TBH I'm still undecided about the engine. The 8v is much improved now I have it running a bit better, but i can't help thinking a GTI6/Mi16 conversion would make it so much more (the French got the Mi16 engine in a 309, so it'd be keeping in line with how Peugeot intended the car to be powered). Unfortunately, with an impending house move, this is probably off the cards for now, so I'm thinking a top end rebuild of the original lump might be a good project for the winter. I've also got a full Magnex exhaust sat in the garage so ideal opportunity to fit that too!
If you fettle the existing engine it would keep it original and I assume that if you did the 16V swap at the later date you may get more for an improved and shimmed 8V engine?

Tappets sound like they need re-shimming and your idle is all over the place, BTW wink

Cool car though!
I've never heard of that being a problem, more likely the resistance tracks on the AFM are worn.

His air flow meter is making his tappets noisy? confused

Sorry I mis-read. I thought you were suggesting his tappets were causing the dodgy idle.

Great thread here, spot on.

I managed to get hold of one of these and I am part way through a budget restoration as it has been standing for 5 years+ and the engine and beam are shot.

All the bits will be replaced/refurbed and I'm looking forward to getting on the road early next year and having it painted a few months after that.

Keep your thread updated with all the challenges if you can!

There are only 100 or so left from the initial 398 made too apparently.

40 on the road and 82 SORN at last count, so not exactly a common sight! Glad to hear about others are being brought back to life too. Mine's never going to be a show car, but hopefully I'll have a usable, tidy car at the end of it!

Mine will be the same, a tidy useable car that I can use without worrying about the paint getting chipped etc. That said, I have been painting under the arches and underneath is next too. I have started painting the engine and gearbox while they are out as I want it to look good.

Mine is a less desirable 5 door though. Great but boxy looking cars and rare nowadays as you mentioned.

For the second year in a row I was pleased to get the 309 out to the Wilton House Supercar event last month. Bit of a damp start, but turned out nice in the end:

However, over the last few weeks my plan for the car has changed somewhat It now looks like this:

In a moment of potential madness I've sold the Goodwood and bought a 205 instead. The 309 is now residing in France with the new owner, so unfortunately they'll be no more updates on this thread. But the new owner is a big Peugeot fan, and I'm sure will carry on with what I've already started!

Ah Miles car, a good buy I would have thought. You may have seen mine down there if you picked it up more than a week ago.

Goodwood looked ace. Prefer the 205 though, is it a gentry?

Yep, Miles' own car. Drives lovely, as you would expect. Needs a bit of tidying here and there but nothing major. I was at the workshop last Monday and picked the car up today. What was yours having done?

Yes it is, but with a few choice modifications (manual gearbox being the main one) wink

I've often thought that about Miles' work - very good mechanically (and indeed the only reason my 205 is still running!) but he's not too fussed about "tidiness" with bodywork, interiors etc.

Good, sounds like it's all together but still with a few bits to keep you busy when you have the time. Any plans for it, or are you going it keep it the same spec?

I had quite a bit done this time, full beam rebuild, rear disc conversion with bias valve, new brake lines, full steering rack rebuild with a quick rack, 1.6 GTI hubs and new bearings all round.

Spec will stay as it is for now. Would be nice to extract a bit more power eventually, but for now it'll just be a bit of tidying. First job is to replace the drivers seat as it's an odd colour. Might start another thread up at some point actually wink

Sounds like yours has been well looked after!

The new owner has joined the 309 GTI Goodwood page and posted up some pics. I didn't realise it was the car from this thread.

So there are at least 2 Goowdoods in France now.
