Very good photos. It's a slight shame there is a modern car in the upper one, since without it the picture looks like it was taken in the early 1990s. The lower one could easily be captioned "France 1993"!!

Timelessly handsome... I will have to scratch my S124 straight-six itch at some point...

I agree, for some reason, that first one gives an initial impression of a period photo. I suppose that when you then see a modern car in the background, it adds an interesting twist, so I quite like it.

It's because if it had been taken in this country, there would be a Greggs, a Costa, a Paddy Power and 47 day-glo traffic signs within shot.

Harrumph.

Not every town in the UK is like that by any means...

Needless to say, the air con has a leak. Still, it was worth a try and the (excellent) Frog garage refused to charge because they were out of green dye and so could not say where the leak is. I was there with my boys single-handed. While waiting, my youngest overwhelmed the capacity of his nappy by a factor of about ten. By the end of my feeble clean up efforts, we were all covered in it. Hey ho.

The first pic looks old because I stuck an iPad filter on it, either instant or processed, I don't recall. It is taken outside the Hotel de France in La Chartre-sir-le Loir, a small town south of Le Mans which, like most small French towns, puts the UK to shame in so many ways. On or near that square were two patisseries, a butchers, a fishmongers, several homeware shops and a clothes store. All independent, all chock full of good stuff. The Hotel de France was excellent, utterly excellent, and only 95€ for a night in an immaculate and stylish two-roomed suite. Check it out, it has a huge motor sports heritage. Here's the hotel transport and a link to the website.

1) My friend owns the Hotel de France.

2) Will someone please sell me one of these cars?

MOT passed yesterday with no advisories, the tester being pleasingly incredulous at the mileage. That has increased by over 28,000 since the last test almost exactly a year ago.

And the air con failure is down to a burst in the cheap condenser fitted by Baister. So not so cheap when it has to be thrown away after a year. I managed to source a genuine NOS item for £163 delivered, a pleasing saving on the dealer price of £340. Hopefully that will be fitted during the course of the next week or so.

It is running really sweetly, though I may replace the front lower control arms, the starter motor and the air con compressor, those being the only significant parts I can think of that haven't been replaced in my three years of ownership.

On a somewhat related attack, the failed London car-bombing of 2007 used a pair of W124s. I've searched for their registrations (as given on Wikipedia) in the DVLA computer and found nothing. Does anyone know what happened - or is likely to have happened - to these two?

Yes one was an early model frown in that nice green colour.

Mileage is 306,000 exactly.

I remember the London attempted bombing car. It's probably still in a police compound somewhere. It made me think of the VW Polo ad:

Unquestionably THE best colour for a W124 of course, especially for a pre-Sacco saloon.

Hmm, I much prefer the later post-facelift W124, especially in dark blue, dark green, dark red, or that metallic mid-green they did. Even black can look really good, like this fabulously evil beast (shame about the wheels, but nothing a set of proper AMG wheels wouldn't sort):

Or would Sir like a Zonda engine in his anonymous silver executive express/family wagon?

Yes, yes please. Home build or AMG/tuner one off?

Having seen what the S600 engine sounds like with a naughty exhaust... V12 ftw.

I believe it was Brabus did the V12 conversions. The black beast was an in-house Mercedes-AMG E60, quite a few of those got built.

For me, the W124 is a bit like the XJ-S - the pre-facelift is the one I would want.
