True. But I need 9 or 10 X 19 or 20" - not usually a 968 size! Plenty of Cayenne wheels available. There's a number of them on the 'bay from £150 - £700 a set with tyres...

Thanks for your input!

I used to enjoy reading about this. Shame it got its roof chopped and fizzled out to sitting in a barn.
Well, I'll be taking up the baton!

There will plenty of tales of dering-do over the months, that's for sure.

I agree, the chop job was a shocker. Have you bought it?
Jeez NO! They started with the wrong car, anyway. Shadow 1 with steering box, crap brakes, crap gearbox....

No, I meant I was taking up the baton in spirit.

BTW New wheels are on the way......

Sooo, after the Motorpunk track day at Blyton Park a few things needed to be sorted.

Managed to smoke all 4 tyres, so adaptors from Superforma to allow Porsche 19" wheels with 275 section tyres to be fitted.

Old wheels and tyres.

New wheels and tyres.

Had to fettle the rear adaptors to get them to fit.

Also all 20 wheel nuts had to be machined to 60deg

Wheel arches cut to accomodate the extra width.

The wheels are Porsche Cayenne. These were chosen as Bentley wheel pcd is unique. The oem wheels have an ET of 41mm, the adaptors have to be 40mm min. The Porsche wheels have an ET of 60mm, so only 21mm extra "track".

The brakes had fried, so new seals for all 6 callipers! Look at the state of these....

So to prevent further heat problems, water cooling for the brakes. Front is easy - the pipe points the jet of water at the inside of the vanes of the vented disc.

Here it is being tested.

Water is supplied using a windscreen washer pump.

The rear brakes were a bit more difficult as they have solid discs. Got around this by drilling some Kunifer pipe with 8 holes and bending it to shower the disc from the outside.

New pads and the mother of all brake bleeds tomorrow...

To get the hot air from the engine out a bit better made some spacers to lock the bonnet about an inch high at the back.

And a proper bit of Motorpunk kit. Machmeter!!

New harnesses installed. Hopefully finished everything tomorrow. Then off to Castle Combe on Friday.

Hmmmm.. so much for brake cooling! Front pads after 4 x 15 min sessions at Castle Combe.

Oh, the front tyres too...

How to scare a Caterfield...

So the next thing is weight loss. The rest of the trim, plastic windows, some bits of metal chopped out, lightweight battery, sling out cruise/seat/hevac/central lock ecu's. Door actuators and lift mechanisms, replace petrol tank with a plastic cell.

Add new 30lt water tank for the brake cooling, as the 6 lt I had didn't last any time! I will probably junk the windscreen washer tank and plumb it into the brake tank. Rebuild the callipers again. Need to talk to Hispec about some 380mm discs and twin 4 pot callipers.

I would say, however, that the new wheels are a success. I just need lower profile tyres. Now looking at 305/30.19 to replace the 275/45.19 - this will also lower the gearing by around 10%, and lower the whole car by about 35mm. I need to put back the original front springs I was running at Blyton, but add some spacers so as to get a similar ride height but higher spring rate.
Despite the very warm weather on Friday, the engine was fine, although the trans got a little miserable and threw up a "check gearbox" message. So I looked underneath, and yes, it still had one. So I ignored the message and it went away after a day or so.
Longer term plans include taking out the whole dash and hevac. The I will fit a Vintageair heat & a/c unit and probably a Stack dash. That should save anything up to 50kg.. Plus a few words with Ian Curley about him making me a carbon fibre roof.

Then there's the subframe mounts, the lsd, shox, and more...

30 litres of water is alot extra to carry and will obviously affect your braking. Is there not an option for bigger brakes or some cooling ducts for cold air to them?
Good point. But it will empty pretty fast - just like the petrol tank! Bigger brakes are on the list and some extra air. But it will still need the water cooling.
Anyway, I will be able to brake a lot later - which is how you get in front with this car.

Another point is that 20/30 kg/lt is not a lot in a 2 tonne car!

Thanks for your input.

Those pads, bloody hell eek

Definately time for a brake upgrade then biggrin

As for the tyre sizes, have you got the rolling radius specs for either of those tyre sizes?
As my simple head calculator doesn't see the wider tyres as much (if any) of a smaller radius boxedin
Well, Paul, it shows you don't drive fast enough,eh?

Present tyres arem 275/45.19 - a bit bigger than stock in radius. New ones will be either 295 or 305/30.19 about 70mm smaller in diameter, so 35mm on the radius. About 1 1/2" in real measurements.

The Mintex M1144 pads are brill on the road, so may go for 1155 for track use.

There are some NOS R888 305/30.19's on Ebay at the mo'. Hopefully they can be scored for a decent price.

BTW, only 97db@ 3500 rpm - not bad for an almost open exhaust!

Re: brakes.

A bit of a physics lesson. How do brakes work? They convert the energy into heat. So, pad compound only varies the wear and fade point. My 1144's work briliantly on the road with no squealing - did fit anti-squeal backing though. A lot of brake squeal is caused by the high frequency vibrations causing the calliper piston to rotate on the back of the pad. Hence why you tend to only hear squeal on light braking as under heavy braking the piston is trapped and cannot turn. Anti squeal coating helps by bothe preventing said rotation or at least letting it do so quietly. Bigger brakes - common mistake is to assume that bigger discs have more "leverage" than smaller ones. Partly true, but it is the speed of the disc through the pads that gives the increase. Still lots of heat though with 2000kg behind it..... still will need the water cooling I think. These "facts" are from my experience in the businees and from being involved with the manufacture of brake callipers. Please offer your oppinions, but let's not get bogged down again, huh?

