Looks like you got a bargain, have you heard of Monkfish performance? Once introduced the drug will start and before long you will end up with a twin-turbo'd or supercharged monster. It all starts with a 'rip shift' and before you know it, you'll be adding short-shifter, Brembo brake upgrades, switchable exhausts, the tuning potential is ENDLESS!!

Enjoy thumbup
Thanks, yes I have already checked out their website.

Think I'll start off small with a service kit and some rear brake pads, but from there on, who knows!! wink

That is a huge amount of car for a what i would imagine is a reasonable price paid.

i know exactly where your coming from with tatty cars, i was forever keeping my cars cleaned and polished, then i bought an old smoker of a focus diesel just to run around in and i dont care if i scratch/dent/bend it! the thing has had some serious abude, 50k over due a cambelt, never cleaned, i basically live in it!

anyway enough about me! excellent car and i hope you enjoy every minute of that V8!!

if it's the one i've seen then it was around the £4000 mark

good car but that one will need a lot of work on the rust spots

and with that sort of mileage it's only a matter of time before it goes bang

Well that's one way of looking at it! And I'll agree with you on the rust spots, but only if you wanted to make this car mint.

As for blowing up, only time will tell. I am quite sympathetic mechanically and tend to spot the onset of issues before they become a major failure. I've had high milers before and with a combination of shrewd purchasing, dilligent ownership and a dose of luck, they've only needed routine servicing for the main part.

Indeed, I think it was also the feature of the "£xx,xxx spent on fuel" thread.

I'm just jealous I didn't have the balls to buy it myself. smile

sorry, i thought everyone on here was entitled to their own opinion,

truth is the mileage is big, it's a high performance motor and it will eventually go bang

Em177 has a point 99t

Anyhow, looks to be a cracking buy, my mate had one of these a few years ago, sold it as he couldn't drive it in a straight line, it was literally sideways at every opportunity. It took some proper abuse with no issues whatsoever.

I think you're missing the point. OP drive it, enjoy it, don't spend too much on it and keep it going. even if it does go bang you will have had enough experience to either get something else and look back with fond memories and no regrets OR then have the knowledge and lust to buy another. regardless it looks fantastic and i'm very jealous, but in a good way!

It's not a high performance engine. It's a very old pushrod design and 350HP from 5.7 litres isn't really stressing it. Unless supercharged, it's not an engine that goes bang.

Indeed, my thoughts would be that the car will be lots of fun while it's sound and if something makes it less than economically viable to repair, then an FD + LS1 + Samberg kit will be a lot of fun. smile

yes

The LS1, particularly in the cv8 tune is so ludicrously under worked it's a wonder it can even muster the effort to turn over at idle smile

Couple an under stressed engine in general with a presumably (at that mileage) under stressed life loping up and down motorways at little over tickover and, whilst there would be some things I'd worry about on a monaro, the engine wouldn't be one of them pending a decent history which sounds present.

I should add - cracking buy, and as OP has hinted a massive dollop of car for not much cash.

It's not really a high performance car though is it, it's a cruiser with a big V8 in it. Despite a 5.7L V8 under the bonnet, they only knock out 320-350bhp depending on model. Furthermore, they have really long gears, 2nd goes to nearly 100mph iirc, so you can imagine that at 80mph on the motor way, where this car has spent most of it's life, the engine will be barely ticking over. As long as it has been properly maintained mechanically, which certainly seems the case, I don't think OP really has anything to worry about.

Didnt they design the engine to be fit for purpose for around 300,000 miles minimum??? I read that somewhere when I was researching these as I came within a days delay of picking one up!

It's a very understressed engine of an old, tried and tested design. Sure, it will let go at some point but not any time soon, I wouldn't have thought. Especially not with a keen eye for servicing and fixing faults. The tatty bodywork is the biggest issue, and once that's sorted it will be great, and should do another 200,000 miles without much bother.
