It looks magnificent! Leave it standard and enjoy the luxury.

Cheers guys. They seem to be the sort of car that bring back a lot of memories and stories with people....they also seem to be the car most likely to be found in the hands of the original owner!

Intend to leave as is and keep up the condition.....will keep the thread posted!

great cars

I had an estate I paid £132 for on ebay, it had a bent valve (belt had snapped I think), it ran fine, but was slow and shook like a dying dog on tick over - I ran it for a year, it towed my race mini all over the country!

I bought a saloon one that was taxed and tested but wouldn't start for £28 (yep, twenty eight pounds) - a new ignition module and the mother of all t-cuts (it was so faded the red paint had gone pink) and I sold it to a mate of mine who used it for a nearly a year before the clutch went in it

This is the only acceptable thing to do with it. Then you should drive it around Europe.

Brilliant.

My gran had an estate one for years which she loved. It was originally my grandad's company car which he purchased for the grand sum of one pound. I thought it was ace because it could swallow me, a couple of mates and bikes.

It would be a shame to muck about with what looks like a pristine car. Just enjoy it as it I reckon.

Love it! Seeing this has made me miss my old Volvo (460). What a great first car it was for an 18 year old. I was devastated when it was written off my people trying to nick it after I sold it to a mates dad.

Think I need to buy another old Volvo now. That one looks absolutely mint!

Those seats are mega. Personally I wouldn't do a thing to it, just treat it to some occasional TLC and waft around in comfort!

I'd forgotten that video! Awesome! 'Some people get all the breaks, a Volvo's got just what it takes' - classic.

My mate picked up one of these but the Funeral Car version from an undertakers that had upgraded to newer models.

With 8 seats he uses it for his family car. Him in the front, Mrs and two kids in the middle row and the dog in the back row. All have those comfy luxury seats pictured about to sit on, acres of room and when the kids/wife get grumpy/moany he closes the glass privacy screen, redirects the music to the drivers area and enjoys the journey hehe

We have been on a few lads trips and it gathers loads of attention being painted matt black with skulls on it, a few of the boys even folded the middle row of seats up and slept in it!

I really want an estate and if one comes up locally in good nick it will be mine!

Thread update, decided I liked the car so much I'd put it into daily duty. At the end of the day the total price of the car is less than a new car would lose upon collection so if it's devalued a bit that's ok as I'm getting maximum enjoyment out of it and do tend to be overly fussy driving/maintaining/looking after my cars anyway.

So bought mid november with 38.5k miles, now 44.5k. Proper 30k per year service. How's it been? Faultless. Genuinely. Not even a rattle. Had a full service and timing belt done when I got it (pretty much the first non volvo service it's had) and will get a oil service done next week and hasn't used a drop.

Driving it is still a bit of an event, I've realised there is pretty much no 80's cars being used daily and very few 90's. The plush heated seats are still piping hot after 26 years, gets a lot of looks, probably not all good as people seem to love it or hate it. The engine has a ball of torque but is not quick to rev if that makes sense, still at 121 bhp it keeps up very well and eats up motorways at 80 @3k rpm in silence. 32mpg combined over the last 6k miles. Using it has done it the world of good, starts instantly now hot or cold and pulls better across the gears.

Here's to the next 6k.

gratuitous pic of the miles clocking up……

That looks fantastic, my late mother had one - and I used to drive it a reasonable amount shortly after I passed my test. The only thing I would add is to check coolant hoses, I had one let go on the M6 at speed, the plumes of vapour behind were quite something. Also, you've probably only got another 200,000 miles before major work needs doing hehe

That is so nice, there's generally something wonderful about bargetastic Volvos. They seem to have a complete tank quality the modern ones just can't match. One day..

That's fantastic, it looks so unsporty and comfortable (why on earth does my boss's diesel 730 have an "m-sport" badge on the sills?!). Please post it on the £1-£5 barge thread - it will be appreciated!

I drive the early 90s 4 box in my profile - let's support driving old but comfortable cars!

Good adventure today, friend who normally drives a land cruiser has taken a shine to my car and decided he wanted one. We found one in Kilkenny which is right at the bottom of Ireland, a 740 turbo diesel manual, 1 owner from new and 80k. 400 mile trip later and we were on the way home with it. The 2 cars sat at 80+ the whole way home never missing a beat. The td engine is loud but has a lot of character.

Lovely! Looks so wonderfully original, reminds me of my old 940. I'd still be tempted to do a turbo block transplant but then that's me. Good on you keeping another brick on the road.
