This is a late Eclat, with the 2.2 litre Lotus 912 engine, two Dellorto 45s, Getrag five speed gearbox, power steering and a galvanised chassis, but still with inboard rear drum brakes (discs on the front). The JPS paint scheme and decals are original, and the car is overall in reasonable nick. It feels fast and lively on the road, and handles like, well, a Lotus!

Very nice, looks completely unmolested and in one of the all time great colour schemes too - good find!

Having owned an original Elan S4 DHC for about 12 years, I am a bit biased, but I was never a great fan of this era of Lotus...however, a pal of mine did have a late model Excel SE in red, and I really liked that car!

I was asked to drive it all the way from Newcastle to Sheffield in a house move, and that changed my opinion of them.

If I recall correctly, his had about 170BHP, and it seemed to have some sort of 'aero effect' as it sat better at higher speeds (!) on the motorway. It is a few years ago, but once over 80 leptons it sat down a bit lower on the springs, or so it seemed !

The 80's Lotuses were often underrated cars by many, but once driven you realise just how good they were.

Yours is a nice original example, and I would imagine it is quite rare now?

Never heard of them! Looks fugly, in a charming sort of way. Was it an attempt to make a sort of 2+2 Esprit?

The Esprit replaced the Europa. The Elite (hatchback wedge, four seats) and Eclat (same car, fastback two plus two) replaced the Elan Plus Two. The Eclat developed into the Excel. The 2 litre 907 engine developed into the 2.2 litre 912, turbocharged in some Esprits.

Nice one G!
Of course you have got me eyeing up broken Esprit projects on ebay again, but will have to get the SAAB sorted first

For what it's worth, I think that's lovely.

The boyfriend of a girl I worked with 20 odd years ago, had exactly the same model. It felt properly rapid at the time.

He did tell me where the rear lights were sourced from - upside down mk2 Granada, or something like that?

Always loved these since family friend/child minder owned a red one in around 1981. Used to look forward to parents going out on a Saturday night because she and the car would be coming over!..

Quality bit of tat as said above thumbup

This picture had me chuckling though. What a total and utter disaster area wink I honestly think I could design and build a better looking console and I've got 10 thumbs and a hammer!

The Dellortos are playing up a bit, probably from lack of use. I might get them refurbed. I also think I'll fit a new starter motor as the current one is prone to sticking.

The mixed bag of Ho Flung Dung tyres have now been replaced by new Falkens all round.

Falkens are a good choice, ran them on my 944T and XK8, was torn between them and Toyos on the Slab, but went for Toyos as I know they have worked well on the 9 3 in the past
