I had searched a few times to try and find out what the five spokes were without success, thanks for identifying them for me, I have them on my daily (e36 328 Auto) now.

The gold wheels seem to be marmite, personally I think they look good. You can’t tell from the pictures but the bolts are sprayed to match the bodywork.
They look good but I think they're slightly the wrong shade of gold, I reckon a darker/bronzer shade would have been perfect.

Great car though, I really miss my compact and still sorely regret not keeping it for an engine swap when the M44 went pop, couldn't afford it at the time though.

Bet that must shock quite a few people! As nice as the split are, I'd swap them for steels and keep it badged as a 316 for the sleeper look.

Must be loads of fun.

We bought a new mini when first launched. It was in the garage all the time for repairs. They gave us a 320d compact for a week. We loved it so chopped it in for an e36 318ti sport. It was a joy to own and drive. Couldnt understand the stigma associated with it.
Loved the revs, held the road really well and controlable when giving it sideways action. I was proud to own it. They still look good to me.
The misses at the time had our little one and she replaced with a meriva. I never drove the meriva.

We spent this Friday just gone at Blyton Park on a LVS Racing track day, Excellent weather and a very nice track.

Here are a few pictures;

And here is the latest edition to my car, an apex cone inspired racing stripe!

Finally the token arty 'low shot' picture with sunshine glare....... Notice the stickerbombed headlight? I expect it to be as marmite as the wheels.

For the track day I purchased some R888s and I was very, very pleased with them. If anybody is unsure, the level of grip they offer over standard road tyres is surprising and in my opinion well worth the outlay.

Cracking motor.

Did you carry out the M50 conversion and how did it go?

Quite interested because a Compact ticks a lot of boxes for me but only the E46 come with a 2.5 from the factory.

The M50 conversion takes a couple of hours to do and makes a noticeable difference, much better when teamed with a remap though.

However I have now chosen to take a different a route.

Behold a M3 evo engine

and currently this is how we stand

Much, much more difficult than fitting the 2.8!

Good man! I would be lying if I said I hadn't been sorely tempted by the prospect of an E36 M3 compact, look forward to seeing the build progress... cool

Did the extra weight of the M52 make much difference to the handling?

Given that a stock 318Ti compact is 1275kg, a 323Ti is 1330kg and a 318TD compact weighs 1355kg

A E36 328i coupe is 1395kg and a E36 M3 1510kg I'd expect a 3.0 compact to weigh less and retain a close 50/50 weight balance.

I know the kerb weights etc but I've read anecdotes about the 318is handling better than the 328i so I'm curious if any difference was felt with the 316, albeit subtle. Given that the car may have been on the same tyres and suspension before and after the swap it would be an interesting comparison.

ETA, I should probably have said nimbleness instead of handling.

To be honest, there are lot of people who purport to know a lot about e36s, engines and chassis but actually when you scratch the surface they know very little.

I personally haven’t seen a noticeable difference in the handling, but being honest I don’t think my ability behind the wheel is good enough to, firstly notice and secondly have any notice taken of my opinion. I can say for sure though in a straight line it’s a lot faster!

Moving forward slowly and its almost back in ne piece now

I wish more people could admit to this! I feel the same way, does my car handle significantly different when it has a full tank of near empty tank, not really, yet that is 70Kg of weight change.

So long as the suspension and brakes are suitable for the weight/power of the engine then I really don't see the issue.

Crack on!!

That's good to know. I love engine swaps so like hearing real world experiences with them. I know which engine I'd rather have.

I agree, it always amuses me on a track day when an estate agent in golf GTI talks about adding a couple of PSI into his tyres to cure the crippling under steer or some other similar bks. Karters however are the worse by a long way.

Most people, and I certainly include myself in this, can talk a far better lap than they can drive.

Ace.

I personally think the kidneys and headlamp internals look naff but other than that, I like. Even the wheels.

I even kinda like the double-bluff M3 badge on the boot. People will inevitably laugh and say "Yeah, right!"... right before they wave your arse goodbye hehe

So a trip to the RR was a disappointment the figures were not good, and I now have more issues,

Currently the car won't start at all, it will just crank over and not fire!

I think I have solved the blowing fuses issue now and the fuel gauge works again.

The car is 15-20% down on power but still feels very, very quick.
