so before the GT3 I had a silver grey m3 CSL. great car, second one but I always had the GT3 itch to scratch and glad I done it.

bought the car back in June this year and spec:

996 MK2 GT3 in Guards Red
03 Plate 69k miles
RS front bumper with vents
RS carbon rear spoiler with the ram air ducts
RS 29 pads all round
sports exhaust
Porsche bucket seats with Shroth harnesses
Porsche half cage in rear
Porsche and Porsche indy history
all shocks rebuilt by Bilstein in 2013 with new H&R springs

previous owner had removed the silencers which was not very sociable and it lacked low down torque/pick up.

Steve at Viper Exhausts in Essex is a real genius with exhaust metals and bends. used to work in an F1 team making their exhausts. top grade 304 stainless steel rear boxes and 2mm steel thick piping at right bore.

end result is LOADS quieter and it drives so much better now. actually has some back pressure at low revs and torque. still a sport sound but very liveable.

much better pick up and has that GT3 sound back. still sounds nice. very happy and very good pricing. about one third what it would have cost to do OEM stuff!! Porsche wanted £950 plus VAT for the OEM rear silencer and you need two. oh yes plus the brackets that hold the boxes....they are £250 each plus VAT sir. Perfect.

wheels needed a refurb so off to lepsons which is about 15 mins drive from home. old wheels had some odd gold flakey finish which was nice but any sort of issues then how do you match the paint.
back to gloss black!

was never a fan of the leather wheel and the totally black interior so recently done some changes in October 2014.

old wheel:

sent off to Jack at Royal steering wheels in Aylesbury who re done the steering wheel and gear lever in 9002 dark grey alcantara with matching red stitching. put a red band at 12 oclock too. man is a genius and done a great job for the money!!

and finally to today....

centre console and seat eyelets for the harnesses done in guards red. really pleased with the outcome and really brings out the changed wheels and gear lever with the red stitching.

have also changed the tyre to some semi slicks which have helped a lot.

the other piece was changing the ARB settings around. was on full hard setting so very harsh on the road. went down 2 on the front and 1 on the rear. feels easier on the road and less crashy. handy if u get caught in the wet too.

Stunning car. One of my all time favourites. I think this car stepped up the game for these road going 'race car'

Just because im in the fabrication industry, im not feeling the quality of the exhaust. I would expect someone who worked on f1 cars to be TIG welding tbh. Its fit for purpose though and I probably wouldnt of commented on it if you didnt make a feature of it. 304 is one of the lowest grades of stainless also. But as said Im probably being a .

Sorry I couldnt help myself. I think its abit of jealiousy deep down frown

Have fun with it.

Being a coded welder, I was also going to comment on the exhaust.. I'm happy that the owner sees value for money and it's had the desired effect. But also thought that the quality was actually quite poor and that's certainly not powered by jealousy, just my anal attention to detail when it comes to welding. getmecoat

Stunning car though, the exhaust could have been stuck together with tiger seal and I'd still be proud of owning that!! laugh

Cheers,
Grant

gents I have no idea what you are on about ;-)

all I know is that I had bought a car that was about 110 db on tickover, totally unsociable, unimpressed wife and neighbours, ran lumpy, drove like scheit around town and just not good.

OEM GT3 exhausts are like rocking horse poop and a small mortgage from Porsche.

Viper got me out of a hole, it looks fine from behind, sounds a millions times better, drives and smells like it should so that was fine for me. still has a sporty sound too.

I just get in it, drive it, clean it but have feck all mechanical idea. its a stainless steel exhaust to me ;-)

love driving it and may see some folks at sunday service at Silverstone.

Don't get hung up about the welding. My car went to a highly reputable exhaust fabricator and the welding makes yours look amazing! I can't believe these guys get so much good feedback.

Stunning car and although the CSL was good the GT3 must be more of an event.

CSL was a great car james and still love the sound of them/the way they drive/the balance.

on track you could really take liberties with the CSL and even mid corner...the GT3 is a different animal. take any sort of Berty and it will bite.

every journey is a mission and a great one. don't drive it much to keep it special. gets a lot more attention too being a 911, that wing and the colour.

CSL and GT3 are both epic cars and I feel really lucky to have had both tbh. a CSL on cups on a fast A road is just a smile a mile too.

I think the GT3 just steps it up one more notch. its that engine and the way it just goes and goes.

One more notch? I'd say about the same (the BMW was a third cheaper when new)

The BMW engine also seems to go on and on .. and as an aside you are more likely to see high mileage CSL's than GT3's

One of each, dream garage.

I rang the seller up and asked to view but I was in Germany and couldn't get back in time. So jealous. That seemed a stunning amount of car for the money. Congratulations!

Please do post up more photographs, no matter how trivial.

Mermaid I don't agree with that. I know of a few 100k plus GT3s...bearing in mind they only made 200 for the UK that is not bad going. 422 RHD CSLs in the UK and not many of those are over 100k miles. I had a CSL that had 114k miles on it when I sold it and it was a good high miler. was used on the motorway a lot by previous owner and its still going well with current owner past 120k miles.

but there are a lot of garage queen/low mileage CSLs out there though which people wont drive/investors and some are now having issues. I know of 3 CSLs with sub 60k miles all with top end issues and broken Cams. BMW can't supply the original CSL cams which are more hollow/lighter so some people have had their cars laid up for over a year. not a good advert!

you are going to get good and bad ones with all cars and especially those in low numbers.

the Metzger engine in the GT3/turbo is very different to the normal 3.6 engines in the 996. its heritage goes back to the original Le mans engine from the GT1 race car so its very strong. it has a dry sump for starters and does not suffer the IMS and bore scoring issues of the 3.4/3/6 engines.

so bought one of these:

BMC panel filter

and one of these:

rear air ram duct (helps get more air in)

going to be painted guards red.
idea is to help with breathing a little bit.

going to go all red and keep the RS spoiler come spring. remove the graphics and paint front/rear bumpers.

sth like this (apart from the black roof and black bonnet!):

Looks lovely, although I'm maybe biased as I've got one too. They really are very special cars and depite being a 996 I think the GT3 just looks so purposeful in the metal.

Love the steering wheel re-trim, I've been after the same thing for mine and have contacted Jack at Royal Steering Wheels twice but had no response back frown

I was doing a bit of googling this morning and after seeing more than a handful of people have had mixed results I've actually decided to go elsewhere. A good friend has recommended Trimdeluxe who do alot of custom interior work etc smile
