No worries; I'm enthusiastic about my new car but the usual bores constantly accuse me of labelling it the best car ever/faster than a Eurofighter, etc, etc.

Many just can't accept enthusiasm.if they were all culled, PH would be a much better place.

Fair comment.... Beauty in the eye of the beholder etc. I disagree. I think the 6GC is one of the best looking 4-door cars on the market, but then I also like the looks of the 5, just not as much.

What car (similar league) is better looking?
And what could £75k (minus the £22k discount I managed to get) have got me that would the job as well?

Genuine questions. Genuine interest...
Hmmm, if it were me and I had 75k?

Probably a Panamera. A little cheaper too, they can be had nearly new for about 60k. And I know they arent all that popular, so an Aston Rapide could be another shout, but you aint getting a new one for 75k.

In all honesty though, as a final answer, a new Jag XJ. 5.0 v8 for the power, get the LWB version for the wafty comfort, looks a lot better than the current BMW fleet, 15-20k cheaper, and i'd hazard a guess it will depreciate less too.

Still, half of the issue for me is spending that much money on a car. If you've got it, fair enough, then spend it, but the figures are eye-watering for me. Sounds crazy, but even if i was a millionaire, i still think i'd wince at spending anything more than £35k.

Yes ignore them. I think they're great cars and I have also imagined the 640d to be a really excellent 'real world' proposition. I remember sitting in one at Goodwood last year and found the interior quality to be incredibly high. BMW seem to be on a roll as I was in an M135i recently and loved the interior on that as well. The steering wheels on both were the highlight (tragically boring I know).

It must be a complete motorway monster.

I'm sure your wife/girlfriend shares your opinion.

What IS a contender for best car in the real world in your opinion? (real world being actual ownership, using daily, ferrying family/etc about, parking at the supermarket..etc etc)
Best car in the 'real world'? Not a diesel BMW obviously. Depends I suppose on how limited your world is. Despite your pathetic comments about my 'wife/girlfriend' I prefer to rise above those sort of assertions. After all the height of your scope is a BMW diesel biggrin.

Click for Readers Cars

There you go. I can totally understand that you're excited about your new car, who wouldn't be with a car like that! But it does come across as a little attention seeking to have two threads about it in such a short space of time. I'm not trying to be a dick at all, just pointing out how it might get on some members nerves :P

I don't care myself, it doesn't bother me how many threads you have about your car. I will say that this thread is severely lacking in pictures though!
Thank you - so Readers Rides (RR) is Reader Cars (RC). Got you - I was looking for the wring MEME wink

Perhaps a helpful moderator might move this thread into RR, or RC? Or the bin if it truly is superfluous.

As for pictures, I can repost the ones already posted, but I would hate to infuriate sensitive members further wink
Yeah I said Reader Rides at first, I got it wrong. Take more pictures and put them up! One can never put up too many pictures.

I'd be interested to hear your definition of the real world?

Mine is:
Fuel Economy and Practicality/usability

whilst retaining:
Speed

Is yours different?

Out of interest, what's the sound like when you put your foot down?
Avoiding the expected Ph bullst this has descended into, here is what a 640d sounds like. Of course it doesnt sound like a V12 Ferrari, but perfectly acceptable IMHO, and I've taken many people who dont like or own diesels in it who have been very pleasantly surprised by both the sound, and the turn of speed. I dont think it is a replacement for a sports car, but for what I want it for it is spot on.

That sound surprisingly well

Some of the comments on this thread banghead someone finally makes a post worth reading on GG, a detailed, well written review of their new car and this is the response?

I very rarely use this word but I genuinely detect some jealousy. A new 640d is a brilliant car is anybodies book, to claim it isn't or that its a waste of money is ridiculous. To also make claim that you would buy something different is almost stupid, yes, because you have different requirements rolleyes

The "I would buy something different" comments are almost always from those who wouldn't be able to buy one; ever.

Indeed.

My version of the real world= what I can afford/vs availability.

Some folk I know regard it as some miserable diesel stwagon.

Others a fleet of vehicles involving Italian exotica, various collector cars and some mundane st like FFRR for daily duties.

My point is the phrase the 'real world' is so much bullst. Nobody lives in the same world. Whatever the case a 640D is a fine vehicle but the best car? bkS. Possibly if you're some schmo who lives in the UK on a company car scheme I guess.

edit to add: the 'world' is a fking big place you know biggrin

I could never imagine spending that much money on a diesel, I'd always go for a cheaper petrol (probably an M3 if I wanted a saloon) and spend the difference on the fuel. Each to their own, though. smile

I agree the term is bandied about a bit too much but I think there is some truth to it. So much prattle about Ferraris/McLarens and Porsches it's just nice to hear the odd comment regarding a reasonable car. All be it £75ks worth of reasonable, but yes.

If nobody lives in the same world, then for the chap who just bought the 640d this is the best possible car for his personal 'real world'.

Regarding the 'some schmo who lives in the UK on a company car scheme' - I'd guess 80% of this forum live in the UK and 40% of them are on company car schemes, making this quite a relevant topic!

Look, opinions are opinions and we are all equally entitled but we can't discourage well written, well considered posts about someones pride and joy!

One could argue that everyone should own the best car for them in their real world, assuming "best" includes being affordable. I certainly do. smile

Anyway, great car Ares. Get a thread up and running on readers cars.

That's fine, if you live in his world. For those of us who don't, waxing lyrical about a diesel is always going to be boring.

What I find really strange is the posting style. The OP seems to want to batter people into submission with his fairly extreme views about his car. It's perilously close to trolling.

Was never a fan of the 6-series but I think the GC is a handsome car. I like coupe style cars and drive a VW CC myself. Certainly wouldn't turn my nose up at the GC! What colour is yours?

640d is no good as a company car really. Would probably be cheaper to buy / lease your own.

That's what tends to happen with high list prices that end up being discounted.

No. £2k cheaper, but a lot more expensive to run,
I don't think it is, is it? It's got the same running costs bar a little more fuel - and not a huge amount more I don't think.

btw, I think the 6GC is the finest car in the BMW range at the moment. I'd take one over anything else and that includes the M5. Fantastic cars.

I enjoyed reading your first thread, likewise the second.

If threads like these bother some of the previous posters, why waste your time posting anything?..surely there must be another thread which is more deserving of your time/opinion!?

FWIW I like the GC..one because it's still a rare sight on our roads, well at least on the M5/M4 corridor! Two because it hides it's considerable size well from an aesthetic point of view & three because BMW still do some of the best drivetrains available.

Enjoy the car OP & I for one would be pleased to read future updates on the ownership experience.
