Tracking down an electrical drain is a nightmare! Had the alternator done as that's what it was traced to and its returned (although with a longer period to drain) of just 10 days!
Has yours got traffic master as an option? The TM module is known to suddenly start draining the battery for no apparent reason.

Yeah has trafficmaster, may have another look at the FSR though, although diagnosed as ok by the garage when they did the alternator (when taking it off) the interior fan has now developed the power of an 80 year old asthmatic, even at the highest power setting, related?

That and the PDC system that has now gone on the blink also.....

Thanks on the trafficmaster point though, hadn't considered that, was thinking phone module as my second point of call....think i need a multimeter

I'm sure yours will be ok!

I've jumped it and managed to bring it over to the flat, worst case my gf has to run me to the station in the morning if it doesn't start (she'll love me when i leave at 5:30!) got the jump leads with me for when it next goes!

Yes almost certainly, the final stage resistor is most likely knackered, its a common problem on these and E46s and has been known to drain batteries when the car isn't running too

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Final-Stage-Resistor-FSU...

Have fitted one on an E46 and apart from having to be as supple as a russian ballet dancer to get your head into a position where you could see what you're doing its not a bad job

I'm glad I'm not the only one who occasionally returns to an E39 with a flat battery. I suspect either the trafficmaster, a dodgy FSU I replaced recently (or didn't do properly), or the telephone that was removed by a previous owner, I've just not had time to really dig into it, multimeter acquired. Excellent guide on how to troubleshoot here from m5board, this is my plan of attack:

http://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e39-m5-e52-z8-dis...

If the PDC is playing up, turn on the ignition, put into reverse, and walk around the car. If you can here the sensor clicking its working, if it's not its dead. You look stupid putting your ear to the bumper but it works. Not so cheap to replace but easily done as long as it's not the centre two in the rear bumper, I had the front two go recently, funnily enough straight after I replaced the FSU.

But I think 1 car is more sensible, the 911 would be a dream come true too.
If you get round to this,I'd be interested in how the 911 compares to the Lotus...

Drove a Z4M at the weekend, and it wasn't special enough. Lotus has rather skewed my idea of what a fun car is and set the bar very high, noise mostly. Z4M was too quiet. It just felt too safe and modern, and well.... dull. Went to a local Porsche specialist and wasn't that impressed either, didn't drive anything, but the sales guy wasn't much older than me, knew full well I'm not buying car imminently and just proceeded to tell me the 996 wasn't a good daily as its too old, a Z4M is st and a Cayman S is what I want because "it's so balanced you can slide it about". I explained I actually really liked the 996, and suddenly it was a great daily and you can get the back-end out on T-Junctions. Didn't like him one bit.

I think the two car garage is where it's at. E36 M3 with a naughty Eisenmann Race exhaust on it and then something 80s and achingly cool for the weekend.... a 635CSi. Could get both for the same money as the Elise and then sell the 540i and have some money to run them both. I want something that I enjoy, isn't an obvious choice and is something I want for me, not impress others.
I would love the two car garage, I am just weighing up whether the garage rental of around £100 per month is sensible.

Agree with the 80's BMW, I am thinking e36 M3 or VX220 for the garaged track and fun car.

Wow I've been terrible at updating this thread.

Nothing really to report except it's been utterly wonderful in the several thousand miles I've done in it. Not a single issue has become apparent. Highlight was my trip to Monaco during the late Summer. 2,000 miles covered without fault, effortlessly quick and comfortable.

The only other thing to report is the time has come to sell it, so if you were one of those people who expressed an interest back in July please do make yourselves known if you are still interested. I'll get a humorous advert up soon.

In the meantime enjoy these photos from the truly stunning road trip down France to Grenoble, over the Route Napoleon to Monaco and back again. I will eventually cobble together some Go Pro footage from the Route Napoleon, but here are some photos from the other parts of the trip...
