It does me too - I would really like to have a remap on ours, but theres a lot of horror stories about the gearboxes being made of chocolate. I'd hate for a remap to reduce its lifetime, even though I think our gearbox has been replaced in the past.

Great read, it's good to hear from a true owner against the reliability. Personally something like this would have terrified me to own assuming some large bills. How many miles is it on, just out of curiosity.

Booted it. Strange noise, less power, smokey

AA tell me that Air Flow readings are all over the place.

Does not like starting, although once it's going it will idle smoothly. Stutters under power.

AA think Turbo related. Might be right - but smoke is wrong colour. I'm hoping for an injector....

Time will tell.

Time for an update....

First of all. ^ Above picture was due to wife putting Petrol in it. Took some time to work this out as she did not get a receipt. Still the fuel system got a good clean out. Fortunately it was a 50/50 mix and did no long term damage.

My eyes are now wandering over TDv8 and it's highly likely to move on in the next 7 days. This is the first time I have ever bought the same model of a car in succession.

LR - you build a good 'in. Ten years old, and still holds it's own.

Yup. She has the mechanical ear of a toad so noted nothing wrong. I then took it out and noted plenty wrong.

I've got no problem saying it was me, but on this occasion it wasn't...

Thread brings back great memories smile

I had a silver 2003 plate L322 HSE too - bought with some trepidation and quickly found, as you have, what a great all rounder it is. Towing, green laning, commuting, family holidays - it did them all in comfort, and could hustle when required. I used it as a daily for a year or so then gave it to the wife to run for another couple. We ended up buying a 2009 TDV8 Vogue too so I inherited this one back at 100k'ish miles for another spell as a daily. Apart from a couple of fairly hefty jobs just after we got it, it rarely needed more than normal servicing. Absolute belter of a car. Only got rid due to fears of the pending chocolate gearbox issues you mention (and also partly due to feeling a bit silly having two full fats on the drive). Been trying to recreate the same level of contentment ever since (without success!).

You'll love the TDV8 if you loved this one - the extra power is addictive, though the mpg isn't really much improved. Been trying to tempt the wife into a Q5 or something to give me back the Full Fat as a daily but she's having none of it!

Test drove a lowly RR Sport yesterday. It was dreadful. Reminded me of a Golf Gti, with none of the nippiness. It was...'pretend nimble'. The only reason I can think that people buy these behemoths is the image. Very sad. I'm aware the FFRR is a different proposition, but still... .

What engine was in the sport? The 4.2 supercharged is good fun in the right places.

It wasn't supercharged, whatever was under the bonnet. Left me completely cold. I mean if you want something that handles like a car, has a similarly harsh ride and is as quick as a quickish one, what possible reason can you have for buying something with 22" wheels that weighs the same as a planet?
