So after searching around for about 2 years I've finally brought my first car. I'm only 18 so insurance has played a huge part in the car I've been able to get. Started off looking at Novas when I was 16 and from then until now have been through every single possiblity for a first car, ranging from Daihatsu Charades to Ford Fiestas. I've been a named driver on my mom's Astra since I passed my test in February last year so have gained some road experience but it's just not ideal having very little access to a car. But today I finally put a deposit down biggrin

It's a 1996 1.8i UK model. It has only covered 55'000 miles and is in mint condition. I haven't got any photos yet because I don't pick the car up until tomorrow but I'll make sure I do post some over the weekend!

Doubt I'll get much sleep tonight!

Good man.

In february last year I picked up a 1996 1.8. In the dark it looked great, not so good in the daylight. Was bulletproof however.

Swapped it four mths later for a 1993 1.6 which is miles better. Subtely lowered, anthercite wheels, white paint and straight through exhaust it is great fun! Still got it today, and 5k on never missed a beat and returns 35mpg,

Another Fluffer

I just squeezed 19mpg out if my first tank of fuel hehe

Edit - make that 24mpg even now I've used a calculator

Surprised no one has asked this yet, so: how much was your insurance and who are you with?

I'm the same age and have also been looking at MX5's but insurance is a killer. Any tips on insurance would be much appreciated biggrin

Shop around.
Add a responsible adult (s) as named driver (s)
Limit milage.
Try fully comp rather than 3rd party.

Yes of course I've done all them, they're the obvious. Was more wondering who the insurance was taken out with?

There is a sweet spot as for which quoted mileage gives you the cheapest premium. Try possible mileages and see which is cheapest, as long as you'll be doing less all's good.

It's also cheaper often to say you park your car on the street rather than garage or driveway.

Thanks, I will smile
I assumed less miles the better, is that not always the case?

Meanwhile OP is busy out with his toy driving

Unless you are doing 2000 miles a year on a SD&P policy I have no idea how to get a good quote at 18.

The reason I just got an MX5 is because the insurance was finally reasonable at £600 and I spent weeks shopping around. (I'm 23 4 years NCD)

1.6 or 1.8?
Insurance companies are laughing their heads off with young drivers insurance.

Yep and the sad truth (in my experience of speaking to friends) is that most would never dream of claiming on their policies and just pay for a few thousand quid of damage themselves anyway as it will come back and bite them ever year if they claim. Money on insurance is largely money down the drain - only useful in accidents over £3000 - and what are the odds of that?

Havent been on here since yesterday! Been busy taking friends and family out in it. Not even a day since I brought it and I already love it! I'll hopefully get some good photos today and upload them this evening smile

In regards to insurance, it's expensive. Its £2600 fully comp. Opted for an admiral multicar because it was by far the cheapest and insuring 3 of our cars on it really brought it down! Im the main driver but my parents are named drivers which brought it down a lot also. Also ringing them, gets you better quotes smile
One annoying this for me regarding insurance was because my original quote was on a engine with a carbourator and the car I've brought is fuel injected, that bumped the price up by £300!!!
Also there is only £50 difference between a 1.6 and a 1.8 with carbourators smile
For me a 1.8 with carbs TPFT was £2100.

At the end of the day though I'm going to pay a lot for insurance being 18 so I'd rather pay more for something I genuinely want than save a little money and buy something I don't smile

Heard a few say Admiral multi-car was the best option, I'll have to take the time and get that looked at. Still £2600, yeah it's a lot of money but in young drivers insurance it's actually not too bad especially considering what you've got, well done biggrin

Thanks for the advice ! smile
Pics?
