A V12 sized gamble

Christ that is quite something, I've always thought even the standard 5.3 should've been a fair bit more powerful so that must've been a very attractive prospect at the time. Aren't the TWR engines around 320hp? Does the conversion to manual still work with the sprung tail mount at the rear of the gearbox? Mine is still causing problems, firstly the bush simply wouldn't fit and locked the whole thing solid, so I had to carefully trim each end down which seemed completely wrong. Now unsurpringly the prop appears to be rubbing again when cornering hard. I suspect the bush was a crappy aftermarket replacement, despite the fact I paid for genuine!
The standard factory XJS 3.6 Getrag installation uses a similar spring mounting between the box and cross member as the auto the only difference seems to be the adapter marked 9.While the adapter which I've got fabricated for the saloon is different to that but still uses the same spring mounting which luckily doesn't seem to be any problem. Some of the other conversions using different types of box might use a different idea but in general most use the Getrag set up.www.jaguarclassicparts.com/uk/jaguar-xjs-v139052-v...
As for the 6.0 litre engines they provide a good upgrade in output even in the case of the Jaguar version while the TWR provided an extra 10-20 + hp over the Jaguar 6.0 litre version.
Well chaps, another update.
It's still going well, been out and about recently putting a smile on my face as per usual. I've just put my Series Landy back on the road so it's like driving polar opposites getting from one into another!
However, it looks like my time with the Jag has to come to an end.. as I went and bought another new toy on mother's day (without telling her) in the form of a TVR. The XJS has been great and I really am loathed to sell it but there we are.
A few last jobs to do on it such as aerial, front springs and shocks etc. And then sadly I will be putting her up for sale.

I hope one day that I will own a 6.0l once more they are just a wonderful engine and the sound of them starting up is like no other engine other than maybe a Spitfire or hurricane.www.jaguarclassicparts.com/uk/jaguar-xjs-v139052-v...

I love them
Hi mate, really love your car, read your topic before I went and bought one of my own . I'm absolutely loving it and it turns heads everywhere I go. It's going in for some welding and a complete respray tomorrow to get it ready for the summer.
Would you mind sharing where you found the best deals on quality parts? Also what's the normal oil pressure on these? Mine doesn't go above 3 Bars ever once warmed up.

Thank you very much sir and nice one on taking the plunge! It is amazing how positive the reaction to them is. Once a pretty unpopular car I think the whole design has definitely come of age, especially now when you park up in a sea of washing machines on wheels.Would you mind sharing where you found the best deals on quality parts? Usually I buy from either SNG Barratt or British Parts as theyre fairly close to me at Stevenage. On my car at operating temperature at say 2000rpm the oil pressure sits almost dead on the centre line of the gauge, it never really goes higher than that. Without looking I can't remember what that is in PSI!
Let us know how your mini restoration comes on, it's well worth saving them as I suspect they will end up increasing quite a bit in value in years to come.
SNG Barratt has been recommended to me before. Mine is getting completely stripped as of today and has quite a few issues, but it will get done. Gearbox makes horrible noises from first to second under full power when warm, oil pressure seems low, bearings on the left side have gone, knocks over bumps which I'm suspecting is the dampers, but it made a 2000km journey from Utrecht - Prague - Budapest - Cluj (my hometown) without missing a beat, so I guess it's a good base for a restoration. For the money I paid for it I'm happy.
I was having my Sunday morning coffee at my favourite Cafe and everyone was stopping to look at it and take pictures, vain, but strangely rewarding .

Sorry for the late reply. That sounds like a massive undertaking there! It takes some real commitment both on time and funds, but as you say they seem to get real approval from most people now. It's really satisfying and makes all those cold evenings laying underneath it getting oily worth it in the end. There's more I could do to mine to make it absolutely perfect but at the moment its value doesn't make it worth me spending any more on it.
You will probably find you still get the odd person that says they're 'the worst Jag ever made' etc. but ignore them, I say don't knock it until you've tried it. Only yesterday I was having a nosey at an XJS in a local car museum, your average anorak old man walks along and says to his wife 'after the E Type these seemed horribly American in their styling, definitely not to my taste.'
I had to bite my tongue!
For those that are interested here is what I've just bought as the Jag's replacement, definitely more your standard PH fodder but bloody good fun nonetheless:

Mine should be back from painting end of this month, wasn't such a dent in my budget, services in eastern Europe are cheaper. 1000 quid for a strip down, full paint job and reassembly. I'll understand that the XJS may not be everyone's cup of tea, but no one is allowed to say anything bad about the E-type!
Also bought new brakes, dampers, windows seals, but on the engine and gearbox side I'll just run them until they fail and just replace them completely.
Enjoy your new toy. While waiting for the Jag I'm blasting the 205 rally car around the Black Forest.

Flocos, hope you're getting on okay with yours. Did you get all the work done?
Just to let everyone know the mighty V12 left here today and has been taken away by her new owner Graeme who seems really pleased with it. I was gutted to see it go but new pastures and all that! I never expected this big old barge to get the reaction it did on here and would like to thank everyone that followed the thread and provided a few laughs and advice!

No prob's Lew, it was an absolute belter of a car, have you done a thread on the Supra in your profile?
I haven't! Maybe I should, I had a go in it today and well, the handling isn't what you'd call 'up to modern standards' haha.I'm not sure I could ever admit to owning that on here Mr Strachan! Get it bought, get it sold.
Lance it was a real pleasure, good to see a little man so into machinery! As you know you're more than welcome to bring him back at some point, surely aged 6 rates as the lowest age ever for a first driving lesson? Haha. I'm really chuffed for Graeme, he couldn't have made the sale any easier for me, and to boot he's obviously pretty chuffed with the car. I know it sounds a bit pathetic but I thought I'd really struggle to see it go, but nope, knowing it's gone to a good home has made me a happy man.
Hey Lew,
glad your car has gone to someone who is an enthusiast & will enjoy it.
Lovely motor that V12, the new owner will be chuffed to bits I am sure, but forgive me for saying I thought you could have got more for it than the advertised price. I viewed a couple that were no where near as good yours but were a couple of grand more expensive. Glad you enjoyed your time with the Jag, do you reckon you will have another some day?

I suspect you're right Brook to be honest, I had a figure in my head and just stuck with it so I'm happy, there's no doubt about it, it was a lot of car for the money. How are you getting on with Jag life?
We shall see about owning another one, never say never. It all depends if the right car comes up and what happens to values, they may quickly climb out of my reach. I wouldn't say no to a Series 1 E Type but obviously they're a bit beyond my means these days!
