Update Time smile

So today I went on a marathon trek up to the Lake District with the barge. Leaving at 5AM meant a clear run up to Manchester with little traffic. It was actually a fantastic run up with me being able to average some decent speeds.

Anyway - the reason for the trip......

Car has gone to have open heart surgery. The engine is being removed, stripped, honed and then fitted with forged internals. It's also having a big turbo fitted along with host of other goodies;

Wiseco Pistons
Manley Rods
ARP bolts
New OEM bearings/casings etc.
BNRS4 Turbo
Downpipe
Jetex Exhaust
3.5" intake
Forge Bypass Valve
Twin Oil catch cans
Bilstein B12 sports suspension
Uprated rear diff mounts
Uprated transfer box bearing caps
Fidanza flywheel
LUK clutch
EGR delete
Balance shaft removal and sump baffaling
Water/Methanol injection
+some bits I've probably forgotten!

Net result should be a pretty sorted car with roughly 400bhp/400ftlb without meth. Running meth as an additional fuel source should mean it will see 500ish, however I'm not keen on this option due to the potential for catastrophic damage should it fail! Instead I will be using it to mainly reduce BAT's and help clean the intake which is notorious for coming up due to direct injection.

Can't wait to get it back now!

sounds like its taken a while to book it in, from May till now !! It should be pretty built-proof when you get it back, shouldn't it ?

I would ask for pictures, but I'm guessing externally nothing has changed and we are hardly going to see a big different under the bonnet, are we.

Yea it has - between me getting some scope creep and the garage being extremely busy doing MPS rebuilds (lol) it's taken a while.

The one positive is it means I am getting everything I want doing done at once.

Will post a pic of the parts etc and any pics I get of the build in progress but nothing should look mega different from the outside. Main one will be a slight lowering (20mm ish) from the bilstein kit

Regarding being bullet proof - sercretly im really hoping so but iat the end of the day it's a 2.3 that's going to be putting out not far off 200hp/litre. I will be reducing the service intervals a lot and I think I've got all the weak points covered but you never know!

Sounds pretty decent. Should be a very capable car with that power!

Also ordering a 3" Jetex exhaust which shouldn't be too much louder than stock (I don't like stupid droney/noisy exhausts on a daily driver).
Have to say been really happy with the Jetex in our MPS, it's a tiny touch louder than original at idle but not offensively so but a bit nicer on full chat (still not offensive though).
It properly fills the bumper holes too, getting rid of the tiny originals behind stupid little trims.

Update ahoy!

Picked the car up on the 25th October. Initial impressions are great - the suspension has really sharpened the car up without ruining the ride - in fact its actually better. This is probably helped by the fact I didn't go for some stupid lowering kit or similar, it a modest 20mm drop.

The Jetex exhaust has a lovely tone at Idle and when off boost, it doesn't drone and is not that much louder than standard. Im limited to 3500rpm for the run in period but it really starts to sound amazing at around 3k rpm as the turbo begins to make some meaningful boost.

The balance shaft delete and single mass flywheel have made the engine much more responsive and luckily added very little in the way of vibrations, the slightly softer engine mount has probably masked some of this though.

Power - I really cant give much of an opinion on yet due to the running in (3500rpm and around 50% throttle). The uprated by-pass valve makes some lovely "blow-off" noises and the new intake sounds great though. Its also had its first map revision applied. Due to the increase in intake diameter and change of MAP sensor it had a safe map on to get me home. Took some logs so we could get these fundamentals sorted before running in is complete and we start looking at the serious adjustments

It's been on running in oil until Sunday when I reached the 750 mile mark. I was advised to then swap the mineral running in oil for some semi-synth, before going fully synth at 1k whereby the running in is complete.

Niggles/Jobs to do -

the jetex exhaust is rubbing slightly on the rear bumper (it replaces the stock exhaust chrome surrounds with real tips that sit through the same holes). This is as it is a new exhaust and the heat cycles make it constantly go out of alignment. It should settle down after two months or so - its just a pain adjusting it in the meantime.

