Nice Cup!

Had one of these a few years ago for 3/4 years, really miss it, they are so much fun. I'd put driver enjoyment on a par with my Caterham.

Just bagged a company car, so really tempted to pick one of these up, they seem great value, and a never to be repeated type car...

It's all down to money.

If the dephaser goes at a later date and the belt comes off, it will need a new belt.
A dephaser is an expensive item to change for no obvious reason though.

It's easy to get carried away and change the water pump too, just in case.

Personally I'd just have the belts done.

My 172 is on it's 3rd belt and original dephaser.

Cross that bridge and all that...

Who's doing your belts?

Nice little read . I would get the pulley changed at the same time as the belts then you know it's sorted . I run a Twingo cup and have just had the belts and pulley changed.

I've never heard of them but that means nothing.

Just make sure that whoever does it has the correct tooling and has done plenty of them and you will be fine.

They are a reputable outfit apparently and know their stuff when it comes to correct tools being used etc.

Had one of these for 4 odd years before I sold it around six years ago. I only sold it because of a few financial difficulties that needed addressing at the time, I didn't want it to go, it was my pride and joy. I reckon I'd still have it today if I wasn't forced to sell it. It's still on the road if anyone knows the whereabouts of it, I'd still have another one.

So it's cambelt is due soon enough.

What do those in the know recommend....? Belts done with or without the dephaser pulley at same time? Does it really make much of a difference having the dephaser done now or at a later date?

It makes no noise to indicate it's on the way out. At least it didn't the last time I drove it...
I'd recommend getting it all changed.

I've had my 182 for about 3 years, with a previous owner changing just the belt and pulleys back in 2012. The waterpump started to fail in Feb this year, so had another belt change plus dephaser and waterpump straight away to prevent a complete failure. Not a massive problem as it was due a change next year anyway, but if yours hasn't had a pump change at least then it must be getting on for 15 years old?

Car looks very clean! Is it fully standard or has it seen some mods? Any mods planned for the future?
However I can't help but ask why you bought one over an E36 328i Sport, it's especially hard for me to understand as I'm absolutely loving them and I'll be in the market for a 328i next summer hopefully lick
Worst car I've owned the E36 328i. Clio cup knocked spots off it.

Hi there

Just got a 172 cup myself and am refreshing the suspension, so new cup dampers, top mounts etc.
Also got new 172 cup springs, but they do sit a little high.

I see you changed to cooksports, how would you rate the ride and handling on the cooksports compared to the standard cup springs?

Still the best car I've ever owned. It will look brand new once those lights are treated.

Great looking car DoubleTime and one that I'm sure will go up in value too. I did my 182's headlights with the 3M kit from Amazon and they came up like new. Took about an hour per side, but I wasn't rushing.

Just to echo DoubleTime's advice, go for it, they're excellent springs and I'm very happy with them. My car is my daily driver and I actually thought the ride was better than the standard cup springs laugh

But then I had a FN2 Civic Type R for a while and thought that was quite compliant getmecoat

I seem to remember thinking the Eibach springs (the lower of the two) improved the ride slightly on mine, that was a while ago now though.

Anthracite turinis do look good on 17/182s!

Miss my 172. No other car after that (incl. MKV GTI, EP3 R) has had the same small car big engine feel. Lives on like this: https://www.instagram.com/p/BjSa7u_BhoB/

They are incredible little cars. I used to own a 182 (the black one on my photo) and at the same time two of my brothers copied me and one ended up with a 182 and another a 172 cup. We decided a roadtrip was a good idea so we spent a few months getting our cars the way we wanted them. I added four Michelins which were just one of the best tyres I have ever had on a car. They gripped in both wet and dry without any fuss. Also added Cooksport springs, new brakes and new shocks.

We headed up from the North East of England towards my hometown of Laurencekirk and then over towards Aviemore, Fort William, Gairloch and then Skye.

Not one of those cars caused a bit of bother apart from bumper coming off for taking the Glen Nevis road a bit quick. Even now we look at the classifieds for them just away to do that now. Enjoy.

Nice to see someone bothering to refresh bushings properly on a car like this.

Usually its a wheel refurb and a polish and suddenly its a minter.

Currently using mine to commute every day, after a year or so of not being used for up to 2wks at a time it's loving it!

Even after nearly 9yrs it still surprises me how bloody quick it feels & it's just SO much fun!

I have owned (& currently own) faster, more expensive cars but I'm not sure I've ever owned a better car.

I still think that the mod to lower the seats where you take out the washers under the seats was one that made a huge difference to me. It went from feeling like I was on top of the car to sitting nicely.

I also got round to changing the dogbone mount and it also made the car even better.
