March update:

Odometer is now showing 64,000, so now 4,000 with me and 1,500 for March
Overall 26.75 mpg, March showing 27.33mpg.
Also hit 30.24 mpg average over a full tank this month - a personal best which I thought was rather nice.

So, the new battery I paid £120 for has been on for 1 month now and the gearbox has been 100% faultless with zero error messages!! biggrin

The rest of the car has been faultless as well.
Even wifey likes it now. Before I got it she was a bit "Arfur Daley" this and "smoking jacket" that, but after a few journeys she is slowly falling for the grace, pace and space(ish).

Looking forward to some decent weather to give the old girl a full day wash and polish.

April should see me booking in for some service work. Doing some reseach for a good Inde. Will be looking to gearbox oil change and give the car a good inspection for future weak points. Will update at the end of the month.

I'll pop back to this thread once a month with running costs, thoughts and any photos.

Also, thanks for the advice (more than once) on battery causing the gearbox error message - you did bet your XJ on this being the cause back in Jan, so I'm glad to say it looks like your car keys are safe hehe

No problem Matt.
Mines gots issues now. Sounds like the big ends gone... one week after a full Jaguar intensive service... being investigated this week... now without a car, will have to get the V12 taxed and MOT'd.. it doesn't rain it pours.frown

Sorry to hear that, doesn't sound great.. good luck with the investigation.

Still, having to use the V12 - they do say that every cloud has a silver lining smile

Yes, the big end has gone! I'm looking at a repair that now costs more then the car is worth.. However, always the optimist I'm sure that the factory wont let me down and will assist with a very generous contribution towards the replacement. It is a very rare occurance this fault on the 2.7's. Not happy about driving the V12 in the rain, but do like the moderate speed side ways action when taking my youngsta to nursery!
I'll keep you all posted.

Bit of an update and all is good.

The Jaguar does everything I want and more, really pleased with this car so far.

Had the big 70k service done in April which include spark plugs - Winspeed did it all for about £500 which is not too bad.

Amusing story - I was in convoy with some guys at work on our way to an event at the Four Seasons. Mate in front in a 5 series was directed to the carpark by the friendly greeter staff. I was directed to pull in, another helpful man removed my luggage from the boot and the first gave me a ticket for the valet parking. What's going on? Did this mean the carpark was full? Nope. Matey boy behind in his E Class was also directed to drive on and park up 1/4mile away. And that my friends, is how the big Jag opens doors! Had a chuckle over a beer at that one.

Bit of mpg info:
... But I'm a geek with tracking this sort of stuff, so can provide an update once we settle into a routine if that would be of interest.
Now we are 7,200 miles in, using the proper brim to brim method at each fill - useful app if you've not got it. 30mpg over an entire tank is possible and that's not one journey so includes half a dozen cold urban starts. Impressive.

Thanks for the update Matt. I'm still enjoying mine too, it's just such a nice car to drive - the mental rear parking sensor is even behaving itself now the weather has warmed up too! I just need to find someone to buy my CLK now.

Good to hear.

Do you find that your parking sensors get set off in traffic by big bore motorbikes? Or maybe it's just mine being a bit mental hehe

Rare but not unheard of. How did you get on?

There are no tabs to locate the bearing shells, and it seems that they sometimes shift as a result, and obstruct their own oilways.

There are also issues with the oil pump: this is crank-driven but its housing supports a tensioner for the timing belt and can crack and fail. It's been redesigned more than once, but this is no guarantee of support from JLR when yours breaks.

Interesting thread, the data is useful ad I am considering a 2004 XJ 3.0 as my next car. It is a 1 owner with 65k miles, I am interested in the running costs as I usually do about 20k miles per year. I recently sold my 2005 525d BMW that was only doing 34mpg, so if I could squeeze 30 out of a Jag on a run it would be good.

Still undecided but I think I will go back for a 2nd look.

30 on a run is quite achievable. I get low twenties on short urban trips, around 30-32 on longer runs (decent A road), and I've had as high as 37 on a long motorway trip - although I kept to 70 or so. 80-85mph on the motorway will still be low thirties.

That sounds good, although a lot of my miles will be on the M25 so stop start traffic a lot of the time it seems like a XJ would not be much different than my previous BMW.

My commute is southern stretch of the M25. 30+mpg over a tank is possible, but heavy stop/start pulls it down into the mid-high 20's.

So far the XJ is running at the same mpg, if not slightly better than my old BMW e39 530i auto.

The 6-speed box helps, 70mph is about 1,900rpm, 80mph about 2,200rpm and 90mph about 2,500rpm.

My dad regularly got a genuine 32mpg over a tank or two through France. This included some pootling around too.
