I know there's another thread on the Ukraine crisis but now it's escalated to where it has it seems that the prospect of a European war deserves a thread of it's own.

So supposing the very worst happened and Russia invaded Ukraine wholesale, would and could the western powers intervene?

I'd assume Russia has vast conventional warfare capabilities compared with NATO excluding the US?

Can/would the US get involved? And is there a realistic possibility of it eventually turning nuclear?

Obviously like any sane person I hope none of the above happens and it can be resolved peacefully, but interested to hear the thoughts of others on how a military conflict might pan out.

There'll be no war between Russia and the West. What's at stake isn't worth it.

Russia's point of view appears to be defending its own interests and keeping order, whilst ensuring the government in place looks East before West. I doubt they're interested in trying to wholesale re-assimilate Ukraine into Russia.

Storm in a teacup.

That'd be the end of NP&E. Unless roaming charges were reduced dramatically, I suppose.

Post independence Scotland will send both the rubber dinghy and the paper aeroplane, leaving itself undefended.

There will be a lot of huffing and puffing, along with tut tuts and this is shocking, but it will all add up to anyone doing sweet FA. It just isn't in anyones interest to fight Russia. Putin knows this. If it stops at Crimea I can see Ukraine just leaving it to him and taking the hit.

He would tell Ukrainians that they would beat Russia in a war and could easily compete globally with the biggest superpowers. Whilst using the Japanese Yen as currency and being incredibly rich through somebody else's mineral deposits.

As an aside, I'm watching Paddy Ashdown gabbling on about how we're on the verge of a catastrophe. I suppose as someone responsible for many a political catastrophe, he should know what he's taking about.

^^^ this x1,000,000 rubles ^^^

Sanctions against Russia is as far as it will go...if that.

I find it a bit silly that the USA are scolded for "acting like its their job to be world police" then as soon as anything like this happens the whole world looks to the USA and asks for a reaction.

Thread on another forum [dunno if it's allowed but http://www.pprune.org/military-aircrew/535108-raf-...

shows 80%

YES 80%

reduction in front line strength of the RAF since GW1

So NO there won't be a war with Russia. Neither will be able to "influence" them either.

Peace dividend indeed.

Even if it had been an increase of 100%,do you really think war with Russia would have been viable?

Russia, Ukraine and/including Crimea were all part of the Soviet Union.

During WW2 there were fierce battles on the Crimean Peninsula. After the war Stalin killed nearly half the local population by deporting them to his labour camps. In 1954 Crimea was transferred within the Soviet Union from Russia to Ukraine motivated by "the commonality of the economy, the proximity, and close economic and cultural relations between the Crimean region and the Ukraine".

When Ukraine went independent in 1991 it therefore took the Crimea with it, Russian population and all.

No-one in the West is going to have a fight over Crimea - it's simply been Russian in reality for a very long time and is going to stay that way.

The question is simply how much more of Eastern Ukraine Putin is planning to "reclaim".

Given that UK feels entitled to a chunk of Argentina and a chunk of Spain because the local population is British it's not going to be easy making a case against Putin if he can show some sort of support from the locals. Watch this space.

Get the UN to threaten to revoke Russias entry into Eurovision, that'll make Putin think twice about any sillyness.

Then again is a UN threat worth anything at all?

Where's that from???

The thread that you linked to is claiming an 80% reduction from GW1 strength to a projected strength in 2020.

Not good, Ukraine is seeking guarantees from the west, having troops mobilised on both sides is inherently dangerous.

And lets face it we have been here before, hopefully the EU and US will not guarantee Ukraine's sovereignty.
