Arrived back home from the road trip yesterday. Just over 3000 miles.
The car is just incredible. We'd regularly cruise at 85-90mph for full tanks of fuel. I managed quite a wide range of fuel economy - the best was a true average of 28mpg from a full tank on the autoroute, the worst was 17mpg from a full tank winding through the Dordogne. I guess overall I managed about 23 or there abouts, about what I was expecting.
The performance now it's had about 4000 miles since the engine work is just staggering. The torque from this 35 year old engine is something to behold, you just don't really need to change gears.
Some of the mountain passes and real backwater roads were superb. Another highlight was hitting around 135mph on the Mulsanne Straight just a couple of days ago - car felt very planted.
I'm really going to miss it but this week will be cleaning it all up and getting it ready for sale. Boo sadface and all that.

In all seriousness I'd take a decent facelift E39 M5 and some cash against it
Mark, Jim's 911 is a proper weapon - hilarious how differently they handle though. We were on walkie talkies chatting through the trip - some corners he'd be mid sentence and then 'Aaaaaaaaaaaaaargh bad camber / turn tightens / can't let off throttle' and I'd be fine, other corners the exact opposite!

I'll be sad to see it go too. It's been a delight to spend time getting it right. It responded brilliantly to being sorted out correctly. A complete transformation. Its satisfying for me to know that its now properly put together and it'll just do whatever you want without breaking. That engine is an absolute gem and the exhaust note is to die for. BMW's 'M' boys just got it so right with that model!
