I am going to opt for either the v6 406 coupe or a granada cosworth engine. I have had both and they are epic (and bulletproof) engines!!

Both are cheap to source too

Actually considering how rare a decent straight 205 is I would be offering it to the 205 challenge rally nutters

Best update this. Decided Impreza 4wd is the way to go.

Incredible. Just read the whole thread and what you're doing is what I was gonna suggest, does the impreza need shortening to fit the 205 shell over?

That it does. Exactly 100mm difference in the wheelbase.

I'm going to take it out of the rear footwell so I can retain the fuel tank etc. Will require new fuel lines, brake lines and a custom prop shaft but overall fairly straightforward.

Impressive. Can't wait to see how it turns out. What is the width difference like? Are you planning on extending the arches out?

If I ever get rich I may want to buy it from you hehe

So yeah, defo need arches. I have a set of Rallye ones but think I'll go box arches instead.

Let's see how it turns out 1st, could be awful! biggrin

That looks very close to the very stupid idea I had for a 2 eleven style impreza spider, any chance of bolting the doors back on and ragging that about a bit? biggrin

This looks like a fun project. I would like to put forward a point of view if I may? I see a downside to this type of approach wherein the end result is essentially a SWB version - in drag - of the donor car. Though capable the Impreza isn't the last word in fun handling whereas arguably the original 205 is, so rather than transplant the Impreza suspension in its entirety could you perhaps figure a way to retain some of the fun factor from the 205? Would it be possible to retain the 205 front suspension, for example by shortening the Impreza shafts to suit and modifying the hubs to accept some larger bearings?

Another consideration is the wheelbase: the reduction in base will skew the Ackermann geometry of the original Impreza resulting in a potentially noticeable detrimental effect on handling. It may be easy enough to sort with some custom front hubs (if you keep the Impreza versions).

I am genuinely interested and look forward to seeing this develop!

Unfortunately, the reason an impreza is not a terrific handling car is because it has a high CofG and a poor mass distribution. Both of those factors will be even worse when transplanted into the (shorter) 205 shell.......

Good project, Olie! I'm looking forward to seeing the finished project!

I was wondering about Ackerman on the Citroen/ Mitsubishi thread and the Lexus/ Espace thread but no one seems to notice anything detrimental... Yet!

Interested to hear about the high CoG of the Impreza, I was always under the impression it had a low CoG with that boxer engine!

The engine has a "low CofG" if you consider it as a single lump of metal distributed around it's crankshaft. Unfortunately, because of where the exhausts and driveshafts must be, the engine is both mounted very high in the car (in terms of the crank height) and very far forwards (because the drive shafts must go to the front wheel centres). Those factors make the car a "poor" handling car in absolute terms, and are very difficult to fix and made the tarmac rally versions of the car a total nightmare to try to setup effectively (ie, you can make it grip, but the drivers don't like how it handles, or you can make it handle, but you compromise grip)
