Ha - close enough as to make no difference!

Costs so far are £100 for paint and, the best bit given the cost of insurance back in the day...£119 for a years fully comp on a classic policy.

Planning to keep costs to a minimum - my TVR Tamora is usually quite capable of costing money without even turning a wheel!

Plan was for a toy to tinker with and improve over the winter as there isn't much left to do on the Tamora (he says grabbing the largest piece of wood he can find). So far so good!

That's lovely, I still miss the 1.6 that I owned in 1996 should never have sold that one.

I also reckon it'll be worth a lot more if you hang on to it for a while. I had one of these and a 309 GTI back in the 90's. I'd like another 309 but trying to find a good one is hard enough, and the good ones out there are starting to rocket in value.

When I was an apprentice my boss had a 205GTi 1.6, which was nice enough, but it was replaced with a black 309GTi which I thought was the dogs bks! I know the general consensus is that the 309 doesn't look as good as the 205 but it drove bloody well!

I didn't really buy the 205 to make money but it would be nice if it did - even a little!

My Tamora 'owes' me more than its worth - more than I'm prepared to sit down and work out anyway!...so I know the score on that front.

Hope you find a decent 309GTi...isn't there a Goodwood special edition...in Green?

Yep, there's one in my garage...

Great looking 205, you've done well to find a shiny red one, many have dulled with age. The 205s/309s certainly seem to be an appreciating classic. I'm still surprised at the enthusiasm out there for my Goodwood!

I HAD a 1.6 gti and now I have a 1.9 with a gti6 engine on 1.9 box plus a Cossie powered t16 204 4x4 and I still remember the 1.6 as the best, maybe rose tinted glasses but I think it is the close / short ratio box and revive little engine, mine was a 115bhp and in very fine fettle. I am planning on dropping the final drive on the 1.9 to match the 1.6 as it doesn't go on motor ways and I am reliably informed that the actual ratios / box are the same, it is only the final drive....will chuck in an LSD just for good measure.

my dad was a service manager for the local peugeot dealer when these were new, he had a variety of 1.6 and 1.9 205 gti's and then a 309 gti as demos for a couple of years. He actually preferred the 1.6 gti rather than the 1.9 as he felt the 1.9 engine overwhelmed the car. Having said that he always tried to get the keys to the 309 if there was a choice. I had a 1.6 gti for a long time and loved it.
Its always good to see a good example of these cars, brings back good memories.

Looks spot on that, lovely.

Non-sunroof too.....even better.

I miss my old one, a lot. Bloody great car. Proudest moment was a dude with a (then brand new)E46 M3 CSL coming over for a chat about the 205. He loved it, and although rolling around in something a lot more exquisite, he could appreciate a nice standard 205 GTI.

Excellent little cars - echo the comments earlier when someone said only french car they would own - pretty much same for me

Congrats on keeping it up to scratch

I'd want a sunroof in mine - the air/vac seal arrangement I thought was very clever and I never had any leaks

The 205 GTI is such a pretty car. To me, they are by far the most interesting and desirable hot hatch. I also like the 309 GTI.

It isn’t why people buy them, but I think both will gain value considerably. I believe this is particularly true for the 205 GTI.

Lovely. F-reg 1989 are the best. Needs orange indicators though.

I've just been out in my 1.6. Never ceases to make me smile.

Mine has a sunroof which I quite enjoy. I understand the reasons for not having one but as mine is pretty much exclusively a summer car I like to be able to open it up whenever possible and with the windows down too just let the air blast around.

Lovely looking car Pete!!

Nostalgia must be rife, I bought a 1.9gti exactly a week ago and love it! Fortunately, it's got a history file to choke a horse, including original bill of sale. 108k miles but runs lovely. No rust either but does need a bit of fettling for sure. Parts are worse to obtain than my ur quattro!!!

Car looks great Nors - unusually, they seem to suit all colours?

Let me know any contacts re specialists / spares please - whilst I dont need anything major there are one or two bits i need to source too.

Head on to the 205gtidrivers forum as a useful resource for sourcing stuff. And general advice. Some parts are very difficult to source, but most things are plentiful and reasonably priced. Just don't try to find mudflaps or gearknobs!

Or the red bumper trim.

Or aircon parts.

Or working coin trays...etc.
