So much for getting most of the chassis done by Xmas! But at least I've finally made a start....

It took a while for the advice to sink in but I decided not to go ahead with relocating the radius arms, way too much effort for little gain....and a lot of clearance issues!
I've got some E type panels on order, sills and rear quarter panels so will be starting on the sheet metal work when they arrive, I was going to get a boot floor as well...til I saw the price...so will make my own...it would have needed modifying anyway since planning to tuck the silencers up high....so they can't be seen from the side. Also hoping to be able to use the XJS tank over the axle but there are going to be issues there as well....I got hold of an electric roof from an MX5...and it looks like that will want to be in the same space!!

Did a bit more today....outriggers to support the boot floor and the silencers but mainly waiting for panels to come from Martin Robey so I can get on with the main part....

No pics this time I'm afraid...broke my camera at the weekend, but some progress though.
Have been thinking about some of the things that will give me problems further on such as window sealing, door hinging/locking/latching, wipers etc and slightly changed plans....I'm happy enough designing and building chassis/suspension but the hard part for me is getting all that fiddly stuff to work!
So have just acquired a cat C write off, 2011 MX5 which will be donating its bulkhead, windscreen, wiper/washers, demist, electric hardtop, doors and A and B posts....all to be incorporated into my chassis.
The doors will need a bit of alteration to get the E type look I'm after but the bonus of having a pretty much off the shelf interior is too much of a temptation....it'll be re trimmed in a more appropriate way though.....
Have quite a few reservations about just how a Mazda screen and hardtop is going to look plonked on top of what will essentially be an E type body but I'm just going to suck it and see! Actually, the hardtop itself isn't that dissimilar to a series1/2 hardtop.....can't really say the same for the screen though!!!!

A question I forgot to ask....have just ordered a bellhousing kit from Dellow in Australia....does anyone know what the rate of import duty is? Wondering how much extra cash I'm going to need to find?

Rule of thumb would be purchase price + 25%, and hope like hell that it skates through with nothing.

Car parts normally end up as 6%

so

Item cost and shipping
Plus 6% applied to both
Then Vat at 20% gets added to all of the previous
Plus the usual delivery agents fee for collecting on behalf of HMRC

Best thing to do is speak to HMRC and establish what the duty rate is - I found them very helpful last time I imported a load of stuff from Oz. once you get the duty code you can get it put on the shipping documents - that way the UK delivery agent doesn't get to guess what it should be (collecting on behalf of HMRC they err on the side of caution)

Thanks for that....sounds better than 25% anyway! Have tried contacting them but theres only a message saying they are closed from beginning Dec to end of Jan and only way to get info is by email....which they haven't replied to!!

It has got the potential to be way more than 25%

Say item is £100 & Shipping £25

So that's £125 plus 6% import charge = £132.50 total

And that total gets VAT applied at full 20%

So £159 now after VAT

Plus the shippers admin fee say £10

£169 landed to you door so closer to 35% Duty and charges

Yes, I meant 25% import duty then Vat on top, not the total cost. Thanks for the advice though because I didn't realise there were different rates, have now got the duty code and passed it on to Dellow, the parts cost £750 and shipping and duty etc bring it up to nearly £1100!!

I did a group buy for 50 car club members (some poly bushes) from Oz so as I was trying to help everyone understand what the delivered cost would be it was critical that the duty was known up front - I found the HMRC really helpful in guidance right thro the process - right down to advising me to get the seller to put the duty classification on the shipping documents so there would be no guessing by the UK delivery agent as I said earlier

What I did find was that the duty varies a lot - for instance from memory if they were declared as rubber parts (I know poly isn't rubber) the duty went up I asked a lot of different questions all based around what they were and how they could be described before settling on the one that was best fit (duty wise too)

Ok, camera is working again (put batteries in the wrong way) so here is a pic of progress....

The outer sill is in about the right position and will have a tube structure running along inside it eventually but my MX5 shell hasn't arrived yet and I need exact dimensions before I go any further. I'm using the Mazda B posts which incorporate the hardtop pivots so trying to leave as much clearance as I can for the hardtop to swing down into....wouldn't want to be driving about semi erect!

nonsense

This needs more updates... and you should definitely get the BRG paint ordered! This looks like it might just win pistonheads when it's done!

Thanks! Heres some updates, tbh I've been posting more on another forum (RodsnSods) because I've been discussing the design with a couple of people on there.
Lower rails of chassis....

Mazda stripped down....

Try out of new bonnet...

And engine in place....

Brilliant, i never realized how similar in width the MX5 is the E-type!
