I've taken the '535i' badge off for a clean up and think I much prefer without. Thoughts?

On the ducktail it has only got the 'M' badge rather than the full shebang and I think it balances out well.

(yes, I know this is a bit of a homo update but I've just had a manicure and don't want to break a nail doing real car jobs...)

I can't say why but if you leave the 535i badge off I think the M should swap to the right as we view it.

Listen to me, like Laurence LLewellyn Bloody Bowen!

Actually I do know why...the badge goes on the right not the left (as we view it). I knew there had to be a simple explanation.

I think I prefer the correct size numberplate tbh. My eye keeps getting drawn to the screw holes and gap between the rubbers. I'd keep the 535i badge too, but only because the rest of the car looks so original.

I agree on the number plate. It looks a bit chavvy and doesn't suit the car at all

I agree on the plate, just trying to decide which style to go for: pressed metal or whatever was period in '80.

If this was my car I would keep the 535i badge on the front and replace the front registration plate with a standard size one. The plate would have to use the older period correct font though. For some reason the modern style characters really irk me on older cars.

Metal plates with raised plastic letters are period I think?

I hoped that only people with a genuine interest might enquire and possibly even know a ballpark value/price? So far I've been offered 3 cars in p/x and have interest from 3 other people, who need to sell their own cars first. I'm looking to get my money back, plus what I've spent on tax, MOT and gearbox so circa £3k. It's a lovely car and has just done a run down to Bristol and back without missing a beat.

Anyway, back on topic, any progress on the suspension?

No, not yet. The rally season is just starting and I've got my work cut out getting the Porsche ready. First outing is March 15th on a one day event in the UK, then 3 weeks later off to France for the Rallye des Jonquilles. I'm putting the car in full-on gnarly EU spec (anything goes) rally trim: huge bespoke light pod, cage, sticky road rally rubber etc.

I absolutely love rallying on the continent, they really understand what a lot of competitors want: fun.

They're just superb. The way the Europeans support road based motorsport is sensational. They'll think nothing of closing roads and the gendarmes have a surprisingly relaxed attitude towards road manners when you've got numbers on the side smile

This is me and johnfm flat out down from a French ski resort on a rally in 2011, descending about 1km over 3kms with as many hairpins as you'd ever want. You'll regularly see groups of people out specifically to see the spectacle and they're all cheering you on, not waving fists like you get in the UK.

I'll need to look at upgrading my licence and getting a HANS device I think?

I've been watching some great videos.

I had a bit of a blip on Sunday and nearly sold the E12, in the end I couldn't bring myself to do it.

After a bit of thinking I decided that what I needed was to drive the fker more and tinker less. So this week I decided to use it exclusively as my daily.

Yesterday was good. The sun was out and the car responded well to being given a good thrashing through the Dales.

This morning however all was not rosy. Clutch pedal with no bite and all my other cars were snuggled up in the garage 4 miles away.

It turns out that the master cylinder is clusterfked and is pissing fluid into the drivers footwell. It had eaten about half a pint of fluid on the hoon yesterday but fortunately hadn't gone down below the top of the reservoir. After a bit of head scratching and chatting to Michael I topped up the fluid and pumped the clutch about 30 times - it worked. It gave me just enough to drive down to the garage and swap cars.

Looks like a new master and slave cylinder will be going on shortly. I'll probably just ask Michael to do it all together when the suspension gets reworked.