The intake is rubbing very slightly on the new battery (battery is half size due to size of intake) will have a fiddle and and see if it can be moved slightly, if not I will attach a bit of plate or something to the corner where its rubbing

Unfortunately the refurbished A/C compressor I fitted before needs some attention. One of the banjo's holding the line in is not seating correctly, so I will be removing it and retapping the thread this weekend

Fit the step colder spark plugs when I do the 1k oil change. I was advised against fitting these straight out as for running in you want the slightly hotter temperature of standard plugs, plus the running in process can sometimes foul the plugs, so its best practice to swap out after anyways.

Meth injection kit is not fitted yet - I urgently needed the car back so was willing to forego that at this point. Its currently in my shed ready to go if I do decide to go down that route. I must admit to be hesitant about it in the first place though.

Will add another update after the running in is complete and I begin the mapping process

Update - compressor is fixed and so are the other niggly bits smile

About half way through the mapping process and it's already a fair bit quicker. Using a crude 4th gear log and comparing it to one taken on the same road when the car was running just an intake and map it's showing as just over 100hp up smile

Assuming the car with the tune and Intake only made standard power (260hp) it's currently putting out around 360.

Hoping to hit 400 when done on unleaded and if I fit the meth injection it will add an easy 20-30 safely (not relying on it as a fuel source).

It certainly surprised a Megane RS 265 the other night.

Interested to see your 60-100 in 4th.My old mk2 (BNR3) was doing it <6secs although that was deemed slow even with 24psi !

Funny you should mention it - took some videos the other day. Using 3rd/4th it comes in just under 6. Using 4th only it's just over at 6.2ish. 3's are obviously at a big advantage when rolling due to the lower weight and lower drivetrain losses.

Should see the times above improve a tad as we wind more boost in but I'm not expecting them to be drastically different.
Will aim to upload the vids to YouTube

I remember being on a duel carriageway local to me and a C63 AMG was tearing ar53 about the place by a young lad.

I was following their direction and eventually we came up to a set of traffics lights ahead where there was one of these. The lights had changed green before the Mazda and other traffic came to a stop so they were all still rolling.

The Merc had got just behind the Mazda when he absolutely gunned it. The guy in the C63 seemed gobsmacked and really struggled to keep up. I think the MPS eventually turned left not long after.

About time I updated this again.

Car is still looking pretty standard besides this little badge here;

I think it's pretty subtle.

It's settling in nicely now - had a few issues though frown first being the new LUK clutch and Fidanza flywheel - it would start slipping after some hard use or when hot after a longer motorway drive. It's now been swapped out for a spec Clutch. Rated to 600ft/lb's so has plenty in reserve. It was pricey but one of the only options that retains stock pedal feel and daily drive ability while coping with the power.

Other issue was the brakes - the Mintex pads I had fitted last time I changed them were never amazing, but with the extra speed they just wern't coping on a spirited drive. Swapped them out for Stoptech's and all has been grand.

Interior wise I found a motorised dash hood from an MPS with Satnav, ripped out the standard screen and hard wired a nexus tablet and charger into it. Result is it looks like a factory unit (hood opens/closes with ignition etc & the nexus 7screen is exactly the size of the standard screen) but has Google Maps, Spotify integration etc.

Driving wise - very happy with the extra power, it's really bought the chassis to life. Currently I'm not interested in chasing anymore as it's then a slippery slope and love the balance between go/handling/stop at the moment - don't want to go down the route of a drag queen.

It still performs daily duties valiantly, recently taking all 4 of us on a weeks break through France. Happily sits at Autoroute speeds all day long with plenty available to nip past the odd dawdler. It's louder than stock but still pretty quiet and not droney so the kids are happy in the back smile

Will aim to take a 0-60 vid from both inside and outside the car shortly, mainly as I want to gauge the 0-60 and also because I want to see what t looks like when it does launch!

I always liked these, really discreet but very capable. I didn't realise they had so much tuning potential.
Great thread and good work!
