Art0ir. Sorry to revive and old thread. I am thinking about replacing my modern, anodyne, rather dull everyday car (E sixty something 630i) with an 840ci, as I have wanted one ever since I saw an Estoril blue one with silver leather cruise along the front of the National Gallery when I was about 19.

What are they like as a daily drive to do 15k or so miles a year in? I'm not concerned about mpg or insurance, but is it possible to live with one as a daily in terms of can you nip to the shops in it and then drive home without the engine having to get warm, are they quiet and comfortable on the motorway after a stty day at the office, will they sit in a traffic jam without overheating etc, etc, (all the usual stuff that one would take for granted with a modern car)?

Alex they're the perfect daily.

A designer sofa with a slushbox in heavy traffic and a locomotive on the motorway smile

I do similar miles to you and the only time it let me down was when the caliper seized, but that's to be expected on any car approaching 20 years.

A very special place to be.

That's good to know. Would you feel happy nipping to the shop for a pint of milk and then leaving it on the drive for a day or so, or do you look to get the engine up to temp on every trip?

The sticking caliper is one of things - it's happened on my 6 year old car!

They're a very under stressed engine. Don't get me wrong I never spanked it cold but I used it for dump runs, commuting, traveling to meet clients, grocery shops and everything in between. It was my only car for 6 months.

Anyone that is interested in cars should own one at some point. I can still remember the smell of the leather.

Thank you. She's beautiful.

I'm sorely tempted. If I can find an Estoril over silver leather, I think I'll have to sell the 6er and take the plunge

They are at the bottom of their depreciation curve and on the way up I reckon. Buy a good one in the spec you like - if you don't get on with it, it'll shift within a week for the same money or you might even make enough for a night out smile
