We're organising a weekend in Wales over July 1st & 2nd if you can make it? Saturday is a few hours on track at Landow followed by a few beers and dinner somewhere I think? Sunday is about taking some of the roads around Brecon and enjoying the cars. There should be a good selection of cars and plenty of 60's, 70's & 80's BMW. Anyway, would be good to see you there. (includes any of you guys who keep a watch on this thread).

Thanks for the invite, sounds like it will be fun :-)
We'll do our best to get there, but will need to decide nearer the time, depending on business commitments.
I received the blue cord cloth from BMW today, interestingly it's 1.62m wide, so 6 linear metres should be plenty to do the interior, with cloth to spare.

Have any of you seen this car on eBay?

If I bid on it will I be bidding against any of you?

Would Olly be interested in working his magic on it if I buy it?

If you're after one just speak with Tony first. He'll save you buying something that's beyond repair and may even know of a car that's for sale.

Was it a barn with no walls or roof?

:-) Apparently it has been outside for 10 years, possibly at the bottom of a lake.

I take it that's a NO then!

Yes hello all,
Sorry for the slackness of updates. The car went to the upholsterer in October and I've still not got it back yet!
He contracted pneumonia and nearly died, I didn't have the heart to claim the car back as he was looking forward to doing it.
The good news is that the car's nearly done, in the correct blue cord and with a new carpet. I should have it back by the end of next week.
Meanwhile, I've been struggling to find a wiper mechanism for my e31 840........only £1,200 from the stealer, with about 20 new ones left in the world (LHD and RHD are different).
I've also had a bit of a nightmare with an e64 convertible which I bought for summer, but that's another story!

The car was running really rough when I first got it. It was very difficult to start (hot and cold) and scarily cut out at speed on at least 5 occasions. It was virtually impossible to start after cutting out, until it cooled down.
Given what I have and still spend at Broadoak BMW Ashford, we have a pretty good relationship. They wanted to take the car on as a project and to show the apprentices such things as a distributor, points etc.
To their huge credit, they scratched their heads for a few hours and ordered a full manual from BMW Germany (at their cost of nearly £2,000, I was told).
After a bit of mucking about with it, it turns out that someone (?????) had adjusted the valve clearances to zero (or less in some cases) on all of the valves.
Luckily the cam was undamaged, once the clearances were corrected, it ran perfectly.
The car started first time after sitting at the upholsterers for 7 months and sailed through its MOT with zero issues.

Upholstery looks great, a £1200 wiper mechanism is the stuff of nightmares!

Well got the M535i back today......after a wait of 8 months!
The interior looks amazing, in the correct blue cord, blue leather trim and a nice new carpet.
It got me the 30 miles or so back home, but started behaving badly as I got back (stuttering, even under load). I did think possibly a fuel issue.
I tried to restart it 5 minutes after I got back, it just spun with no sign of any ignition whatsoever, even after a couple of minutes of turning it over and messing about with it.
I left it for an hour, and it started and ran totally normally. Vapour lock?

Possibly, or some stale fuel seems more likely after 8 months. I'd fill with super unleaded and go for a couple of hours driving in the evening sun. That should sort it. smile

Hello all, I'm still working on the M535i and my E31 850CSI.
Someone on here mentioned that there's a PDF detailing the restoration, would whoever has it be kind enough to send me a copy.
Thanks in advance
Niko

Such an awesome thread, spent the best part of yesterday evening reading all of this!

I am going to follow this thread with close interest... i am currently looking for a E12 M535i to go alongside my E28 M535i.

Hope to find something pretty soon!

Lovely car! I used to have one many moons ago. I wonder if my old bus is still around FVK17W it was silver with Alpina interior. It was blueprinted when I bought it and I had a straight through exhaust and Schrick race cam fitted. It was quick!
Yes my current B5 Biturbo is double the power and obviously much faster but it is so sterile to drive compared to my M535i.

I also wonder what happened to my E34 M5 touring K220SUP I think it was and my Mk1 Gti Golf Campaign! I wish I still had all of them I would be minted!

I've been fortunate enough to have had a few M535i over the years and they're lovely cars. Had I not bought by 02 I planned on building a resto-mod E28 with S54 power as a kind of M5. Seeing this thread makes me wish I'd done it. smile

Love these things, a silver 'barn find' popped up on facebook the other day in Scotland. I've not wanted to enter further financial ruin as much since i bought my 2002tii laugh
