I know the car you have is quite good, but as you say, it will just be another, and not what you ultimately want.

Surely it's better to sacrifice yours to reach your goal, and spare parts can then be used to keep other standard cars on the road?

The purists won't like it - but nowadays most seem to realise that the modifiers do release standard parts onto the market, that keep standard cars on the road.

I'm guessing this finished beast is going to be around 3000kg?

Any idea what size of fuel tank you're going to need to get a decent range for your lemans trips?

Say 200 mile range @ 5mpg(?)

200 litres?

Awesome garage! Converting that to a bike/3 wheeler I see health and safety issues with the propeller.

I've seen the story of that Seafire somewhere, IIRC he's now sold it & a museum is finishing the restoration.

That is the sort of aircraft that should be preserved and made airworthy again.

I would never consider using an aircraft engine that could be made airworthy again for a car.

Is this yours? Was one of the best looking cars of the 'supercar department' at St. Saturnin. I guess I must be growing tired of yet another Ferrari and Lambo. Ultimas and Nobles never bore me!

Lovely car! Liked the personalised touches to it and the quality of them. Nice interior too!

(if it's not your car, the compliments go to the real owner!)

Bits of a Mk14 Spitfire wreck salvaged from the crash-site and cobbled together by the owner, who's on the Key Publishing aviation forum.

Storer, are you still planning a bespoke 2-seater sports tourer or are "just" going to re-engine the new RR?

Cheers,

Not planning to re-engine the Barker body.

Current plan is a two seater 'special' with the Meteor engine.

Having been to the Rolls Royce Enthusiasts Club annual gathering at Rockingham Castle this weekend and seen some great cars plus a fully restored Phantom III chassis on the P & A Wood stand I have come to a decision.

The Phantom III is too good to form the basis for 'Thor'. It needs a lot of work but could be a fantastic car again. Not sure if it will be me that does the restoration yet as I seem to have a few things on the go already.

That puts me back to square one with the Phantom II chassis. I still have to find loads of parts and, as the Club gathering showed, they can be very pricy (a pair of re-nickeled headlights at £2500!!!!)

It looks like I still need to find another donor car that is too far gone to justify repair.

If anyone knows of a Phantom II chassis with axles, steering, suspension, lights, grill, horns and any other nice bits (tall order I know) then please drop me an email via the website.

The Phantom III chassis on P & A Wood's Stand.

Enjoy

Hard decision I bet! Hope you find a new donor asap.

Correct decision i think! Would have been a pity to wreck a potentially good car like that, and yet end up with something that still has potentially a load of compromises. I still think, to make this work properly, a custom chassis is still the way to go. ok, maybe using selected bits of heavy duty old RR running gear, but with your own chassis you would have significant freedoms. Of course, you'd have to face an IVA, but that seems minor to me?

I know this is probably a heretical suggestion, but since you are planning on a rebody, and since all you really need is a strong chassis & running gear to take the weight of that enormous engine, have you considered using a van or small truck for the chassis?

How much trouble is an IVA?

I think the problem is finding one old enough. Trucks were more like re-bodied cars in the era that Storer is looking at.
