This build will be a journey of discovery, learning, trial and probably error with the finished product not to everyone's taste. I will do it because I want to and it adds a bit of a challenge to life.

Still watching. smile

I follow your logic with the fire truck and agree that if it was to be saved, someone else would have done that. I'm sure there's plenty of parts that you will be shedding, which the Carmichael community will be happy for. Breaking one can probably keep half a dozen others on the road.

So - you'll have destroyed a rare vehicle (made in dozens, not thousands) only to end up using almost none of it? What's the point, then? Why did you sell the Rolls-Royce chassis, which would at least have enabled you to call it a Rolls-Royce legitimately?

Rare, does this mean sought after, or should be restored for prosperity at any cost, does this mean all being equal anything with a rarity value must be maintained for whatever reason.

It may not suit all ideals, but there's a time to park the bike, get off and breath, we all take differing views on life, repetition doesn't make anyone's view more or less important or valid than anyone else's. its only perspective.

if your that bothered about a rotten old fire engine been cut up for something useful, then why don't you offer the owner of it strong money to save it and restore it your self?

as the engine is a rover meteor, id say that its found a spiritual home in a rover chassis..........

If I had the space I would! It would be worth advertising it through the aviation press - I bet it would sell through e.g. Pilot magazine.

I've been running lots of torque through my RR axles with big 35" tyres with no problems for years now.
All the damage and subsequent upgrades was done back in the day when i wad running a stock 3.9 rover, manual transmission and heavy off-roading.

The std diffs are total crap, but 4 pin ones with 24 spline half shafts and an autobox works fine for me. The front nearside wheel always spins when giving a bootfull, I suspect if i had limited slip diffs - i would start breaking things again.

I suspect nothing I say will dissuade you from your view, to which you are entitled.

As has been said, the engine was built by Rover (but designed by Rolls Royce) and was the result of a deal done over a meal by the then heads of both companies. Rolls Royce got the aero engine business complete with the factory and Rover got the tank engine contract and factory. The deal was sealed with a hand shake.

I will be making the unwanted parts available for others to use to keep their Carmichaels on the road/runway.

Range Rovers have been built in their thousands and Carmichael made over 400 6x4 machines. Considerably more than 'dozens'.

Given the derivative uses the Merlin spawned, and the single-source engineering I think the idea of a Meteor grafted into the 6x4 chassis is inspired - build us the ultimate Land Sea & Air Rover, Storer!

Where to start.

I have changed the plan a bit, well quite a bit!

My RR Phantom II chassis is up for sale, as will the Phantom III be soon.
Sounds like I have given up?

Not yet, just going in a slightly different direction.
I have purchased a Range Rover Carmichael Fire engine. It is a 6x4 so has 3 axles....

It will need some stretching (in both directions) but is will have 6 wheel disc brakes, probably air suspension, power steering, etc.

Oh, and it might look a bit like this

I have lots of other stuff going on so progress will be sloooooooow but when there is something to report I will post.

Paul
I admired your fire engine while walking the dog over the last couple of weekends.
If you see me about then introduce yourself.

The Range Rover is still useful as an off-roader, and sufficiently rare to be worth keeping original. However, I can't see the chassis or axles being up to that engine...
Chassis will take it easily. There are quite a few defender's operating now with with 1000lb cummins diesels in the front without any issue.

The axles will be a bit more troublesome, but you can use the heavy duty salisbury (essentially a custom dana 60) front and rear, or go for something else. Dana make a range of axles and I believe ashcroft have started offering heavy duty axles as well.

An autobox will be more sympathetic to the drivetrain than a manual gearshift.

I'd have thought a Defender chassis would buckle under the weight of a Cummins or other big US truck diesel!

Personally, I preferred the Rolls Royce idea, I'm not entirely sure why. But, it is Paul's project, he can do as he wishes and anything that ends up powered by a 27 litre V12 is as cool as a polar bears wedding tackle...

No... the defender chassis is remarkably strong...

The front axles are rated to 1500kg on the 130's, or 3000lb's

1500kg, or 3000lb? 1500kg is 3307lb, 3000lb is 1361kg.

Sadly it's this kind of bickering and sniping that may ultimately stop Storer from updating here.

It's his car, his engine, his project, his vision, his choice.

How about you just let the man get on with it and let the rest of us enjoy it.

It's great to see you deciding on a route to take... I know how hard it is to decide on a path when there are some many potential pitfalls in your path, DVLA etc.

I had a firm direction, took a decision and went for it, only for my plan to radically change after spending money due to finding a twist.. It's all part of the journey.

cant wait to see some progress.
