My city driving is between my house and the train station and does not involve start stop traffic, thus the better mpg. My highway consumption is a little worse than the official one.
You still seem to be doing a bit better than most ST220s.http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/ford/mondeo-ii...
Why are the 55/06 higher road tax? - i thought engines were supposed to get more efficient year on?
Also are the 06 higher depreciation and more difficult to sell on?
Whilst a ST220 may have a niche i can't see many takers for a GHIA x 3.0 with the higher road tax
Btw the jump in road tax price is @ 38YEARS worth of historic road tax increases!!!
Not seen much evidence of it affecting the cars - the difference in tax is about 3 tanks of fuel.
I'm somewhat amused that people buy a 3 litre petrol and then complain about the fuel economy...!
For reference I typically see 25-30mpg - over nearly 5 years.

If the mechanically identical older version could only do 151, why was it necessary to limit the later one to 155?
They are not limited, mine standard would go faster than that.As for fuel, they are excellent given the power output and age of the car. A regular 60 miles commute would kiss 40mpg at 55mph, or 36mpg at 70mph.
Probably the most complete car Ford has ever built.

Are you talking about tdci? Mrs gets about 24.6mpg As for fuel, they are excellent given the power output and age of the car. A regular 60 miles commute would kiss 40mpg at 55mph, or 36mpg at 70mph.

fk! Mine definitely needs a full service urgently! It's averaging 25mpg and the best I have ever seen was 35mpg at a steady 60mph on a 250 mile journey! 40mpg!!
I've averaged 26 over the past 2.5 years - with a pretty even mix of town and motorway driving. Mine has the older 5-speed box, so you'd expect slightly worse mpg than the newer cars, but the best it's even seen is 31. Overall I'm happy with it, not that much lower than the 2.0 Alfa that it replaced.Symbolica said:

Mine is a '54 plate 6-speed and I do love it. I *THINK* it has every option except Sat-Nav. Lovely family motor as far as I'm concerned and does the fun bits too if you want it too.I really like these cars, and this looks lovely - I really like what you've done to it.
I used to work at Ford 'back in the day' and the package came with two company cars from the Blue Oval brands - Jag, Volvo, LR, Ford at that time. I consistently chose the ST220 over 4ltr XJs, Discos, etc as I thought so highly of them. We were lucky to keep each car for a maximum of only 5 months or 5k miles, so plenty of opportunity to change, but when the ST220 was on the list, it was always my first choice.
Lovely engine, superb handling and very, very solid and I miss it to this day. One of my favourite cars out of all the cars I've owned/driven, and that includes some very nice mettle.
