Jaguar XJ6 3.0 V6 2005
Discussion
Picked up on the weekend for less than 7 bags.
Jaguar XJ6 3.0 V6 SOVEREIGN 4DR AUTO 2005
59k miles
Plenty of spec including Jaguar premium sound system, which is rather bloody good, it has to be said
Bi-Xenon headlights are great and the ride on the 19s is much better than I expected
Heated seats are lovely as is the heated front windscreen
3.0 V6 feels up to the job of motorway cruiser, a V8 would be have been nice but I'll be putting 25k-30k miles on this car next year.
It really is a wonderfully lovely thing. Interior and exterior are spotless and the book is full of main dealer stamps.
In my eyes, a nice Bargain Barge.

Bit of mpg info:
On the way home from collection (80 miles of free Sunday morning mway) the OBC said 33.5mpg
Journeys to work have been hit and miss with traffic - most have involved crawling through sections of the M25 at waking pace. These journeys have been about 25mph to 28mpg.
On one clear run home I set the cruise to 70mph and it came up as 31.3mpg.
Based on my first fill up and manual calculation, I trust the OBC to a degree I've never trusted one before - across the tank is was accurate to 0.1mpg.
The average was 26.9mpg, but there was a bit of experimentation on empty slip roads etc, y'know, like you do with a new car.
Weirdly, it seems to return better at 0.8 - 0.9 leptons than 0.7. At the lower end of that scale is cruises at about 1,900 rpm and seems to want to drop a cog for inclines or hold the gear and suck fuel. At the upper end it's at about 2,500rpm and seems a bit happier.
Through 10 miles of 50mph specs I recorded 41mpg from a rolling start, just in the interest of science.
Seems to be about equal to by old e39 530i so far. But I'm a geek with tracking this sort of stuff, so can provide an update once we settle into a routine if that would be of interest. With a bit of normality and improved weather / commuting conditions, I'm expecting late 28-29 to be the annual average.

What sort of bhp and torque does the engine on this make? I was admiring a one of these (albeit the V8) the other night, parked on a street where I work. Respect must be given to the Jaguar designers for sticking to the classic XJ look with this so far into the last decade. They have so much character compared to the shapeless blobs Jaguar churn out today.

I'd agree, they do have character in abundance. I'm genuinely not sure about the new XJ, I guess time will tell as I see more of them about. I have to admit though, the facelift XF, espcially the XFR in the right colour/spec combo is a very nice looking thing. Different from Jags of old and a very modern direction, so hard to compare apples with apples, but I like 'em. Would like to run one in a year or two time.

I love Jags, and that is a lovely Jag.
The spec is very 'Sovereign' - I was originally looking for something a bit more 'sport'. Black leather, black leather steering wheel, black headlining and dar wood finish...But this one was such a nice example in terms of int/ext condition, age, miles, history, locality and price that I just had to have a look. Then sat it and if felt so very different from anything I have ever owned, that I just thought "it's not what I thought I wanted, but I like it - I think I'll have a bit of this"

Great car!
Did you give any consideration to the 2.7 diesel?
If I'm honest, not really. I can claim my business miles at 18p/mile for a 2.7 diesel and 26p/mile for the 3.0ltr petrol. It was an easy decision - I think that I worked out that based on the maths, any big diesel was going to have me further out of pocket.Did you give any consideration to the 2.7 diesel?
Plus, I'm a sucker for the simplicity, noise and driving feel of nice NA petrol engine when of a decent enough size.
Mind you, it's a very quiet engine up front. Only when prodded do you get a bit of a growl on.

£7k for that much car? Borderline theft, non?

£7k for that is a bargain!
Timing and type of car helped. I'd stared sniffing around the internet, saving 'favourites' to get a feel for how quickly they were moving (not very in Dec..)
I was using my old Passat which I didn't need to trade in as a family member can make some use of it.
And I went shopping in the first weekend of January when footfall is low and the euphoria of Christmas has been replaced with credit card statement on the mat.
Plus, I was shopping for a big capacity petrol barge. Which wasn't 'sporty' or '4X4'.
Combine that lot together and it made me a confident buyer. Didn't mess anyone around - told them I knew I wanted an XJ, just a matter of which one. Gave my price and held out on the basis that they were free to take it as an offer if they wished and keep hunting for another buyer (from a very small pool) willing to pay more (for a very niche car) whilst I went back out to look at other cars.
It was a 3-coffee deal, but we got there.
I was happy with the outcome and the guys in the dealership made it an enjoyable experience - I guess they ended up happy with the deal as well - they cashed the cheque
