hope it's good! if it is it's a good buy for £800

i bought a 2 year old 328ci se in 2001 for £20,250,
I thought "the king was my cousin"
kept it 9 years, the longest i've ever kept a car
was gutted to let it go for £3,500
happy memories!

if its only fault is one wing bubbling which you have a spare of anyway then id say you got yourself a bargain at that price. good to hear about a factory head unit with a aux slot as was thinking of getting a aftermarket one myself for the same reason as the OP

Oh, and if it clunks a little at the back when you lift the clutch sharply don't worry too much about it - they really all do that according to the garages I have mentioned it to about mine! hehe

Most on the M3 forums say the same thing! They don't - it's slop in the engine, gearbox, propshaft, and rear subframe bushes.

I figured there would be an explanation somewhere, my 328i has done it since I bought it (3 years ago) and never been mentioned on inspections / MOTs etc. The specialist I took it to said not to worry about it.

Rear subframe bushes are getting done in the new year so it will be interesting to see how much difference it makes. Mine only does it when you lift the clutch sharply, never does it when driving smoothly. Did you manage to fix it on your M3?

Are you getting OEM bushes? My current M3 has never done it and has the CDV removed i.e. sharper clutch response. The two E46's I've had that did were:

2002 M3 manual - 60k miles;
2001 320 Ci manual - 66k miles.

The rest were under 30k miles and never did it.

Bought a radio in the end while stateside. Its a kenwood, might be able to change to uk frequency, not listed to a radio since I got my last radio from the states, without uk frequency, so not a big problem haha.

Quite subtle not huge flashy thing. Comes with a rear usb port, would really like to run it into the center console somewhere, how hard is that to do on the e46's?

Assuming its a non CD unit, Halfords are doing this for £40 if you cant get the frequencies sorted.

So just done about 100 miles in the 2 days I've been back.

There is defiantly a clunk at the back when setting off and 1st to 2nd changes.
Steering wheel wobble at 70mph when braking.
3 warning lights pop up at 80mph, traction control, handbrake and something else. They all disappear when car is turned off though, don't return till 80mph, faulty speed sensor or something I reckon.

Nice bargain that, won't take much tidying either. Get signed up on e46 zone, great bunch of guys there, most of the questions or problems you may have will already be on there. I have a 330ci sport (auto) and very very very occasionally I get a clunk from low speed under hard/sharp use of the throttle. I've always thought it was normal, an E90 I had (less than 15k on the clock) did it too. Could be a worn donut on your propshaft though.

First check the diff mounts for play, then the propshaft guibo.

It's not hard to do OP, but a word of warning, that what I did on mine, the trouble is when you drive slightly fast you ipod will slip out of the side and be on view, then some low life scum will start it, like mine.
If I get another ipod I would route the cable to that small drawer cubby hole in between the steering column and door.

Living in the highlands of Scotland, I don't need to worry about scum, people regularly leave houses and cars unlocked.

I also have the clunk, generally when manoeuvring at slow speeds. E46 M3 with 50k miles. Should I follow the same check list to try and trace the problem?

RE Radio fitting:
Pop off the dash trim strips (LH one first), then remove the center vents for access.
Remove the glovebox (4 screws).
You can now get above and behind where the head unit is to be fitted and the job is easy. Rear usb can be into the glovebox for no effort, or from there you can get down to the center console. Perhaps pop the sunglasses holder out, then pop the climate controls as well. The sunglasses holder could be drilled to take the USB and its pretty stealth / safe from spirited driving.

So since I got back I've put 830 miles onto it. Hasn't developed any new faults.
It's been surprisingly good on fuel. Life's easy with cruise control tongue out
Mot is due 25th jan so let's hope for a easy pass smile

Glad it's running well, you will find the cruise very useful in the A9 with all the average speed cameras!

Will keep an eye out for yours, mine is a red saloon smile
