Noticed last week that I seemed to be topping it up a lot more regularly. Assumed the missis had been using it liberally (it's what she does) but she tells me she hasn't. Also noticing damp patches on the ground when I park it anywhere other than the gravelly drive where it's hard to spot any leaks, plus some moistness on the bit of subframe under the tank. It's emptying at a fairly brisk rate. One piece of good news: the low fluid level warning light is working OK. smile
I know from other cars that I've owned or bought for the children that screenwash tanks generally get brittle with age and in fact I snapped the tab off the tank cap last week which may have been an early warning.

If r129sl were here, I think he would say "the leak is likely to be from the rubber grommet where the washer pump inlet penetrates the washer bottle; either that or the bottle has a split in it."

Might he know where replacements could be sourced? Or is it a get Googling and hope for the best job? Early efforts in that direction weren't promising.

I'd have thought MB might be the best bet. May be more expensive, but it'd only need to be replaced the once.

I did get a tank lid from MB a little while ago. My Man tore the tether the next week, but that's by the by...

My powers of supernatural divination allow me to disclose that were Mr r129sl here, he would say that the grommet for the washer pump is part number A1239973681 and is available from your friendly MB dealer at a price of approximately £2; and the blanking grommet should you have a hole without a pump is A0009973320 available at a price of £1.75. He also cries out from beyond the PH grave that sometimes the tube to the headlamp washers (if fitted) becomes detached behind the headlamps and washer fluid will then leak out there.

Remarkable. And they say the supernatural is a load of nonsense.

This is geekery on an epic scale, thank you! Just spoken to the guy in the Parts dept of Shrewsbury M-B, 35 years in the business and grew up with 124s. He couldn't remember selling a single washer bottle but did say that the grommets are notorious for failing. I imagine I will need two of these rather than one plus the blanker as my car does have wash/wipe? One thing that's puzzling me (well two things, the other one being how the hell do you get the bottle out?): where are the grommets located? Just wondering because if they're at the bottom of the bottle, how come there's still an amount of fluid left in, as per the awful pic attached? It drops to that level very quickly after a fill, suggesting a catastrophic leak, but only down to that point.
PS Don't have headlight washers thank goodness.

The lads in the Parts dept at Lookers Shrewsbury MB have been great. They were quite impressed to be given the part numbers (thanks Bolide Michael). Armed with that info it turned out they had the regular grommet in stock and they are happy to post them. I got three just to be on the safe side, total £9 and pennies including postage. They don't have the blanking cap. I could have ordered them but they only come in packets of 10 at £17 and I'm hoping I won't be needing one so I declined that offer. If anyone else wants to give the lads there a shout I can heartily recommend their service, they are called Colin and Les and the number is 01743 441191.
