Nice car OP - I always forget about these. I had an EK9 and enjoyed the on/off nature of VTEC back then so can see the appeal.

Thanks for the comments everyone...

As standard it's very noticeable how sedate progress is until VTEC. Only musters maybe 135lbs/ft of twist pre-vtec (~5800). Certainly not enough for the kerbweight- thus you have to be in the mood to keep it on the boil. Great fun, rewarding but hard work.

Adding my K&N typhoon hasn't helped at all- though it's stronger up top & sounds as good as any VTEC I've heard!

Down pipe, Decat & backboxes will certainly improve matters

A few little changes of late with the car

I have fitted dark smoked foglight covers, removed the wing 'VTEC' badges & renewed the faded bootlid 'type r' emblem.

Looks a bit more stealthy & modern now.

Remus boxes & new stoppers to follow- thinking of going red with the front Calipers too....

I have fond memories as a teenager traveling with my dad in his GTO TT having a little challenge with one of these on the A350 near Warminster. Went on for about 5 miles until the "follow me" lightboard appeared in the rear window!! The look on my dad's face was priceless.

The sound is quite something isn't it biggrin

Yours looks fantastic in red.

I've had mine just over 2 years now and it's pushing 138,000 miles. With regular servicing and new bushes recently it still feels fresh as a daisy.

Funnily enough I also got mine having previously owned a DC2 for 30,000 miles!

Certainly does!! Thanks- the red really comes up a treat with a polish.

My DC2 sadly was more milano pink, but the Accord has resisted the fade well

Nice, I keep looking in the classifieds to go back to a type r but not sure it will ever happen. I had a red one , only the spoiler seemed to suffer really. I did 300 miles a weeks so really got to drive the thing down a large country road route. Good times - not counting the 60 quid a week petrol consumption.

My DC2 was champ white thankfully, but I've had my fair share of battles with red cars including a 1989 E30 and the 1988 Starion alongside my DC2 below.

The key was always regular polishing but the frustrating thing was that the kind of weather that shows off a nice red at it's best (good sunshine) is exactly the kind of weather that leads to the car needing polishing again! rotate

That was one of the reasons I was keen to find an Accord in Black (I'm not a huge fan of the silver). But the black does then have the issue of showing up every spec of dust... In a perfect world where money was no object I'd get mine sprayed champ white!

Very nice!

Have now added a set of 'proper' discs/pads to the to do list along with a pair of rear tyres & valve clearances....

The standard brakes didn't inspire confidence & my Hawk Pads/OEM disc combo is life-ex

I do love an ATR but they sound like bloody hard work biggrin

How was it going from a DC2 to an ATR?

Got an interview for a job 15 minutes away next week, if I get the job then I could finally justify one of these!

No pictures of those amazing seats?
If you do I know of a very well maintained and lightly modified pre facelift black one that will be for sale within a couple of weeks...feel free to PM me.

I can't speak for the OP but to me the ATR just feels like a bigger DC2 with more torque. Yes torque is still in very short supply, but to me it is enough of a step up that it rarely feels a chore to drive in day-to-day use like the DC2 sometimes did (it is my daily car, as was the Integra).

The Integra is still (just) ahead in terms of raw fun, the seating position is lower (mine was running an even lower seat rail) and the engine revs higher than the ATR. This combined with the small size of the car made it feel just that little bit more exciting.

The ATR however has a better interior (I also sought out one with the optional arm-rest for daily duties), and is certainly a better place to be when on the work commute etc. I like the fact the air-con can run without any noticeable effect on the performance, unlike the DC2 where it felt like the engine was being dragged to a standstill...

Those issues are kind of missing the point of these cars though. The steering feel in the ATR is every bit as good as the DC2 (some people even rate it higher), the Recaro seats are incredible, the seating position itself is very low for a saloon car, and the whole car feels like more of a hot hatch than a 4-door saloon- it is also worth remembering the ATR only weighs around 70Kg more than an S2000...

Then there is the noise. My car as the common K&N Typhoon fitted, coupled with a full Mongoose exhaust system. The sound this produces from anything over 3,000rpm is just incredible- it effectively sold me the car about a minute before I had even seen it! hehe

I thought my DC2 sounded good with an ACR intake, Mugen manifold, Kakimoto mid section, and 5zigen back box, but the ATR is just on a whole different level of noise awesomeness. The downside of course is that it is not ideal on motorway journeys but then I only do a couple of those a year so it's no biggie for me.

The last thing is a point on practicality- aside from the 4 doors on the ATR, the Integra was far more practical in terms of load carrying. The ATR has a rear bulkhead meaning the rear seats don't fold. This means stuff has to either fit on the back seats, or in the (admittedly very big) boot. This pretty much precludes the carrying of longer items or bulky items- all stuff the DC2 could handle with ease due to the hatch and folding rear seats.

As an example me & my mate were laying some decking in our garden- we were in in Homebase car park loading the 2.4 meter planks into our two cars. We fitted 34 of them into his Clio 182, my ATR managed just 7... Likewise we got a dishwasher into my DC2, no chance with the ATR. I do a fair bit of mobile DJ work and all of the stuff like 2-meter trussing sections has to go into my mate's Focus whilst my ATR takes all the small stuff.

But in terms of driving fun I don't think there is much to choose between the two. Both of them are hugely entertaining.

Reading this thread has made me look for a nice one of these cars, they seem right up my street.

I've found a nice low mileage one for admittedly top price but still comparatively low compared to other cars.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2001-HONDA-ACCORD-TYPE-R...

Although reading about bulkhead rust has put me off slightly, is there any way I can check for signs of this on someone elses car? Can't really expect to go about removing arch liners etc can I?

Someone help sway me please as I'm planning to go and buy the above car tomorrow!

Make sure you can get underneath it somehow and check near the front subframe. There's two bungs just behind it where it can also start to rust.

Awesome cars and I'd seriously consider owning another if the seats folded flat.

ETA: drop links are a fking PITA to replace on these too

4000 is serious money !. But it does look really nice to be fair. Maybe 3500 at a push. Corrosion wise, it is really difficult to see without taking it off , you could peel back the carpet inside , but again pretty intrusive. Problem is if it's thre , its a massive issue and can cost plenty of pennies to put right properly.

It is a lot but its had recent cambelt, brakes all round and 4 new bridgestonr re050s. So that's a grand I'd probably spend on a nice tidy 2.5k one so I think k 3.5k would be fair given age condition mileage and history. I think I will ask if I can jack it up and get a good look round the jacking points, subframe etc
