Re German Motor Co, I ran a Golf GTi bought from a friend in Putney. He and the previous owner to him had put the car through years of servicing there. Judging by the thoroughness of the service history and the overall condition of my car, I'd say they are good news.

Think they are still in business. I've seen a few German cars around South London wearing their sticker in the window.

Are you planning to leave it de-badged?

Really not sure, found this on ebay;

So the choice is there to 're-badge' it...

If I had a 560, it would wear the badge with pride, even though 99.9% of the other motorists didn't notice! hehe

I think I agree. I'm going to hold back ordering the badge though as might be getting the boot lid (and a few other bits) painted after it's running properly and MOT'd.

Meant to say 'wouldn't' not 'didn't". I swear my concentration isn't what it once was! rolleyes
Anyway, it looks like your car is well on the way to being saved, so that's great news! thumbup

If a car isn't run it will always get damp on the inside as the water in the air condenses (and is then replaced by new air with water) - my Audi was damp through lack of use, but this was soon resolved with a couple of 200 mile trips with the AC on and the blowers on heat.

The car is looking fantastic - the ultimate merc?

Thanks Oa, the windows not closing fully is certainly a problem, once fixed I will be able to establish if it can stay dry. As you say any car sat for a while create some moisture.

Ultimate merc? It was in 1987 I guess!

I have used these guys in the past for old font plates,

http://www.dmb.uk.com/cat/122/dealer-sets#page1

I wanted the original supplying dealer details on the plate so I created a jpeg in illustrator and sent it over and they arrived a few days later.

Nice little article here about the 560 from Brian Sewell, didn't realise Mansell owned it previously.

Great project, really enjoy following it.

Keep up the good work. Here's mine, not to everyone's tastes but I love it

Absolutely love these old Merc barges, especially that 500.

Don't know if any of you guys have seen this, but this would be my inspiration if I could get my hands on a decent 560 SEC

This is fantastic. These cars are amongst my favourite cars ever, just so damn cool and it's oddly warming inside to know one is being brought back to life again!

Keep up the good work, it'll be worth it!

Thanks Ross, hoping for MOT by end of month, sill to well up, ignition coil to replace, some fuses to check, new number plates to go on, engine needs a tune up and we should be largely there. Might need some tyres / wipers buut that's no big deal.

Will still be more work to be done when / if it's MOT'd but at least I can move it around then.

Great post, but I wonder how many garages would follow those nuggets of advice. It's a worry when there is so much to know with these and many other cars.
This is why I do my own work on the car (apart from seriously tough stuff)....I can trust myself. Can I trust anyone else?

The Sewell/Mansell 560 is currently on display at Mercedes Benz World in Brooklands if anyone's interested.