Anyway. The 30lt water tank will be here this week and I will also use it for the winscreen washers, which means I can remove the 10lt + tank from under the n/s/f wing. Less weight and more air to the brake. Then i will need to modify the airbox on the o/s so there will be the same increase of airflow.

Later I will be fitting some 380mm discs and twin 4 pot callipers (per side) which is better than he 280mm fitted plus twin M16 pig iron callipers.

Going to measure up for the plastic windows this week too and remove some more trim. Looking at a race battery to save about 15kg too. The present fuel tank is 110lt and steel, so a plastic fuel cell should also save a bit - have I repeated myself here? Dunno. Old age plus a large Malt won't have helped. Should have the 305/30.19 tyres this week too.

Got pulled by the BiB on the way to the PHSS today. Didn't like the rear bumper! Rectification notice etc. Also went on about its MoT wothiness and the lack of door cards "sharp edges" eh? Nothing in the C&U regs about that. What do you want in an accident, some metal panels or sharp wood splinters from the original wood trim? Paul Mk2 24v might like to comment on this?
He was quite proud that his unmarked car has been identified on PH - thought I would know about it!!!
Lastly, I have seen a proper BGW for the car (Big Gay Wing), much wider, much higher, much more upsetting for some. Hopefully.

Good to talk to the dozens of well-wishers today. Thanks.

Well, what can I say? Featured on the homepage. Life is now complete!

I will post some details very soon.

Since I last posted, here is a quick list of further work.
Plastic rear and side windows
OZ wheels with Federal track tyres.
Water cooling for the brakes.
Tillet (Caterham!)seats - anyone want some Bride seats?

To come.

Carbon fibre (really!) roof comes next week. That should save 20+Kg from upon high...
Alloy petrol tank.
New conventional suspension.
New gearbox - last one borked at Castle Combe trackday...
Large, no, 'kin large cooler for the above....
Remove dash and hevac. Nice small hevac to go in, so still have heat and a/c.
Power steering adjuster for a bit more "feel"
Controller for the gearbox to give manual change of the autobox.

More power needed, of course. Flat out @ 140mph at Goodwood and needing more!!

Find some lightweight outer door handles. You may titter, but they are SOLID brass!!

So aiming for about 17/1800 kg and eventually 600bhp.

I will post some pics for you soon.

Now registered as B8 FOU - proper!

Poor thing is sitting there looking a bit unloved at the mo'. Trans rebuilt, cooler to help prevent that happening again. Carbon fibre bonnet vents fitted. The carbon fibre roof goes on soon. Removed the hevac and fitting a small American one. HiSpec are going to make some 8-pot callipers and big discs soon.
Various other things as time/money allows. Looking for further weight reduction, then an Emerald ECU for a bit more power.

So an update and thread revival.....
New Year means for a lot of us it's time for a diet. So it is for the Bentley.

Start with cutting off the roof panel (seriously)

prepped for the glue for the carbon fibre panel

That's 20kg saved!

Now, removal of the brass door handles at 4kg the set!

8kg of wiring from here, so far.....

There's about 10kg of ecu's , door locks and actuators too.

I am looking at replacing the door frames (solid brass) with alloy too. The key barels were just under a kilo the pair - yes, solid brass again!!
Hoping to remove at least 100kg this time and more when I replace the 4 front calipers with alloy ones, plus alloy bells for the discs. Should be able to fit 360mm brakes from Hi Spec.
There's a new Racetech dash coming - that'll save a kilo or so.
This is getting serious! To replace the door handles I am making plastic push buttons, so they'll weigh about 3 parts of f all. The rear screen and rear door windows are plastic. I want to keep the front electrics for road use/ The HEVAC is out, but I have a small American one to go in as this car REALLY needs a/c.
The active ride is now disconnected as it will default to the stiffest setting, and the self levelling will go too as there isn't much weight in the back! Apparently, Bilstein make front shox for the non active ride SZ series, so that sounds good - even at £250 each. I havent weighed the car for a while, but with all the current work I am hoping for a weight of around 17/1800kg. I think the roof and door stuff should make a huge difference due to being high. Pendulum effect etc.

More soon!!

You are right.
The roof metal is 1.5mm thick! Stunning quality these cars and so easy to work on too. Not that the factory ever expected some nutter to remove the steel roof and replace it with carbon fibre......

Roof fitted and glued.

Weighed the wiring removed so far..... 8.5kg

Got a bit bored with the wiring, so decided to fit the trans cooler.
Top brackets

Bottom bracket

Coat of paint

Top brackets welded

And cooler fitted

That just needs pipework, fan and scoop, then it is done.
There isn't any space left for any more rads/coolers now. Water radiator, a/c condenser, PAS cooler, chargecooler water cooler rad, engine oil cooler and now two transmission coolers!

Been a busy week doing all this. Need to do some proper work now.

I am glad you folk like this. Makes it all the more worthwhile.

Few more bits.
Transmission cooler brackets.

Welded into place

Lower bracket - note the lightening holes!!

And trial fitted. At an angle as that is how the oem cooler for the chargecooler is fitted. So follow them as i don't know what I am doing!

More to come later. But I REALLY must get on with some proper work!

It has been sat a while.
Hope to be back on it soo.
Plans are for a trans controller to give paddle change, Emerald ECU for more power and control. Race dash. That lot means a whiole heap of wiring can be removed.

Sorting out some shox. Bilstein do them! Just need to get them valved correctly.

Hubs go off to HiSpec soon to make some Monster 8 pot calipers and large discs.

Probably going to start on it again in March.
