Ha ha, I should have done: might have topped 100mpg.

That was mostly 50-60mph cruising (without the cruise control on) up and down the M1.

The car had just been remapped by RICA on their Sport Hybrid 204bhp remap too - although using the increased power/torque didn't go hand in hand with that fuel consumption sadly!
I'm curious to know how the displayed average compares to reality. What does it work out to on a fill to fill basis?

My classy taxi:

My T5's OBC was always within +/- 5% accurate.

I no longer have the car, but I can give you my experience of about 25k miles over 3 years.

My day-to-day driving, which included town/dual carraigeway/country B/C road commuting with most journeys <10 miles resulted in an average of anything between 42 and 46mpg (calculated, often 1-3mpg lower than the OBC)

Sat at 80mph on the French autoroute for miles and miles on end, it'd do about 55mpg. At 70, 60+mpg was possible. Driving very carefully, it'd do 70-75mpg but that was really concentrating and keeping the speeds to 56-60mpg.

The fuel consumption improved (~5%) once I had the RICA Sport 'hybrid' remap carried out in 2006.

It was probably the best all round car I owned.

That is incredible. Mine's old (180k on the clock), and seemingly has not been looked after particularly well, which I think shows. 70 mph for me will get an average of about 47-48 max. OBC overreads by a good 14 mpg, as I keep banging on about on other threads, my long term average (over 34k and 18 months) is getting close to 42 mpg, but recently I've been taking it easy and getting 46-47 from a tank, so the average will come up over time I think.
Bloody good car though. It's going to be difficult to replace when the time comes.

My OBC over-reads by 4mpg compared to "measured" mpg

same in the T6 btw.

14mpg overead? That's very strange, they're generally accepted to be +/- 5%. I always calculated at the pumps and the OBC was rarely out more than that.

I tend to get quite good MPG from most cars - must be my style of driving! The car was 70-100k in my ownership and always well maintained both prior and during my ownership.

Is yours auto/geartronic/manual? The auto and geartronic do take a chunk out of the consumption.

I'm a recent convert to D5 ownership after picking up a 2002 V70 D5 with 225k miles for the bargaintastic price of £400 biggrin

I've only filled up once so far, and the calculated mpg vs the OBC mpg was vastly different - actual avg was 36, OBC said 45!

The speeedo over-reads by a whopping amount also.

Fantastic car though, very impressed so far.

Make sure the cambelt and tensioner have been done, there are multiple stories of cambelt failure wrecking these engines. Also, make sure the auxiliary belt and tensioner are done too - this can fail and take the cambelt with it...

Yes, I recall you saying. I'm assuming mine is a bit out of the ordinary (hope I'm not sounding like a stuck record!).

DJC, it's a manual, 163, Euro 3.

Speedo doesn't overread by too much, well under the 10% (say 74 at a real 70). Odometer seems to be there or thereabouts too. I'm happy with the 45-47 to a tank that I'm now getting, I think that's more than acceptable for the size, weight and comfort of the car. My working days are long enough as it is without trying economy runs at 56 mph, but I'm happy enough doing an indicated 70 and being a little slower than the middle laners (so they don't annoy me too much).

Good luck OP.

Do you mind me asking how much BPM you have to pay when you get back to Holland? This has always put me off importing cars, but if it's viable, then I may have to think about doing the same. Also, what are costs with RDW like for importing etc?

My Euro 3 manual D5 over reads by a lot on the OBC - currently reading 49.5mpg (never reset) while according to the mpg ap I have on my phone I've averaged 42.8 in the 8,000 miles I've owned it. Have to say I'm a little disappointed by that figure considering my commute consists of sitting on the motorway at 70mph for 20 miles in each direction, and I rarely accelerate hard in it. I was expecting 45-50mpg with that king of driving.
Best I ever had was a real 48.5mpg on a 400 mile motorway trip cruising at 75mph on cruise - again I was expecting 50mpg+ for that kind of journey.

Does anyone know if there is any common fault that may cause sub-par mpg (apart from my driving wink )?

A quarter or so of your commute each way is on a cold engine. That would do it imho. (And on that note the thermostat's OK isn't it? as that's the easiest culprit)

tbh they do seem to vary quite a bit.

perhaps yours is a "Friday afternoon" car!

Joking aside your inter-cooler isn't split is it?
