Hi Andy,
Thanks again, that is really helpful. I just noticed that you didn't sand away the original coating before applying the etch primer etc? Is that right or have I just mis-read? Does the etch primer remove the need to sand down initially, and then you use a normal primer after the etch primer? And then the different grades of sanding on the filler is just to leave it feeling properly smooth?
There are loads of "how to's" on the Internet, but none seem to achieve as good a result as your's!

No idea if I did it correctly but this was my process and it seems to have worked out ok

1. Clean wheels and remove any tar spots etc
2. Lightly sand down entire wheel - used mainly 400 - 800 grade, slightly coarser grade where there were sharp edges / burrs on kerb marks
3. Applied the aluminium filler and left to dry
4. Sanded back filler until happy with finish using whatever grades I felt was required
5. Coat of high build etch primer
6. Sanded back to identify any areas that needed more filler etc

Repeated steps 3-6 as necessary

7. Several coats (2-3 minimum) of top coat
8. Light rubbing back with 2000 - 3000 grade wet and dry
9. 2-3 coats of lacquer
10. Wheels left for 2-3 days before being protected with Migliore wheel sealant

Hope this helps - I found it quite straightforward ONCE i had learned not to rush things. Some people do not recommend flatting back between top coat and lacquer - I have tried both ways and feel it achieves a better finish - worth experimenting

I think the key thing is to make sure you are happy with the smoothness BEFORE lacquer is applied

Now sadly moved on to a new owner but nice to know its gone to a good home where it will be well looked after - genuinely the most comfortable, most reliable car I have ever owned

i've just realised it was this car i saw on ebay, shame you didnt put it up for sale later in the year as i'd have been tempted.

What are you replacing it with?

I had a buyer lined up - Paypal deposit paid, confirmed time of arrival at station, car was immaculate, I was at the station - he never showed up, no response to messages, texts, he reclaimed the money from Paypal, citing car was not as described (despite never seeing it)

Fortunately had no real problem selling it, been bombarded with calls, messages about since I agreed verbally a sale to the new owner

Was being replaced with a friends Maserati 3200GT but it ate its gearbox yesterday so that has fallen through, decided to go off at a tangent and bought something with a much lower risk factor than the Maserati and therefore picking up a MK1 Audi TT V6 coupe on Saturday - always admired the design and I'm very comfortable with VAG products and their faults / potential for improving etc
