Your nav computer has for some reason stopped functioning. The TV tuner is now providing output to the monitor, hence the crappy graphics.
Hmm... any ideas? Not keen on the retro look and although I don't use the sat nav much I'd like it to work!
I swore at it and it immediately started working again. I love E39's but they can be bloody odd sometimes...

Can make and receive calls fine... pretty cool. Can do it without touching the phone at all which is awesome. Obviously old tech but I've never had that in a car before. Is there a way to play music through bluetooth?

i had this happen on the E38....your nav unit is on its way out i'm afraid. I managed to get a replacement of a friendly chap for the princely sum of nothing. I never use sat nav but the, as you say, retro look to the text looks absolutely crap. that was about 15 months ago, maybe more, and i've not used the nav since!
Hmm I've read on the Internet that they do that then can be fine for years. If I were to replace it is there something better I can put in that retains an OEM look and I can still reset consumption figures etc?

I went for a Dynavin unit which retains the OEM look but it won't allow you to reset the consumption figures. As a non nav fitted car originally, mine had Low OBC so it didn't affect it. You'll be able to continue to use the computer functionality controlled via the stalk but thats it.
Oh that's a shame, I don't want to lose that feature. I wouldn't mind having low OBC. I don't get why I need a stopwatch/timer etc. The 528 also had it.

Sparks, Mine broke at the start of the year. If you need to get it fixed I know a guy. The problem with mine was the mech. I had the mech replaced, the software updated (3d maps and postcodes) and a new 2012 maps disc with speed cameras shown. £220 and took 3 days. Real nice chatty guy.

Much better than buying an unknown unit for the £3-400 they go on ebay.

Ref playing music, you cant via bluetooth but there is a lead you can buy that plugs into the AV unit (£25)and runs out to a red/white/yellow cable which you can then buy an apple lead (£30) that plugs into that and Bingo! video/music on the AV/TV part of your screen.

Not done mine yet but planning to, check out the MWstewert thread about E46 M3 in readers rides, he has fitted one.
Thanks Graham I'll keep that in mind. It's gone away for two days for some rust repair. I've also decided to have the front end resprayed. Well the bumper and bonnet anyway. Then a wheel refurb. That can all wait until the new year though, I didn't fancy putting the rust through another winter.

Before

And now

It was expensive, but it's a lasting repair.

Looks good biggrin

But how expensive? If you don't mind me asking.

Well worth the investment though. I have lots of niggles to fix on my 04 Z4 with this engine but overall it's such a good package I don't care.

It seems at 100k miles it's oil seals time to fail but they are all so cheap and easy ish to swap who cares biggrin

Only real things I'm a bit worried about is the clutch and maybe the VANOS, also that swirl thingy under the intake manifold. I really need to put aside a few days to just strip the engine down a bit and replace a load of bits and bobs smile

Dave
Just about £300. I was offered a tidy up for around a third of that. But wanted it done properly.

Interesting. I have a few spots that are ridiculously tiny but after this next coming winter may need doing. was it down your way?
Yes it was, a garage in Holton Heath about 5 miles outside of Poole. They aren't the quickest but they have a great reputation and I'm impressed with the work. Can pm you details if you like?

Some good looking E39's chaps. I really want my front bumper doing. It's got a lot of chips and some flakey paint. Might get it in sooner.

Opened the bonnet this evening for my fortnightly checks, although I couldn't check coolant level as the engine was hot. There's white dots all over the front of the engine, looks like coolant has got into the fan which has sprayed it about a bit. Not a massive amount though. I assumed it's coolant anyway.... All the cooling system is original. I reckon next week I'll be ordering a new water pump, viscous coupling radiator and pipes. I'll get some pics in the morning and check the coolant level.

Coolant levels are full so it can't be coolant.

Coolant levels haven't dropped. I don't know if headlight wash can get in? Does anyone else get these marks in the same area? I had them on my 528 but a bleed screw went so I assumed it was coolant from that. It's been suggested that it's just dirty water that has splashed up somehow.

It's E39 randomness. In 7 years of driving E39's this sort of thing seems to happen every so often for no discernable reason.
I'm well versed in E39 randomness hehe So you've seen this in your 530i?

do you have the polished lip? the only reason i'm not jealous of your wheels.

Managed to clip the corner piece of the undertray during the week frown put a hole in it. Going to try and repair it myself at work with some aircraft grade structural adhesive. (will be the only thing left in the event of armageddon!)
I believe so.

There was a pool of water in the lower engine tray this morning, gathered just behind where the expansion tank is. I was initially worried then realised it was probably where I hosed off the wheels Friday evening (only driven a mile since and it didn't move yesterday) Coolant hasn't dropped significantly by the looks of things, and it's done 300 miles since the last check.
