I liked Dave. You could just tell he was a car bloke.
As well as telling me about his off-roadimg adventures in his Jeep Cherokee he also allowed me use of the service department's lift to check out his latest trade in.

What year is it? I only ask as it might be wearing a period-appropriate UK plate!

I'm really enjoying this thread; thank you!

Edited to add - 1993 model year, 1992 build.

I'm not a big fan of white car's.
It suits some better than others.
911's, an early 996 Carrera 2 looks pretty good, Marks 1 & 2 Golf GTi, 205GTi etc.

968? Not so much.

The right rims help.
Really should have held on to my 17" Cup 1's.
How was I too know?

Rear light clusters nice.

It's a numbers game.
38% of the dollars liberated from the 964 gets me 90% of the performance.
From only 66% of the cylinders.
But a 100% better blue cockpit.

Or as one veteran Porsche Club guy told me:
"Ya' know there's more to Porsche than just ASS DRAGGERS"

Well quite.

Virgin interior.
Rare for an 18 years old Jersey Girl.

Little known 968 fact.
Things a bit slow at Porsche A.G in the early 90's.
968 built on the same Zuffenhausen production line as the 911.
Seems to show imt fit unt finish.

Cheers, Whatty.

Edit for links wot broke.

Most 911's, an early 996 Carrera 2 for example looks pretty good. VW Golf GTis, a Peugeot 205GTi and Beemers of a E30 or E36 persuasion clad in bridal white look rather yummy.

968? Not so much.

968 fact.
3.0 litre engine.
2nd largest 4 cylinder engine ever produced.
Not sure what was No.1

Variocam unit produced 236 bhp when new.
Felt like they were all still there.
Happy days.

And so for 3 happy months the 968 and I commuted back and forth through another hot and humid NJ summer.
Zero issues, AC freezing, 50/50 weight distribution a delight. 6 speed entertaining.
Even the white grew on me.

Inspired by a half dozen build threads on PH, Rennlist and Pelican a plan was hatched for the 2011/12 winter in anticipation of the 2012 AX season.
A budget Club Sportsterini kind of a thing.
Lighten everywhere, more supportive seats, 17" sticky tires.
A build to call my own!

Well that was the plan.
Until something else white in colour hove into view on August 28th 2011.
Meet Irene.
Or to be accurate, Hurricane Irene.
Or to be super accurate tropical Storm Irene.

Readers only interested in material purely car related now scroll down.
Quite a long way.
F-car car stuff forthcoming.

Cheers, Whatty.

Quick Central New Jersey geology lesson.
Lot of swamp land.
Heavy clay means high water table.
Doesn't drain well.

Spring 2007.
Our street near river.
Picture below not unusual.

Much like the ML320 (pictured above - top left) annoying.
Nothing really to worry about.
Our house at same height as grey house (pictured above - top right)

By the numbers.

Our street in designated flood zone.
Official flood zone height 68 feet Above Sea Level
Our house ground floor 72 feet A.S.L

So 4 feet above flood water level.

Basement/House foundation - 61 feet A.S.L
7 feet below ground.

Floor slopes.
Sump well at lowest point, designed to fill with external subsurface water.
Sump pump sends water up and out via hose to garden.
Works well, most houses basements have them.

Sunday August 28th.
10.00am
Monsoon continues. Bloody windy.
Ms. Whatty on phone. Reassure her that water level not too high.
Ummmm.....

11:00am
Recorded message on phone from Police Department.
Mandatory evacuation. I think not.

Midday.
Basement. Water rushing in above storm bulkhead door.
Think Titanic interior scenes without DiCaprio & Winslet.
Electricity goes off, lights go out. fk this.
All hands abandon basement.

Ms. Whatty on phone.
Can't get home. Trains planes and car rentals cancelled.
Neighbour's to left of SAAB owner.?
Not good.

Dogs barking frantically, sirens blaring.
Take as much stuff and dogs up to second floor.
Knackered. Feeling a bit helpless.
And marooned. Goldfish mysteriously missing from pond.

Mid afternoon.

Rain stops. Wind drops.
Thank fk.
Garage side door indicates tide now going out.

Back deck indicates high water mark.
Close call. Top step level with living area.
Excuse masking tape. Protecting wall siding from teak oil on decking.

Late afternoon.
Sun comes out. Elderly neighbour OK.
Nice day.
But for the 4 feet of water outside front door.

Heavy smell of gasoline in the air.
Water rainbowed with oil.
Sirens continue.
Royally pissed off.

Many thanks for reading, Whatty.

Cubic capacity in U.S gallons?

Not sure.
Too busy locating generator and industrial size pump.
Ms. Whatty now en route from Boston by air.

Take rare day off from work.
Basement pumped dry.
Aftermath.

It's the thought that counts.

What? No chocolate, socks or smokes?
Charity people take note: 2 piece broom/mop handle fking useless.

We were lucky.
Just a load of hard work.
Already a veteran of a house fire Ms. Whatty excels at demolition.
And she can weld.

Life sucks but nobody hurt or worse,

Our neighbours opposite.
Lost everything and their home for 2 1/2 years.

Note house level behind Audi.

House today.
Jacked up 8 feet.
Welcome home R & V.

