Nice car OP. I'm a big fan of these - it might well be my next step from my 2.0 turbo Astra. It'd be nice to step up to a nice six cylinder and rear drive

Hi, Yes, had a couple of enquiries but nothing concrete so I am still enjoying it! My company have been pushing me to move to something else, looked at the 140, i3 and 320d, none of which really hit the same spot, not to mention the tax on the 140 is a little bit daft for what it is!

The suspension seems to be a little less harsh (sub 50mph) than it was, perhaps I am just getting used to it more? Driving the Griffith at the weekend reminded me just how far things have advanced in the world of technology. A 300HP Rover V8 bolted into a rudimentary chassis is a wonderful thing, refined it is not!
Amusingly, a similar experience between Focus ST and Griffith this weekend too.

Regularly drive mine just before/after an Exige V6 or 182 Trophy - never disappointed by the 130i, even after those two well regarded but very different 'drivers cars'.
Kinda sits nicely in the middle ground between, and at the same time compliments them both.

Are you still selling this? I think I really need to scratch the 130i itch before there are no decent ones left!

Off topic but I need someone who knows the Griff to drive mine and tell me what it's like?

That's some collection! Serious question how do you rate the 130 chassis after the Lotus? I know standard they're a handful and after the M3 tbh, it just felt broken! Now though with some tweaks it's great, fast enough but will really good fun at sensible speeds.

Did you have much interest in it at all?

I've got a very similar spec car to yours and I'm going to be selling up in a month or two. Not sure whether theres a market for a higher priced (Well spec'd) car as there are quite a few cheaper ones around now.

We sailed past 100K miles the other week, still tight as a drum and I was beginning to wonder when anything might present itself. Well, this week the dash pinged up a warning symbol I hadn't ever seen before, I guessed it was likely to be a water pump issue as it is on its original part. Sure enough after recovering it to the local Indy this was confirmed. £600 later she's back on the road. I guess I can't complain too much really, it had to fail at some point and is unlikely to ever need any attention again. It does beg the question though, what is actually wrong with a belt driven pump in the first place....£400 for a pump!?

Company car is ordered so it won't be long now before I will have to do something. The problem is, every time I drive it after anything else I genuinely still love it.

Ooof!! £600 notes...

Mate, should have posted up. These chaps doing a cracking job of not only repairing but replacing the design flaw in the original part (which BMW still have in their replacement part). And for a lot less £600..... £195 paperbag

My local BMW specialist now uses them after I pointed this out!

I guess, end of the day I needed the car back quickly so sod it. This one lasted all this time so all good. I can't see a water pump on that site?

Exact same thing happened to me a few days ago. Got the amber coolant symbol, carried on as I couldn't stop, coolant light went red and it went into limp mode, drove it like that for 10mins just to get it to work where I could leave it. Turned it off when I parked up, heard the fans running and after 30mins I opened the coolant tank and there was no water!

Filled it up and drove to a garage where they did the water pump and thermostat. I asked whether I had risked damaging it with the red coolant light on and they said no as this engine is pretty bullet proof, having one customer drive his about 40 miles in the same condition with no further damage other than the pump.

Mine has done 125000 miles now. In my ownership I've done the starter motor, alternator and now water pump. Clutch will be the next thing to go I reckon. Wife has given me strict instructions not to break it again or it goes! Lol

They're tough little cars really, I'm still genuinely into it as a 'thing' and this is someone who gets really bored very quickly with cars in general. It's due a full detail soon and maybe get the wheels refurbished.

Have you given up trying to sell this now? The more I look the more I like it and I'm looking for something at that money

What? rolleyes

The electric water pump on my Z4C (same N52 3 litre engine as the 130i) died in 2015 at 60K miles and 9 years old - replacement pump and thermostat cost me £800 at my local BMW indy! eek

ETA just looked at the link - that is for an ABS pump FFS, not a water pump! banghead

If only someone could find a fix for the water pump!

So I have started to have some calls on the car, thought i'd get around to an update and a clean up!

The wash wipe decided to pack up the other month, it was getting annoying. A bit of research revealed that it was the pump so off to eBay. New pump sourced for about £6 and an hour or so fitting. I was quite impressed with the water bottle and how tightly packaged it all is in there.

After a clean I still look at the car and think it's a very cool thing. It continues to amuse every day and feels as tight as the brand new 320d which I have been given. It also makes a much, much nicer noise and handles properly. I am going to miss everything about the car when it goes to be honest and I am mulling over the idea of long term storage as it's just a ridiculous amount of fun and cost nothing to keep. Given the low numbers of them maybe in a few years they will creep up. This one owes me a lot of money so it will likely be a poor investment but on the flip side it's one of those cars that when the right buyer drives it, it will be gone. Otherwise we strip all the cool parts away. But it would bug me.

So.

Decisions.

Hi Yonex,

I've been following this thread for a while - I have a E91 330i with the N52 engine, manual box and Birds B3 suspension kit. It would be a shame if you do have to let it go, as like you say they’re special cars (based on the similar underpinnings and same engine) once tweaked – and it’s quite a bit of time and money to ever be able to get something like it again – if you can find a good base car to begin with which is increasingly more difficult.

That said, I don’t yet have the LSD or ARBs on mine, so I might know somewhere that the trick bits could live if you do decide to sell those bits on.
