Great car smile

Just bought myself a 1999 variant in Avus Blue with the same heritage black leather and walnut. Mine needs a tad more tlc, but as a daily driver doing 20k a year, it'll be an ongoing project.

Enjoy smile

Great looking car! I've just got rid of my E39 (albeit a lowly 525i Sport)
Once the funds allow in a few years, an E39 M5 is definitely on the cards - out of curiosity though, how does it compare to your 540i?

The "walnut" trim is easily changed (mostly pops off) and you can buy complete "aluminium" or piano black trims for a few hundred quid. Bit of a leather treatment and you have what will feel like a new interior for under £300.

Nice car you have there.

But why would I replace my wonderful walnut interior for some dull silver or black plastic? I love my walnut trim, it was my first choice trim! Works very well with the heritage leather too.

Because it looks erm, horrific? laugh

If you like it then that's all that matters.

I may be 22 by age, but mentally I seem to be somewhere in my 60s with my tastes sometimes :P

Quality purchase and some great research to take the unknowns off the table. Good work.

It is pretty vile, but each to their own and all that. It's still an epic car.

That's an epic car for 22.

I changed the trim from black to walnut in my 328i.

The black was just dull and walnut gave it more character.

Keep the wood imo!

Stunner. Congrats! I've been seriously tempted by one (or an E46 M3) but some of the reported running costs scare me - will be watching your thread with interest. smile

Edit to add - I like the wood trim too. wink

Don't let the costs put you off, i had mine for 3 years and 22000 miles. Apart from fuel (admittedly lots...but averaged in the low 20's overall), 2 sets of rear tyres, servicing from an indy and all the usual insurance, road tax, etc it didn't cost me a penny!

It really was a great car that i should never have sold really...especially looking at the price of them now!

There is an E90 M3 (i.e. 4 door), not sure about the E36.

Dropped the car off at my legend of a mechanic this evening with a list of issues that need sorting, brake judder, suspected broken thermostat, the fan that stays on while the car is warm and sounds like a jet engine, some slightly wandery front end handling characteristics and a new intermittant issue where it appears the battery is flat and it won't start but after 5 or so attempts it will burst into life fine. I spoke to him briefly in the week about exhausts, and silencer delete versus other systems as something I want to look at when these teething issues are sorted. When I dropped it off today, he just said "right I'll work through the list and get all these issues sorted for as little money as possible and leave you more money to make it as loud as possible". I actually love that man! Fingers crossed he can get to the bottom of these issues cheaply. I've left it with him for the next week or two so he can look it and around more important stuff, besides I've still got the 540i to bumble about it. Missing the M5 already! Will update you when it's back and I've got a substantial bill for the work needed.

Crank position sensor? Not too sure on that one but if it was the battery being too weak, you would hear a change in the note of the fuel pump priming on the ignition, and it won't even attempt to turn the engine over, just a loud clunk as the starter engages, all the dash lights go out then come back. If you haven't been there already the m5board.com forum is a mine of useful information. Good luck getting it sorted.
