Will be watching this thread as I have an e28 520i set aside for very similar work so I can keep my 525e usable.

E28s are brilliant!

biglaugh Unfortunately I'm not in the market for an M52, I want to go down a similar route to you with an M3 engine.

Those throwing star wheels however.....

Less O/T - the M5 has the battery in the boot, cooking E28s have it right at the front of the engine bay. I had been thinking about copying the M5 setup, but it bugs me that the battery is on the same side as the driver and fuel tank. I still might move it to the boot, but go with something custom to put it on the passenger side. More pondering required, I think. The consideration is that the spare wheel well is on the passenger side, so there needs to be enough room to get that in and out.
Don't know if it is any safer, or indeed if it is possible but the battery on the E34 M5 is under the rear bench, drivers side. From memory, it's mounted as far forward and to the center of the car within that zone. There is also a load of heat synced electronic wizardry for the EDC etc. mounted around it which you won't have, so provided there is a recess under the rear bench, it could be a pissabolity?

Sadly the space under the rear seat isn't big enough for the battery. It is big enough for some speakers though.

What about an AGM battery? They're very light and compact with big power. I put one on my Alfa (in the boot!) and it was half the weight and a fraction of the size of the conventional battery it replaced. One of these:

The other benefits are they don't leak and don't go flat. Well recommended.

Reading with interest, as I'm just into the stripping phase of mine. It's quite rusty!

Anyway, out of curiosity, where have you sourced the replacement body panels from? I could do with ordering a few panels soon, once I've figured out the extent of the rot.

All the panels are from BMW. I have three front wings, the upper and lower front panels, the tail panel and a repair panel for the NSR.

Aiming to get it into the bodyshop in the next fortnight.

Ok cheers.

My front wings aren't bad, they've been replaced before I'd say.

Front valance is shot, and is being used for making patches for the inner wings.
Rear wings are a bit crusty, as is the rear valance thingy.
Battery box and front footwells are also in need of welding. Sills aren't too bad though, they just need a handful of small patches letting in.

What is slightly worrying is that the front left chassis rail has been welded (badly) before, and is rotting through again now. Might need some proper remedial work as it's right on the ARB mount. My concern centres around what it's like when I start cutting, because I daresay the car will end up as scrap if it's severe.

Negatory, Snowman. Due to a few logistical issues, it's still sat in my garage. Should be gone in the next couple of weeks though.

In the meantime other stuff is being done, but nothing major just yet.

You're absolutely right - what was I thinking!

I got some new retaining nuts for the front footwell speakers.

Not much is really happening at the moment, largely down to time.

The diff is away being rebuilt as a 3.62 LSD, and there are stacks of parts waiting to be fitted. I'll have lots of free time to do this starting mid-November, so expect some updates after that.

Excellent thread. Pretty much the same as I've done with my E21. Only difference is I opted to fit fast road cams and a shot of nitrous to the m52/2.8 instead of going s50.

Look forward to seeing more progress.

My 21.

Not much at the moment, no.

The diff build is still ongoing. Discovered that the thread on the pinion is knackered, so had to source a replacement as it was too far gone to be repaired. That should be finished this week, with a view to me collecting it next week.

However, it isn't going to be fitted onto the car, as I've found a new (albeit possibly interim home for it), which is an E28 race car I've recently bought.

Anyway, the plan is to get the red car down for bodywork in a month's time, as the guy who's doing it is going to do it over Xmas, so hopefully it's still on-course to be on the road for spring.

I did remember over the weekend that I dropped one of the seats off to Bespoke Leathering when I collected the refreshed M5 interior, so I need to catch up with John and see how that's looking. One of the benefits of buying the race car is that it has given me a couple of ideas for things that could translate on to this one - seat sliders and mounts, for example.