Last words on this.
This was a made made event caused by over development of natural wetlands and planning incompetence.

2014 UK Flood victims you have my sympathy.

Autumn 2011.

Cost of flood damage depressing, puts a huge dent in 'Fun Stuff Budget'
Quick trip back to UK for family event.
Quick 'quick' drive round country lanes brings on itchy car key syndrome.

Jet lag and itchy car key syndrome make for ill advised flood retail therapy.

Fiat... back in the USA for 2012 model year.
Woohoo...bounce

I like small cars.
See page 1.

I like Italian cars.

United Kingdom 1999
1997 Fiat Barchetta
The great 'little boat'.
130bhp adequate.
Still got the shades.

I like green cars.
So does Ms. Whatty.

August 2014.

Postpeople. Start your engines.
United States Postal Service vans.
Right hand drive means ease of access to kerbside mailboxes.
Design by Postman Pat.
Note dodgem car bumpers.

Note the not very secure parking lot.

October 2011.

Better to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow.
Not sure who coined the phrase.

Very applicable to new North American market Fiat 500 “Sport” model.
1.4 engine – 101 bhp. 6 speed slush-o-matic.
Momentum motoring.
Keep foot flat down at all times.

Chassis well tuned for st NJ roads.
Rolls a lot but sticks well if you can find a bend.
Won’t lift a rear wheel no matter how hard I try.

Fiat Flashback
UK – 2001

Fed up with getting out of Barchetta’s LHD seat to get ticket at car park barrier.
Trade for nearly new Mk 2 Punto Sporting
A mere 80 bhp 1200cc with 6 speed manual.
Perfect B road daily commuter. Thrash without mercy for two years.
Emigrate. Sell to sister. She repeats above.

Library pic.

Winter 2011/12

U.S Economy still in slump.
10 million Americans now unemployed.
Major competitor goes bust. 250 jobs lost.
Short term optimism mixed with anxiety over long term career future.

Decide to realize equity in 968.
Sell long distance to very nice man from Nebraska.
A present to himself for 3 years sobriety.
Rare feel good moment.

U.S Abarth still 12 months away.
500 Sport – Amusing novelty item in NJ.
1.4 lump loosening up nicely.

Well equipped.
Climate control – essential.
Heated seats – very desirable in -3c winters.
Electric sunroof – robs headroom.
Bluetooth - handy when stuck in traffic again and again etc.
Bose Satellite radio with porno function*

  • Not sure if Europe is doing Satellite radio?
Fiat came with 6 months free subscription to Sirius Satellite Radio.
300 stations with crystal clear reception.
A welcome change from NJ/NY commercial crammed radio.
Featuring:
BBC World Service – Wow, I’d forgotten there was an outside world.
Car Guys Radio - All you want to know about aftermarket cup-holders and in-car canine restraint.
Playboy & Spice Adult Radio – liven up your commute home listening to ‘live models’ helping ‘Bud, truck driver calling from Arkansas’ get his jolly’s.

December 2011.

Bud from Arkansas isn’t the only one in need of relief.
I’m getting an odd sensation in my arms and pins’n’needles in my hands.
Assume poor posture at office desk. Buy back support thingy. Symptoms persist.

Note Fiat 500 LHD centre console and gear selector.
My 6’ 2” height coupled with straight arms and bent right leg obstructed by console.
fk me my car is giving me R.S.I.

January 2012.

Lease in haste, repent at leisure. 36 month cheap lease deal.
Can’t 'sell' Fiat but another 33 months will cripple me physically.

Latin American colleague falls on hard times.
Car repossessed. No car = no work = no health insurance + 3 kids to feed.
Nice guy but his English is not great. Volunteer to help him buy a ‘beater’ car.

Make a few calls. Bingo!

1 owner 2000 SAAB 9-5 V6 130k miles with timing belt good to 160k miles.
Take a look, all good bar a cracked windshield.

Comfortable, very very comfortable. Cheapish by NJ standards at $2500.00
Negotiate for new windshield to be fitted.
Source another car for colleague. Stick Fiat in garage, worry about it in the Spring.

200 bhp GM sourced V6, no sludge issues like 4 cylinder models, reliable 4 speed transmission better than later 5 speed.

Novelty wood and leather interior.
Seats... Oh the seats....
Relief from pain. An automotive revelation.
Finally the perfect Jersey car.

Cheers Whatty.

Winter/ Spring 2012

SAAB Econo-motoring. This is great.
Halved my laughably expensive insurance costs.
Fuel consumption acceptable at 22.5 mpg
Any worries about 100K plus mileage dismissed.
Sports Coupes? Pah! This is the (very comfortable) life.

Summer 2012.

Fiat still lurking in garage. Disposal needed.
Arson idea quickly dismissed. Might need garage for future project.
Early lease payoff not really viable. ‘Sell’ leased car?
Suitable credit-worthy candidate found.
Suzi in Brooklyn happy. Finance company happy.
Whatty fking delighted.

Celebrate by detailing 9-5, its now part of the family.
Handsome looks and discreet turbo whooosh.. Good times.

Time for another Autocross project.
Ms.Whatty presents seating ideas.
