK. No bulging, no signs of oil or water on the undertray.
-no problems i can spot with the injectors
-its got 4x matching decent tyres on it with plenty of life
-electric memory chairs and mirrors
-HU850 Dolby II surround system.
-economy seems spot on, indicating a happy enough engine. Started from cold with no issues.
-gearbox, suspension, brakes all seem good.
-nice wheels
The bad:
-more blemishes on the body than mentioned, i think a lot will clay/polish out.
-slight pulse through the steering..... Will try a fluid flush first, worst case eventually its a new rack. Something my previous V70 had and was about 300quid to sort. The internet suggests you can drive years with the problem with no real malaise.
The ugly:
-the interior is RANK and PONGS!
God knows what theyve been doing with it. A bloody good clean and sanitisation will have it 1000x better. But boy its bloody horrible!
Overall chuffed, i am seriously impressed with the D5 engine.
Should be home by midnight, long day!
good stuff...the D5 is a peach of an engine.Right, the car:
