Have taken some more pics of day 7.

The car has now been painted.

Look at that bonnet!

What was it that 'Ecsy' said about the 'amateur' job done by the body shop guys?...

They are going to paint all the ancillary parts tomorrow - bumpers, mirror covers, spoiler, side-skirts, the replacement slam panel, etc...

If I can 'sneak-off' work again tomorrow, I will try to get some more pics...

The car then has to go through four hours of 'polishing' the lacquer to make it like glass. Amateur job indeed!

Then they will spend another day putting all back together, also ensuring that everything they originally stripped off still works...

Gonna be scarred to drive it home - in case some 'school-run-mum' slams into the back of me at the lights, while arguing with her child...

Also, you wondered why they'd glass fibered over the arches, here's a theory. Their welds looked st, big blobs on top, looks like not much penetration. When you grind them back up they'll probably be piss weak which is probably why all that st was plastered over them. I'd be able to weld them up and grind them back so all they need were a slight skim of filler, not all that crap layered on.
Like I said, amateur hour.
The 'blob welds' were initially used to tack them into place. They were then ground-back and then contiguously welded along the seems to complete the repair...

Now go away and spoil someone else's project!

As an aside...

Take a look at this 'dirty beast' that I spotted on my way back from the body shop today...

Looks VERY naughty...

Me too!

The prices that I quoted earlier in this thread, were from a mate that prepares Scooby's for rallying...

Mr or Mrs LanceRS - I prefer mine too... Just know that this person has a very naughty, if not rough, Beemer...

Don't think I'll be bothering to challenge him at the lights - even after my engine update...

£300 for fitting?! £160 for a CAI? That's where you're expense is coming from! The car is so easy to work on, in 3.5 hours I could comfortably take the engine outand put it back in,let alone fitting the inlet manifold!
Do you live anywhere near Bristol, per chance?...

A couple of hours away, if I was closer I'd offer to lend a hand over a weekend to get it done.
Much closer than Norfolk! If I gather all the parts, would you 'genuinely' be interested? I'm a carpenter by trade, and therefore a very practical person... And what about the remap? Don't fancy sleeping in the car though - no matter how much I love it!...

Before you refurb the wheels, check they are genuine, they look very like reps to me!
Lots of weird stuff appeared before your comment... However, I'm sure they're NOT genuine too - no BMW stamps on the back of the wheels...

Another £500 to £700 for a set of the originals???... Not sure if I can be bothered, as most wouldn't have a clue! Just wish I had a pic of the car when new, to have an idea. The original build-spec of the car when new from BMW (above in this thread) doesn't actually give the type - S786A Action pack for 17" wheels.

Not really that much in mileage to be fair, I don't put my exact location onto my profile, I just use my hometown. I'm currently based in Kent.
I couldn't help much with the re-map either to be fair, I pay other people to do the technical things, I just change parts and fit new things. smile

Yea, good call. They're not comfy as I found out one night at Spa last year, never again will I sleep in it.
OK, you're on!

If I provide the manifold and conversion kit - and you could point me in the right direction for the induction kit. I'll come to yours, give you a hand, pay you for your time, sleep in the car - already spent one night in it at the side of the M5 after a blow-out with no spare or road-side assistance... IDIOT!!! - and cook a really mean Sunday lunch to-boot! Would still save me a couple of hundred quid...

He he he... I agree, but by the way it 'sits' and the rough job on the induction kit and exhaust, it looks like the money has been spent on the mechanical side... Who knows, the thing probably has a turbo and nitrous oxide... smile

I'm more than happy to help, based in Southampton and I've changed loads of these now... all for a damn sight less than £300. That is absolutely extortionate.

Remap- you can get generic mapped ECUs for around £165 + delivery from a certain BMW tuner. Mine will be going spare soon...
Sounds interesting... Southampton is a lot closer than Norfolk, and a lot less petrol too! Just have to negotiate that horrible road with all the trucks getting down to you. I have managed to source a manifold and should get my hands on it in the next couple of weeks or so.

Would it be hassle-free to fit your old ECU to my car and get it up and running with no glitches?

If you're expecting top money for this when you sell it, id expect most people to know what they are looking for lol. I mean, it was pretty obvious to me from one picture, the offset/dish is all wrong!! Cant imagine genuines to be anywhere near that amount of money, more £3-400 on ebay/bmwowner, etc.
I hear what you're saying, just that finding - and paying for - a set of genuine motorsport wheels is something that will be further down the list of things I need to get done on the car right now...

After changing the manifold and a remap, the next job will be the rear shocks, then refurbing the driver's seat...

Day 8 at the body shop...

The remaining parts have now been prepped and are ready to go into the spray booth.

It will then take around another day the get it all put back together and make sure that everything is working, before I can collect the car.

Can't wait to finally see the finished article!

Well it's about 100 miles from Bristol to me. Just let me know when you're thinking about it and I'll sort you out- going to warn you now though, quite busy until September finishes- off to Nurburgring on the 18th and got a boxing match to train for on the 28th! So if it's easier, take your time and I'll book you in for early October if you like? I'll be free Sept 29th, Sept 30th, Oct 4th and Oct 5th for starters. Let me know what works for you.

It may be a little while 'til my old ECU is free, but the steps are as follows:

1) split open key, put new EWS chip in
2) remove glovebox (4-6 bolts or so), fit new EWS module (worst part of the job)
3) open ECU compartment in engine bay (passenger side, behind fusebox), pull out old ECU, new one goes in

I reckon it'd take 4 hours max to do the M50 conversion, providing you get the decent pipework kit (I can source one for you at cost price- £65ish). The kit includes the throttle body plate (provides a strong seal between manifold/throttle body), all pipework and jubilee clips. I've used it before, and it's really good. I had to bodge mine originally! The ECU replacement takes about half an hour.

My old ECU will be free once I've got my M3 cams and have sent the car off to be mapped on its old, unadulterated ECU.
4th to 5th of October works for me. If you can source a decent pipework kit, that works for me too. How to take this forward????

You can get real m3 wheels for £300 tops! My mate just sold he's mint set for £300. Reps go for around £150. I just sold mine for that.
Bargain! Will still have to wait a couple of months before I can do anything about replacing them, but has now been added to my list...
