Hello all,

Thought I'd put up a thread about my car, a mk5 shadow blue Golf GTI.

Previous to this I drove a Fiesta Zetec S TDCi, peanuts to run at 50+mpg and £30 tax but as I don't do as much milage any more I was itching for something a bit quicker.
After considering my options of Clios/Focus etc etc I decided on a Mk5 Gti. I've always liked the shape and getting an outing in a friends Edition30 my mind was made up.
I was looking on and off for months until I travelled to North Wales one cold and wet August bank holiday to view this car.

1 owner since new, FVWSH, 58k on the clocks and the colour I wanted! Car itself has little in the way of extra options but it didn't bother me too much. Previous owner has also fitted Koni FSD shocks with the standard springs.
Left a deposit and was counting the days till I was back to pick the car up. As I left the previous owner gave me a huge file with cut outs of the Mk5 GTI press reviews and even his original spec booklet from VW. I could tell he loved the car.

After getting the car on Thursday I've finally gave it a good clean, it scrubs up well. Though I'm ashamed to say I missed a small case of rust on the rear boot badge surround -  headache Will be heading to VW when I get the V5 through..

Anyway here are some pictures of the car, and some of my initial plans below.

First and foremost I want to ensure the engine is fit and healthy. The car is booked into local VW specialists GNJ on Monday to have the cambelt/waterpump etc changed and a full health check, serviced too.

After the engine gets the all clear I'd like to get the cars paintwork up to scratch and get rid of that arch gap.
- Machine polished, even though he loved the car it seems like the previous owner didn't wash it that well.
- Rust removed
- Colour code rear bumper and side skirts.
- 2010 Polo aerial.
- Eibach lowering springs. Not too much of a drop - I live on a road littered with speed bumps..

I'd like to upgrade the interior a little bit, by adding the below.

-GTI seat inlays
-Cruise control retrofit
-Aux input
-RCD 510 (newer headunit from the Mk6)

Cheers

nice keep us updated, I'm shopping for one like this. Interestingly/frustratingly the ones I keep finding are like yours with no the cruise control, no xenon's, basic stereo and no multi function steering wheel. But then I keep thinking do I really need them.

Exactly how I found it. The ones with sensible spec and mileage are overpriced IMO. Coming from a basic Fiesta I'm more than happy with the spec the GTi's have standard - auto lights/wipers, dual zone air con etc. Though don't get me wrong I initially wanted one with every option ticked, I ended up settling for a car which has been looked after. I've looked at some which had 7-9 owners which didn't sit right with me.

Cruise is an easy enough retrofit, around £140 fitted or it can be done yourself for parts cost.

The stereos aren't the best in any form I found, best to upgrade this to the one from the MK6, around £150 for the unit and can be fitted yourself.

I've just sold mine which was a 5 door 07 plate in the same colour. Great cars. Enjoy.

We have a Mk5 GTI in black - I think the first owner really went to town on the options list. Sunroof, sat nav, cruise control, xenons, multi function wheel, heated seats and cream leather.

It's been a cracking car, approaching 100k now. Does everything well, perhaps too well at times. You can hoon, cruise, and do all the family stuff, and it still looks good.

Yours looks great, enjoy!

Looks great that, great spec too - rare to have the cream leather?

Well the garage rang and it's going to be tomorrow when I get the car back, no bother rather a job is done properly and all that. He mentioned it was pretty straight mechanically and clean, chuffed with that! biggrin

Can't wait to get it back tomorrow and be able to drive it without the niggling fear of the cambelt destroying the engine!

I don't believe cruise was available as an option new but it was only £122 to retrofit it to mine, money well spent. I have xenons and the multi function steering wheel as well as heated seats & mirrors so well equipped cars are out there.

Will you look to get a remap? It's is the most powerful car we've owned, and I don't drive it too much, so it still feels fast to me!

Possibly when I get used to the power in standard guise. As I said coming from a 90bhp diesel it feels like a rocket ship to me. Possibly look at going to stage 1 and making it sound a bit better - take out the precat?

I've had mine from new. Now on 91000 miles, and I've yet to find a car that I want to replace it with!

Mine is 5 door (bought before the kids had grown up and left home), 17" wheels (refurbished in black chrome), tartan cloth, DSG, multi-function wheel with paddle shift and cruise control (fitted as standard..)

Mods - none - doesn't need any.

Full VW service history up to 50k, since when it's been looked after by VAG Tech in Milton Keynes.

It's taken us on family skiing holidays to Austria, lapped the 'Ring (4 laps, 4 up) and enjoyed two track days (Bedford and Goodwood)

The headlamps are starting to fog/craze and even a 3M Refurb kit only slightly improved them, and the boot badge has got chrome worm. Other than that, it still looks as good as the day I bought it!

Looks good that, those alloys look well. Tempted to get them refurbed on mine at some point - not sure if it will suit a darker colour or not?

Should be picking it up around lunch today.. can't wait!

Agreed on the alloy refurb, great colour. May look to get ours doen, the missus has kerbed all but one very badly, and it annoys the hell out of me everytime I clean it!

Got the car back from GNJ. If anyones in the North West and looking for a garage then check these guys out - http://www.gnjmotorsport.com/

Said it was a very straight car. Clean and how it should be - doesn't look like it's been messed with.

Just what I wanted to hear!

Really enjoy it. Hopefully get the chance to take it on a good run this weekend.

Power is currently more than enough for me too, though I would possibly like it to sound a little bit better!

I like that. I fancy one of these as a daily driver alongside my MR2.

Thanks chaps. Loving it so far.

Think it will definitely be going a little lower - just reduce the arch gap.

Will also be adding cruise and the mk6 headunit.

Other than that I'm in two minds about colour coding. The black plastic sills and bumpers seems to 'split up' the car some how.

I wouldn't mind the car to be a little better noise when giving it some stick - not sure if a full exhaust would be the way to go?

Yes I am a child, loud noises sound cool to me wink

Cheers chaps.

Got over to a friends Sunday morning to fit the aux lead, cheers bud, doesn't work 100% but cba stripping the dash down to troubleshoot. Will wait till I upgrade the unit.

Managed to clean the car again over the weekend. Not machine polished but it's come up well. Got a price to get the rust sorted, going to try VW next see if I get any joy with them.

Other than that loving the car, managed 43mpg the other day when cruising along. General average is about 32mpg.
