I was. I've now bought a cheap runabout - dual purpose as teenager step lad has his eyes on it.

I've been speaking to garages all the way through. It's now back at the gearbox place and everyone seems finally to be agreed that it's likely to be the valve body. Final diagnosis due on Monday.

I don't really blame the trader - he wanted someone to say it's definitely this before forking out £1,500. No one to date has.

Well........ I'm not sure. I think so, but need more miles as the gearbox self adjusts for a little while.

If it's not it means it's not the gearbox and I'll sort it myself with someone with half a brain rather the pea brains that the traders been using.

Turned out not to be completely fixed. I've replaced the MAF today and it's a lot better.... I do wonder if this is all it needed all along....

I think you're insane to have persevered with this car for so long.

The dealer should never have sold the car with the fault.

Agreed, I'd have started steps to sack it off way before now.. but if it's fixed and you're happy that's the main thing. It looks great and the 320CDi seem to cut along quite nicely while returning respectable MPG as well.

What happened with the gearbox in the end?

They replaced the valve body, but it never really felt right.
